Sufism no doubt is a peaceful and tolerant movement, once I was also hugely inspired by it but the thing is being peaceful doesn't credits anyone being right. I do respect them but the problem is Sufism is actually a lot to do with emotions, enthusiasm and mysticism rather than rationality. Through out my experience I found this movement is filled with innovations and idolatry, even though Salafis, Deobands and other devout groups are claimed extremist but their beliefs are built with proofs and reasoning while Sufism is an evoluted practice that has empty theology. I think this is why it has lost its popularity because when it comes for seeking truth you don't choose any notion for fun but logic.

Consider looking into this again. The greatest scholars and Imams of our Religion were ardent follows of Tassawuf. Granted, false-claimants and pseudo-practitioners have maligned the name of Tassawuf, but in reality their portrayals couldn’t be further from the truth. Real, authentic Tassawuf or Sufi Shaykhs have always remained free from repugnant innovation. Finally, I’d like to say that Tassawuf is not about whirling like dervishes or walking on water - Nay. As our great Sufi Mashaykh have said (and they were also mostly Scholars of Islam, too), Tassawuf is to remain steadfast upon God’s Sacred Law. The sooner we understand this, the sooner we’re likely to understand what Tassawuf or Sufism is.

Sufism is a practice of acquiring a higher form of knowledge , the one which couldn't be contained in books (or expressed in words) . And was thus transfered as legacy from one generation to the other. Starting from Prophet (S.A.W.W) to Sahabas (R.A). Commonly known as "Ilm - al - Laduni ". And you can find PROOFs of its existence directly from the Qura'n. And through numerous Ahadees.
