The version on the Live from Red Rocks album is also fantastic.

Hadn’t listened to this one for years.. great going down memory lane while you hear it for the first time. Also excited for you to hear 40, next! A song that became one of their all time signature live tracks

This song is like the bridge between the War and Unforgettable Fire albums

I was 13 when the Joshua tree came out. I had never heard of the band or any of their music. I thought the album cover was cool so I bought it. It's impact on me was immeasurable. I immediately got their 4 previous albums, an ep and a live album. It's all I listened to for years. From 1980-1993 and for a brief period in the early 2000's U2 were unstoppable. It's not cool to like them anymore and some of the criticism is fair but the music they made transcends all that. Surrender is also my favorite track of this album. You seem to enjoy Brian Eno. I really hope you review the unforgettable fire next.

I do smile every time you say how surprised you are to hear U2 doing post punk. That's what they were before they were anything else. And "Boy" is waiting for you to illustrate this. I do love this track, though, always have (although nothing on this album touches "Drowning Man" for me) . It's just a shame that it's a bit forgotten now. For anyone else it's a career highlight, for U2 it's a footnote. But it is telling that Bono called his autobiography "Surrender".

If you’re loving the atmospherics created here you need to listen to their follow up album called The Unforgettable Fire. Not a rock album like War but more experimental. The Edge really shines here, very talented guy! Also one of my favourite deep cut tracks of theirs.

This is my favourite U2 album. They lost me after Joshua tree but I guess that shows my age. I think Drowning man is an amazing song. Rick Biatto agrees. If you don’t know who he is, check him out. A font of knowledge.
