To be entirely fair, Taihou should be more afraid of bad damage control, since a single torpedo shouldn't have sunk the ship. To make a long story short, inexperienced damage control crews accidentally vented avgas fumes through the entire ship rather than outside, which found a spark from somewhere (likely the engine or boiler rooms) and caused the massive explosion that sank her. Many Japanese carriers did have a design flaw (among many, many others) regarding the placement of avgas tanks in places where they could be hit by torpedoes (see Shoukaku for another example).

Hold on, you're telling me that they effectively sank their own ship due to gross incompetence?! wtf? I had heard that JP navy members were excessively over-trained & strict adherents to protocol.

@@Archedgar In most cases that was true, not for damage control. The USN trained all crew extensively in DC in basic training (and still does), whereas in the IJN that was a specialty that only a few specialized people were trained in. Taihou, along with other mid- and late-war ships, was rushed into service, with little opportunity for crew to familiarize themselves with the ship. Thus the DC crews aboard weren't familiar enough with the ship to effectively vent the fumes. Also, in some other cases (Akagi comes to mind), when damage control stations were hit, all trained DC personnel went up with them.

Uh. Hurricane Bruh, I know this is a Late Comment but Uh... USS Albacore isn't a Balao Class but a Gato Class Submarine along with Dace, Bluegill, Cavalla and Flasher (New Sub from Light Chasing sea of stars Event). Archerfish on the other hand is a Balao Class Sub. Check the Wikipedia if you want truth.
