Alhamdollilah, I moved out of Pakistan 18 years ago. Situation in Pakistan was not that bad at that time and many people asked me not to leave Pakistan. I am glad that I didn't listen to them at that time. My kids were very young when they arrived here. Now they don't want to go back and love this beautiful country. I predict this situation back in 2009. When I was doing bank job after my bba in 2007. Toxic work culture no safety in roads. Political strikes load shedding and other issues. I decided to move and came to Australia in 2010 for Masters in Accounting and now Allhumdullia now I am citizen and doing very decent job here. Nothing is change yet as my predictions were absolutely right .

This is a great interview, very informative. The guest shared some heartfelt comments on his personal decisions and his thoughts on the broader landscape. I wish him all the best in his journey. The reality is he is a classic first generation immigration story. Ties to the motherland, hopes of returning one day, missing friends & family, nostalgia for the sights and sounds etc, this is to be expected. But with my experience of a second generation Pakistani, with (now third generation) teenage children, people should realise they are gone for good. There is no coming back. There is no place in Pakistan for people like us and the country & it's elite has nothing to offer us. My humble experience to those emigrating would be to understand this is a "forever" decision. It will be hard for you, but your future generations will thank you for it. The problems in Pakistan need to be owned and addressed by the people living there. The emotional guilt and entitlement they deploy on first generation Pakistanis really sickens me. It stops them from mentally moving on and create a rift with their children.

I was a student of his at MAJU from 2011 to 2013, where I studied economics, and whatever he mentioned, I have been experiencing during my banking tenure of 10 years, like he said, I have experienced the same thing, which he mentioned last point where he was complacent, I have experienced the same reaction from the society, although during those time, many individuals were supportive to me, but the societal reactions he was mentioning, I clearly experienced the same, Sir.

Can feel the pain but grass is not greener on the other side as well (or at least that greener what we think from Pakistan). I would suggest to do the program or at least a research on how many people succeeded in their professions when they left the country. How are they surviving in their social and economical lives and how much debt each person is carrying to live a reasonable life. It is nothing to challenge but there are harsh facts waiting on the other side of the world as well. Lost of identity for generations to come is one of the biggest issues as well. Following religion as it is supposed be is everyday challenge etc. Good job Raftar, you guys are doing excellent job!

First time listening to your podcast and glad to catch up with this conversation. I too never wanted to settle abroad permanently but when I tried to move back to an rather digitally proactive academic organization that claims to be what not, as a professor, I was literally shocked at the work culture in higher education, breach of research ethics and like so much of unnecessary corruption and the fact that people are so ok with it. I just had to pack my bags and run. All that is just not what I can deal with anymore. So even when I say to my colleagues (in same shoes as mine) sometimes پتھر اپنی اصل جگہ بھاری ہوتا ہے, irrespective of how much recognition you get abroad, the lifestyle, there is always a sense of belonging and ‘to matter’ that lingers … I too dream of returning to Pakistan in a genuine and authentic setting… a dream that’s getting faded with time though

The correct word is actually "disheartened". "Disheartened" is an adjective that means feeling discouraged, disappointed, or dispirited. Example: "I was disheartened by the news that my favorite restaurant had closed down." "Dishart" is not a valid word in the English language, and "disharted" is a common misspelling of "disheartened".

🎗90% of the skilled and educated peoples with little resources are not willing to live here in this suffocated environment and are flying abroad with great pace . this is very alarming situation for the future of this poor country...

There is a horrible situation in Pakistan for the teachers especially those who are working with private sector universities.

I am living in the city the one you are talking about since 27 years. Things aren't as great as you have described. You are one of those who might be highly paid and living in secure accommodation provided by your employer. Just try to go into sighthill area just a mile away trust me you will say Pakistan is safe. There are many areas where you can't even go during the bright day light. Medical facilities has a waiting list over a year. Train tickets are one of the most expensive in the world because you pay insurance in your ticket that's why they compensate you. Majority of the parents specially the one have daughters don't want them to grow up.

worst mentality is when they say one day ill come back, youre out stay out setup your new world there. If you have this mentality of going back you never settle in a place properly.

When you get a chance to travel abroad on a work visa, you will fly as soon as possible and never consider the second thought. Therefore, do not blame others for the desire for his family's welfare and wants to save from the hell of Pakistan.

@@ZainAli-y9j7i I don’t think you understood my point what I mean is once you move out of Pakistan then stay out and don’t think about moving back. This leaves you hanging and you don’t make the right decisions in life because you always have this ‘I’ll go back’ one day mentality. I know many people that built homes in Pakistan living in USA and Canada thinking they will go back live there and that’s definitely not happening in most cases. Built your home where you live.

Why to eulogize. Its a small world in today's era. People do go for work and for better living. You are an international teacher and your kids international student.Come and go Pakistan and sent remittance. Hope insha'Allah our country will again be called the land of doctors and engineers. Good luck

I left Pakistan on 2nd Feb 1972. Things were bad for middle class back then. No job after doing Bsc . No money to bribe or any big time connections. Never been a victim of street crime up till now here. You took street crime as it happens everywhere. Karachi was safe at 2 in the morning. Since then these criminals on the top have destroyed the country. You people have no idea. When we go on vacation we let the police know that we will be gone for 4 weeks. They do extra patrolling around the house. You can’t even think about this in Pakistan. I don’t see bright future for you guys. Last 4 years has been the worst. I agree one institution is too powerful.
