I really hate that online movie discussion has turned into discussions about tracking and Box Office numbers rather than story and quality.

A bird was singing in a tree. A man hears the tune and walks out of his house and over to the tree. He looks up at the bird and yells “Shut up Bird! You can’t even sing and I’m trying to sleep. You have ruined my day!” Later another man hears the bird singing and he comes out and says “Thank you Bird! Your song has cheered me up and given me a reason to smile. You have made my day!” But the bird doesn’t care to listen to how either of them feel about him. He is just doing what a bird does. They sing.

I do not agree with all of your reviews/takes; however, the reason I have been subscribed to you for about 4-5 years is that you are honest and a guy just doing what he loves. It is really unfortunate because I feel like discussing movies has devolved into talking politics. Keep doing what you are doing, Adam! Even with someone under 1K subs, I have gotten some "interesting" comments from people disagreeing with me (Not as bad as you, but still not good), it sucks, but the best is to keep going on and keep doing your thing! Adam, don't worry about the haters. People like what they like, and dislike what they don't. You stuck to your guns with a review of Godzilla Minus One. I was surprised but could see where you were coming from. I liked the movie a lot, if people are harassing you, especially during the holidays and such, don't worry about it. It'll all be over soon. I'm still subscribed as one of your viewers. In fact, I loved the review of your Alien franchise and wholeheartedly agreed with your opinions on it. If people don't like it? Tough. Let them bicker over it. 73 thousand subscribers?! That's a lot. You've done a tremendous job. Keep at it, keep going, wish you all the best!

Earlier in school today we actually got to talk about Star Wars and Indiana Jones in class since our teacher brought it up. It was really nice as there was no yelling or name calling, it was just a group of people talking about movies. Not everyone agreed about which movies were the best or worst (some of my classmates hadn’t seen every movie either) but it was a good, civil conversation talking about movies which is pretty hard to find on the internet sometimes.

People are enthusiastic about Godzilla Minus 1 because it was able to tell a competent story on a $20 million budget. The film was more historically accurate than Ridley Scott’s $200 million “historical epic” Napoleon. The main characters are more heroic than Lucasfilm’s $350 million “heroic adventure” Indiana Jones 5. The action is more tense and believable than Marvel’s $400 million “action adventure” Antman 3. Oh…and it got Americans to watch a foreign language film on IMAX. That’s the grading curve used by the fans who are upset by one review which stopped a film from achieving a rare 100% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes which would send a message to the major American studios. Hope this helps clarify things for you, Adam:-)

Sorry, Adam. You've triggered a wall of text. Pandora's box opened years ago and it ain't closing. Twitter more than anything destroyed online discourse when it normalized quick, snappy takes instead of fleshed out thoughts, and prioritized newness over substance. It created an environment dictated by virality and reactions where everyone wanted to be the first to say something in a way that brings attention. No concern for originality, accuracy, or consequence. Just get those one-liners out for likes. The more inflammatory or entertaining, the better. That culture of just reacting to things in the most binary, self-important, surface level way possible spread to other platforms. Then algorithms made everything worse by elevating content that appeals to our crappiest impulses and spoon feeding it to us. Hashtags and trends suddenly defined people's values and identities, and recommendations brought like-minded folks together in ways that allowed even the most fringe, destructive opinions to find an audience big enough to validate them and become a mob. If humans were better as a whole, it wouldn't have spiraled out of control the way it has, but we're not. Intelligent, reasonable people capable of checking their own bias are the minority. People whose basic decency doesn't disappear just because they have the anonymity of the internet as a shield are the minority. People who care more about being right than about being seen or causing drama are the minority. People with critical thinking skills and basic reading comprehension aren't the minority yet, but folks who don't have those are definitely the loudest. Now we're in a world where you can say carrots are gross and it turns into an argument with a concerted effort to cancel you at best or threaten you and your loved ones at worst. Let alone having an opinion on something valued more than a vegetable, like movies lol Tldr; the internet is full of precious weirdos and stalkers who need therapy they'll never get. Trust me when I say your time online will greatly improve once you get over this need to respond to them all the time. They don't care what you have to say. I get wanting to defend yourself because you know your own mind and motivations better than some rando who came across something you said or did once and lost their mind over it. I get it because I used to be that person who felt like I had to explain what I meant or who I am to a bunch of strangers. Then I realized I don't. Caring what someone who doesn't know me thinks about me is like caring what someone thinks of a film they never watched. I'm happy as a lark online since I let go of that. Someone accuses me of being a racist white dude over something dumb like which character I play in a game for example? I could point out that I'm a black woman and waste time giving examples of all the characters I pick that look like me. Or I can ignore them and move on with my life lol Contrary to popular belief, that's not "letting them win." That's giving them exactly as much attention as they deserve, which is none. Learn to give none, Adam. Your blood pressure will thank you for it in the long run.

The problem is a lot of people have assumed their film taste as part of their identity. You saw this with comic books back in the day and it’s come back with their films adaptations. There are a lot of losers or failures with no meaning in their life, so they must grab for something. That something is their tastes. On top of that, the internet has really ramped up the inherent tribalism we all must deal with. When you say this movie sucks, they hear it as you think they suck. Don’t get me wrong, it’s *their* responsibility to stop acting like an idiot, but that’s where I think it’s all come from

@@Edd_LShoreactually he's right, that's what most ppl are looking for. The fact that ppl rely on reviews more these days is why cinema is dying. Most "film fans" these days would rather hear a discussion about a movie than watching it, and that just shows the lack of intelligence with the current generation. They don't have an attention span to watch a movie so they rely on KZbinrs or review scores to make their decisions for them. Which is cool, but then these same fans trash movies that get bad reviews while admitting to not seeing it. It's annoying

@@Edd_LShore not really. Yeah sports fans can be crazy but I never heard of Shannon sharp or Steven A getting harassed and told to die because they have a hot take on a sports team. TV and movie discussion is kind of the same thing. And of course ppl will act crazy over politics, it's understandable. I don't agree with it but it's understandable. It directly affects ppl lives. But ppl bashing someone who didn't like a Godzilla movie when they haven't even seen it? That's idiotic. Why does someone have to confirm that this movie is good? I saw wish and silent night as a double feature at my local drive in and funny thing is that I didn't know what silent night was and just watched it. It felt so fresh not having a preconceived notion about the movie before going in. But we got ppl trashing the marvels who haven't seen it, blindly praising Oppenheimer but haven't seen it. And what makes it cringe is that this isn't movie discussion anymore. Its really politics and they're using the movie as a way to start it. Why compare Godzilla to hollywood releases? For what? Because of Ant-Man 3 wasn't that good? Come on man, that's corny.

@@mania4270 "It felt so fresh not having a preconceived notion about the movie before going in." I faced this back in 2010, when the Ramona and Beezus film w/Joey King and Selena Gomez (the former being Ramona Quimby, the latter her big sister Beezus) was first advertised-- I myself wanted to see it, because I wanted to see how the late, great Beverly Cleary's stories about those children's literary characters would be brought to life in a film (my sister, however, didn't think it would be that good, believing that books are always far better than shows or films made from those books). I didn't see it in a theater, but I saw it on DVD for the first time, and Joey King did so remarkably well in it as Ramona that, IMO, this was foundational in why she is a big star of today at 24 (this has been one of many great pictures she has had in her career in Tinseltown, and one of six that I have of hers on physical media, chronologically from this to Bullet Train).

Really what's causing this problem is the rise of fandoms. Like some other comments have pointed out, for whatever reason people have decided to attach themselves to a certain franchises. And when you criticize that franchise, they take it as an assault on their personality. I don't know if the internet/social media is to blame, or if people have just become so blinded by marketing that they basically become simps for the brands they pledge loyalty to. It's rather sad because all of this prevents reasonable conversations. Like you mentioned in your other video, I don't understand the undying obsession with one specific thing. No one thing, whether it's Lord of the Rings, Mario, Lego, or Taylor Swift needs to occupy that much of your emotions.

Anonymity is not the problem. People say the same things on Facebook or Twitter when they are not anonym. Also there were always savage conflicts over culture, for example in 1800s about theater, opera or even paintings. But the conflicts were smaller. I think the most important difference is the enormous amount of interactions with different opinions on the internet, instead with a few people who have direct contact to you or opinions on newspaper or TV like before the internet. Also our culture encourages ad hominem attacs, even politics, universities and media do that. The whole cancel culture is about ad hominem. Conflict is a marketing tool and a tool to gain attention which many companies, politicians, activists, etc, use, so people are baited into conflicts. The attacs also got more vicious because western societies have lost their common middle ground, so everything and everybody not next to you looks extrem and foreign. We have no common coordinate system to see where everybody realy stands.

You wanted more action and a less serious tone then complain the tone doesn’t feel as serious as it should? I agree with you, but I think this is something you're gonna have to get used to if you want to continue doing this. You shouldn't have to get used to it. No one should. But you do. The Internet is a vicious place. Online bullying is totally fucked up. But, that is a chance that everyone takes now when they put themselves out there like you do. It's shitty. And, I'm sorry this was your experience. I think training yourself to tune out garbage, asshole comments is your best option. Anyway, I think your channel is great, and I look forward to more of your reviews.

I have respected you and your opinion for quite some time Adam and I still do. I work with a bunch of peeps that are between 20 and 30 years old. Somehow they have been programmed to pretend like they are happy but they are actually miserable. I miss the days when I could make a comment without getting in to an argument every fucking time. I am in my mid fifties so I think I know a little bit about the world by now. I am not closed minded... I still want to learn more about this crazy world we live in. I don't have all the answers and I probably never will. All we can do is raise our emotional shields and ignore all the shitters. Just keep on keepin' on Adam! BTW my real name is Adam as well! You cannot want to do a public movie review channel then get mad when some fans do not like your negative review. That comes with the job. There were reviewers back in 1977 that hated Star Wars and thought it was juvenile and now laugh about all the actual real letters, that people signed with return addresses on the envelopes! of people calling them every bad name in the book. Jamie Kennedy famously did a whole movie where he tried to confront reviewers that hated his movies to try to make them feel bad for saying mean things about him. Famously, most reviewers looked him right in the eye and told him he sucked. That is the business. You can disable comments. But most reviewers ignore negative comments. Ebert's website allows comments and fans come after them all the time. You can either be a shill and just love everything or not. Most people that shill do that specifically because they cannot handle the hurt feelings their opinions cause if they do not like something. If you are going to be honest and be authentic in this space, you cannot care if a bunch of fans do not like your review. A lot of fanbases, even in sports, are all about toxic positivity and do not like anyone saying anything bad about what they like. That is not living in reality.

Making a whole live just to show that you are in a moral high ground of sort is quite hypocrite of you. I know that people said that you talked about this issue but this is not new, in fact, since we know how to disagree with each other that's how things always has been. I think the whole state of affairs that is the movie industry has jaded you and that (being jaded) is having an effect on everything you do as a critic. You wasn't so harsh, your reviews weren't as scathing and you weren't so overly sensitive as you have become as of late. You're a pretty good critic because you love movies but you're letting your love for the art that is cinema get the best of you. Your videos of your experience at the theater when you go out to watch a movie is pretty depressing bro and I'm not attacking you right now, I'm just trying to remind you that you started doing this because you love movies and you love the movie experience. Things change bro. You have to accept that. The movie industry is going to change even more; for the worse, I know you know that and you can see its coming. Its like all these grown ass fan boys who don't want things to change in movies: they don't wanna see a new actor play their favorite character so we have to live with an old ass actor (who never liked playing a role anyway) do a halfhearted performance. That kinda reminds me of you. Don't be like that man. Ultimately don't take this shit personally. Get back to doing great reviews. Get back to sharing the love that you feel for movies. Maybe you should focus on only movies that you liked for a while, I know that may be hard but you don't have to review new movies, you could do a list of all the movies that made you wanna be a movie critic because man, when you review a movie that you like, those are your best reviews to me and thats why I'm here. you can't take the online hate to heart man. Theres no other way to say it because it ain't going no where. you just can't focus on that at all! cause its gonna be there. hate is to easy. love is to hard. bitchass people will always take the easy route.

For the Godzilla video you coulda at least did a little research to get a basic understanding of the actual reason godzilla is godzilla. He isnt supposed to be a giant monster that only destroys things. He is the embodiment of an atom bomb. Saying you have no knowledge of Godzilla then just trashing the newest one just doesn’t seem like a good take
