When I took a drama class in college, things like the mic in the shot are called "hiding behavior." So it would be things like staying behind a podium or a desk. Just anything that comes between a viewer and the person presenting.

I used to work in a school and from time to time I’d be asked to do presentations to classes. Every public speaking/instructor class I ever took said to not have anything in your hands and limit movement. I couldn’t do that. I always had my Tervis/Yeti of water in my hand. The first thing it did, like you said, was give me a security blanket. It was comforting to me. The second thing was it allowed me to control my hand movements more. I talk with my hands and if I concentrate on curbing that, I lose my train of thought. The third thing it did was, also like you said, it gave me a natural break. If a student asked a question, I would take a drink while I put my words together. Thanks for the video! Cheers.

interesting thoughts. I've always hated being able to see a mic on camera especially with the wind screen, but I can see your point. My philosophy has always been that even though I'm not good looking, I just am making videos for my own enjoyment and creativity and also for therapy for myself. I try to do my best but ultimately don't care what other people think really. I think when you aren't trying to get subscribers or have any expectations I believe that I am more natural and less self conscious. Good video and great thoughts

Great video and yay for the over 40 crowd! I noticed too that the Mic is being used for anxiety purposes for some others. " I hate to see people holding the Mic" comments annoy me because you don't know what it took for someone to show up! It's brave to say the least and I'm going to always do what's best for me as I'm sure others are lol! To police others is not allowing them to freely exist as who they authentically are.

Thank you Steven for your content! 46 here and was glad to discover your channel yesterday. I'd been sharing more recently on other platforms and been strategizing recently for a KZbin launch of a new channel. So, this is all super helpful. I'm someone who had a late ADHD diagnosis, at 43, after being urged by a good friend to "get checked" , who too had received a diagnosis in their mid 40's - and they themselves are a psychiatrist! Total game changer. Just sayin...keep up the good work, my friend! 👍

Thank you so much for your insights and kind words. The ADHD topic is such an interesting one. I am however very glad that I wasn’t diagnosed as a child because there was so much lacking in the way of support compared to now and it’s more acceptable. I’m more understood. May I ask how you manage your ADHD?
@andrewtaitphd
@andrewtaitphd 3 ай бұрын
@@Steven-Thompson I hear you on the benefit of not being diagnosed earlier! In my case (and like my psychiatrist friend), I excelled scholastically, and university degrees were my shield to hide behind. I even had the first GP doc I saw say, "You can't have ADHD, you have a Ph.D." Wrong! I then had a visit with an actual ADHD specialist doc who recognized my situation, and got me the diagnosis. As for management, I'm a huge proponent of the "natural" approach but see that the world we live in is, in many ways, unnatural. So, I had no trouble seeking the support of conventional medication, but also I've had therapy, and in addition, we moved from an urban city setting to a rural life in the woods since just after I was diagnosed. Difficult to say what's been the most beneficial with so many changes, but I am a firm believer in maintaining a growth mindset - keep challenging oneself. The real game changer has been my morning routine the last 2 years. I've really enjoyed a version of the "power hour" routine made popular by Robin Sharma's boot "The 5AM Club: Own Your Morning. Elevate Your Life." - although recently I haven't been starting it that early, it consists of 20 min each of exercise, meditation and learning something new.

@@Steven-Thompson Thank-you for your kind observation! I think its wonderful that you care enough about your community to ask if anyone has video suggestions or needs assistance! Thats exactly how I am on my channel! Can you possibly elaborate on how authenticity is important to connecting with audiences? I am authentic; however, I have been watching other content creators' videos where the content creator immediately says hi, welcome to my channel & introduces themselves before getting into the content of stated video title. Can you please speak on whether or not young new channels may or may not benefit from all the introductions in the beginning of the video or speak about how we should not introduce ourselves at all? I am getting mixed information from various channels. I want to be authentic. I only have 47 subscribers at the moment, so I am experimenting with different introduction styles. I usually introduce my channel name in the middle of my videos or at the end. I get right to the meat and potatoes of my videos fairly quickly. I am desiring to grow a loyal engaging community. I think I was posting too often. Maybe you have already made a video about staying authentic or spoke on how to begin a KZbin video if a person has a really young channel. Honestly, all of it! I've been sincerely smiling more on camera lately without it being forced and hope that it shows. The reason why is because I genuinely enjoy the raw and unfiltered talking on camera more and more. As far as props go, I've never thought about it. I sometimes have a coffee cup or seltzer just to drink because my throat gets dry... But that was interesting to actually have it as part of the persona. IRL, I'm always drinking coffee! 😅 I really appreciate your content! What you says makes perfect sense to me to just ignore what's popular or conventional.

(audio niche youtuber) There's two variants of mike in shots that you tend to see (in the grow on youtube niche, and others). The first is the type Steven pointed out where they are holding a lavalier mic or some other kind of mic - he's bang on that is basically a comfort blanket for the creator. The second is where you see them with a mic on a stand in front of them, usually quite a large black mic (Shure SM7B). I would say it's the most commonly used mic on really big youtube channels, and the main reason is it's relatively forgiving of background noise and not being used in a treated room / studio.

If I do not like my own face, how can I expect others to even tolerate it? Sometimes I wish I were a vampire so I wouldn't have to see it in the mirror. If I recorded these thoughts, now that would be an ugly video.

So that's why all those girls sit there putting on makeup while they talk. It's distracting, and engaging to the audience, and makes the video creator more relaxed.

I have so much disdain for people holding mics that weren’t meant to be held, but I eventually had to get over it because it’s virtually impossible to find somebody who isn’t doing it. How holding a lav mic in front of your face with two fingers ever caught on as a fad is beyond me it looks so ridiculous.
