Dont know what VW dealers you reffering to saying they cant fix sunroofs...any vehicle manufacturer if the car they sold was sold with OEM items on it that needs to be repaired...they will be able to do it as they are the first and only point of sale after the car leaves the factory(outsourcing of anything else like sunroofs which is usualy done by Webasto on new car sales) so they just get them in to do the repairs. They will not get involved with things that is not factory fitted(or retro fitted by them) and that goes for any OEM dealer not just VW. Guys use these workshops cos it is cheaper(and the want to support the smaller business). Dont discredit the OEM dealers...nothing aftermarket is unique as there is an OEM somewhere with it first.

An OEM dealer will make you pay for the entire unit instead of just repairing it. But OEM dealers do not do the work themselves as you stated, which means they outsource it to accredited installers such as panelbeaters etc. Dealers don't even service your sunroof when it goes back for service. Their technicians are not trained to do it so they are not fixing it themselves. I'm not specifically referring to aftermarket fitments. I'm referring to new cars as well.
