Holy crap, this video blew up way more than I thought it would. Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by my channel and checking out the video. Tenet certainly isn't a perfect film, it makes some mistakes and the way its written and edited can seem complicated and overwhelming. But unfortunately I think we've conditioned ourselves to expect to be able to understand something completely on the first viewing, or even the second. This goes for any film, and filmmakers like Nolan put an extraordinary amount of time into detailing each shot and line. If you didn't like it, awesome, if you did, that's awesome too. But what point I think I'm trying to make here is that Tenet to me at least is a reflection of the potential of cinema and the creative outlet it's meant to be, not a popcorn flick you forget two days later. It's okay to think, it's what film was made for. Anyways, love you all. See you next week :)

Reminded me of a scene from the first episode of Studio 60 but is a theme through his works "art is getting its ass kicked" is so much more true today than it was back then, those ratings you highlighted in this video are a fine example of that.

That's what Film Master Adam and Robert Storms said in their review. I would love for someone to respond to their video, but not only are a lot of the things they said subjective, so they can't really be debunked or argued against in a manner that doesn't just fall back to saying "well in my opinion it was this", but that would also give them both attention. And I am so happy that not nearly as many people are caring about Robert Storms anymore. Look at his comment sections, they are so empty now. So many probably unsubscribed after his Parasite video.

This film is specifically designed to be watched twice to understand it. When you watch it first, you're watching it from the perspective of John, the protagonist. You're confused about the whole plot like he is and can only work out half the story, as Neil literally tells him 'you're only halfway there'. When you're watching it the second time, you're watching the movie from Neil's perspective, understanding half the plot but still unsure of the final conclusion. You know the series of events in the film but its still satisfying because you're observing Neil setup the necessary series of events. There are two protagonists, that's why the Indian lady even said to John 'do you really think you're the only protagonist?'

The second time watching it, I found myself paying more attention to Neil's actions. His ending felt much more emotional the second time around after knowing their relationship. 10/10 movie. Super ambitious movie and fantastic to see someone doing something so big.

I also noticed the second time around, the masked character who saves JD Washington's life with the inverted bullet at the opera in the first scene is Neil. If you look closely you'll see his small keychain attached to his bag when he turns around.

Christopher Nolan is a genius, and instead of being arrogant or condescending in his work, he treats his audience as intelligent people and that is the uttermost form of respect he can show to them. All his movies have an element of uniqueness, unmatched by anybody else's work, and in fact often influencing others. I loved your video, and I agree: TENET is Christopher Nolan at his best and most creative, and the world needs more filmmakers like him!

The first two viewings are the most precious because the first one you're amazed at all of it and then the second one you can truly appreciate the details you didn't see before. It's an incredible film and society complains about unoriginal ideas but then proceeds to bash fantastically original ideas such as Nolan's films because they can't take the time to watch it again and appreciate it. If anything, it proves that Nolan is ahead of our time. Tenet is built in the future.

I have severe ADHD, and it is very rare for me to find something to enjoy so much that my brain gets stimulated for a prolonged period of time. TENET did that. The joy of simply not understanding and the urge to learn was just about enough. This movie wasn't only great, but also for a person like me, who finds even the highest rated movies boring, it was truly enjoyable in a sense that I had only felt while watching Interstellar or Inception. Edit: Thanks for the thousand likes! To everyone being like "The music is too loud" or "I can't rewatch it and my friends can't stand it" or "The movie is mind-numbing" Your brain is too slow (This is not an insult, just facts). Studies show that the average ADHD brain works 3 times faster than the average Neurotypical brain. You're just not fast enough for this movie.

But to be fair both the Prestige and Memento are movies that come once in a generation and are near perfect masterpieces. Personally, I think the main character is called the “protagonist” (and sometimes enemies “antagonist”) because he is just a part of a big system, playing his role to complete the story. I say this because the time reversing mechanics kind of implies that the future is decided. For example when John fights his own reverse version, it only makes sense that his future and decision to go back in time is already decided or otherwise that scene would never happen. The future hasn’t “happened” yet, but it’s decided it’s going to, and John is just playing his role.

I thought after my 2nd viewing the 2 reasons he names himself the protagonist is because 1. Like the video states hes an ex special forces who is presumed dead and aims to hide his identity from everyone especially with the severity of this new mission and 2. Nolan wants us to be in the Protagonists shoes as if tenet is not only his but our story we the viewer are the protagonist of our own stories, instead of the character having a name and in depth backstory it is left minimal so we can embody ourselves into his reality as just like the protagonist we have no knowledge of the future plot and discover details at the same time as him

Idk I don't get why this movie is so dividing. All this time we complain at the dumb transformers or star wars movies and now that we have a much more complicated, nuanced movie that is made with a blockbuster budget and scale people complain that it was "too complicated". Because most people like to pretend they are smarter than they actually are. A Transformers or Star Wars tries to cater to the lowest common denominator, so they are easy enough to grasp and to bitch and feel superior about. (A lot of the critique of those franchises is also just regurgitation of just a few intelligent breakdowns on youtube or reddit, however.) When they do get confronted with something that challenges their intellect, however, and they cannot consult an analysis for it, they'd rather blame their lack of understanding on a convoluted plot than their own level of intelligence.

It doesn't suck due to complication. It sucks because the Character arcs are poorly paced. The underlying plot it a bit goofy, Sator is not really that interesting of a villian and not even that terrifying no matter how hard he tries.

It does to the people claiming convoluted. I liked the archetypes behind the characters. Sator was conceptually a very interesting villain. If he cannot exist in the world, no one is allowed to. Sator has an insane motivation, that gets stronger as his life is ending. That kind of psychopatic drive makes him psychologically a terrifying villain. There were some minor plotholes due to the way some of the physics contradicts it self to serve the story. Other than than that I did not think it goofy. Interstellar had the same kind of problem with the tesseract in/near the black hole, where the physics need to become secondary for a little.

This movie is not only a cinematography masterpiece its a puzzle to be experienced for those who like puzzles as well even after leaving the theatre. The movie is a palindrome the beginning of the movie was the end of the story and the end of the movie was the begining of the story. The first half were blocks of scenes moving forward but with time running inverted from the perspective of the characters. (Hence why sound is so distorted towards the beginning) dialouge would not have made sense even if heard because answers are given before questions. The second half was time moving foward from the perspective of the characters. With that general information all the other details can be understood easily

Saying that sounds a little pretentious but it may be true, 2001 A Space Odyssey wasn't very well received but now it's a classic (from what I've heard) and is one of my favourite films of all time. The thing with Tenet, in my opinion, is that the characters are kind of bland except from Elizabeth Debicki's character. I tried to view it in a way that it's from her perspective but that just didn't work, I viewed it from The Protagonist's (wow... so meta and quirky) perspective as well as Niels perspective and none of them worked. It could all come down to the sound mixing, since the majority of the dialogue is so obscured that you don't get to know a lot about the characters. Though, the thing about that is on my second viewing, somehow, the sound mixing was fine and I could hear a lot more of the dialogue (in the Opera scene it makes sense that you couldn't hear a lot of it due to their masks and the tension, but I could hear the rest of the film quite well although the music did make it sound a bit muffled from time to time) I just couldn't connect with the characters at all. Maybe it is like Dunkirk, where it's not particularly about the characters but more about the situation they're in but for me it just doesn't work in Tenet. The reason why it works a bit more for me is because Dunkirk is based on a real historical event that the majority of people already feel emotional towards due to it being a very prominent event in WW2, so there fore we can connect it more and understand the characters. The different in Tenet is that it's new concepts and characters that aren't in a situation that's currently popular in the real world, so it's harder to connect with them since there isn't much actual character development. Even watching it the second time I felt the same way, even though I understood Neil and the Protagonist's relationship much more I just couldn't connect with them at all. I'm not saying this is a terrible movie, it's actually very impressive and entertaining, but after the first viewing it was kind of boring (unlike other Nolan films), I think the films most prominent issue is the pacing since everything just sorta... happens... Especially the scene after The Protagonist freezes in the car and then just suddenly woke up, I couldn't hear what Niel was saying so the reasoning for him just waking up didn't make much sense. These are just my opinions, I'm happy that people are enjoying this film and that there's a crowd for it, that's why there's different types of films that exist, but personally Tenet really didn't work for me.

Saw this on 70mm recently, and even though I wasn't completely in love with it after the lights came up and the credits rolled, I was glad that it had given me something that I hadn't experienced in a theater before. And glad, too, that Nolan didn't rely heavily on exposition to take center stage in the storytelling (which I felt was the case with a lot of Inception!) Very well done video!

Exactly. I saw it had a 70 on Metacritic and I was a bit disappointed. I thought the film would not be as good as I thought it would be. But then I watched it and WOW! How can people dislike this? Fine it's not geared for all audiences who may just want to relax and see a film they can enjoy once. But that's the thing about tenet. It doesn't encourage that. It's a film that encourages you to watch it again and the more times you watch it the more you grow to appreciate the plot and small details. Modern day movies tend to be like something you can watch once and then get ready for the next five installments. Tenet unlike most films is the opposite. The same can be said for interstellar. tenet is nothing less of a modern masterpiece.

I LOVE this video essay. It's everything I've been yelling at my phone about every time I see negative review about Tenet. Those reviews usually talk about the same 3 things. The first one is how confusing it is, to those people I'd have them view 3:13 to 3:52 . The second issue is the sound mixing to which I say just don't watch it in Dolby your first go around. Maybe try another format as the music does overshadow some of the dialogue there, but everywhere else in the movie, if you're paying attention, it's just fine maybe except for some parts of dialogue when they were on the blue boat. Lastly the third issue is the lack of emotional connection with the character, for this everything from 4:15 to 6:21 explains that. That and 13:23 to 13:57. People need to take more time to truly appreciate all that was put into this. We don't get this kind of experience all the time and this was the most daring one I've ever seen. Edit: He's also the person saving the world from the threats they never knew existed. An unsung hero basically, and they typically aren't credited, named or fleshed out as a character you need to connect with.

I personally thought looking back at the film that the conversation between Neil and the protagonist when they first met was the most important and foreshadowing, when he asks if john would use a child as a hostage, he says "no". But then when questioned about a woman, he answers along the lines of "it depends". The rest of the movie goes on to explain that, even if he did use a woman as a hostage or tool to negotiate he could not live with himself if anything happened to that person. It shows deeper than any backstory that could have been presented by a "glimpse of his past" or some exposition of said past. The power behind Nolan's story telling here is better than any movie I can think of in past years. We don't have to be fed information about the character to care and stand with him on this experience, and we don't have to know about the Protagonists past to know what he cares about and stands for too.

My god . . . . this video was incredible. I saw Tenet twice and enjoyed it, but had some issues with the film. However with some new insight I can’t wait to see it again this weekend. It’s really fun to talk with friends about the plot, who’s where in time, reading hundreds of Reddit threads and looking at a temporal pincer diagram for an hour. There are too many films that I forget after viewing, but I will always find myself thinking about Tenet, and how great unfiltered Nolan can be.

I never had a so good cinema experience. With Dolby Atmos and the power which Göransson gave to the film it was incredible. I was fascinated from the effects and the pure cinematography. And like evry Nolan film you have something to talk about and think over it with others. For me Nolan is the best filmmaker from all time. Yes I understand that Neil - is Sators son - MaximiLIEN (Palidrome of his name) indicating he is moving backwards in time. Temporal pincer movement. So Washington the Protagonist saves him and his mother when he is a young boy - but then he has to travel back in time when he is older from the future to save Washington and make the TeneT mission a success. I get it. It was just really poorly executed. It wasn't the story it was the execution of the story. It felt "disjointed" and "cold" no real emotional investment in any of the characters. Its not a patch on Momento which was really tightly edited and well constructed which emoted a lot of feeling. This simply didn't execute the story or vision anywhere near as well as many of his previous movies. I know many people who didn't even finish watching it they found the editing so bad.

C) We, the audience, can only assume "The Past Cannot be Changed" in TENET, we don't see evidence of Self-consistency at play. We are not witness to a pliable "Past." Meaning the Good Guys already won, endlessly. Yay.

Agree with you whole HEARTedly, man! A lot of people online have been saying that it's a detriment to Kat's character that she's so "tied down" by her kid instead of more "important" things a woman should be doing. But I bet a lot of those people who say those things aren't even parents. It's extremely tough to know what if feels like to be a parent, which I am now (my kids are really young). She is a true, loving, selfless mother who is also an accomplished career woman.

The love side of tenet I felt is Neil and JDW. Not necessarily romantic love, but you really feel their bromance and are heartbroken when Neil departs. You can even see Rob Pattinson exhibiting a kind of playfulness towards JDW in the scene where rob was trying to sleep but JDW had more questions. That scene was cute 😊

I remember when this first came out and people not liking it, It was easily one of my favorite films and my all time favorite of Christopher Nolan’s. Its premise was so bizarre compared to everything that was coming out and is still coming out, I’ll have people watch it from time to time and still get the “what is going on?” Or “I don’t get it?” Until suddenly they do and it’s amazing to watch that happen

Dude, thank you for acknowledging the audio used in Nolan's films. The method use of this type of sound mixing interwoven in his films I think is a way to include the audience in the film, more directly. A good film is a film that elicits emotion and the sound editing used in Nolan's films is so threaded with all the feels it's impeccable. In Dunkirk I felt as though I felt the dread the soldiers felt hearing those planes, hearing the engines of enemies, etc. In Inception, I was on the edge of my seat with wonder hearing those brass tones while in the dream world, exploring consciousness. Don't even get me started on Interstellar and the others. But, seriously. Tenet's score is sublime. Just like Stanley Kubrick, the perfect use of sound mixing when it's needed and unexpected provides such an added in-depth touch to the movie. If the movie really is about the concept and understanding between Control and Freedom/Love then the use of sound editing creates a wonderful atmosphere to feel many profound emotions throughout the course of the film. Maybe I'm just a touchy person but after someone else on youtube indicated, I really do believe the film is literally about free will, the Freedom of choice, and choosing Love above Control. We see embodiments of things people desire/want in these characters. Sator being Control, the Protagonist being Free Will. Neil also representing Freedom of choice as well as Love. Selfless love through the ultimate defiance against Control with self-sacrifice to save his friends and the world. I could go on and on but I digress. Also, someone needs to analyze this film further because if you watch it a couple times, you'll be able to tell that the colors Yellow, Blue, Red, and Black are quite dominant throughout the movie. In a different order, I believe certain lines in the script of the movie in relation to the color-coding provide an additional timeline as well. Sator states as shit goes down to his Russian Henchmen "Watch Everything. Give me all the details." The watch everything part I feel was Nolan stating his 2-second warning to the audience that the timeline is speeding up and watch closely, don't blink. And that's where the colors come in. You see the colors come in and out before this halfway point in the movie, but it's at this stage where the colors start changing their entropy, from backward to forwards to backward, etc etc. Go watch it again you'll see what I'm talking about lol.

I swear I am not lying. I saw it 4th time in Gateway Film Center Columbus and surprisingly there was no issue with Sound mix at all. The dialogues were coming from where they should be from and the music. It was very clear.

Thank you for speaking up, Tenet is definitely the best film in years. I’ve done my research and watch it 3 times, and in the loop of ost. So much respect gained for Mr. Nolan after first viewing even I only understood 40% of it. Because in Nolan I trust. His ability of storytelling is unquestionable. I believe if he has another way to tell the story, he would’ve done it. The rawness, energy, execution, commitment to visual while introducing a new concept of time nobody has ever applied on screen. Cinema is reinvented because of directors like Nolan constantly push its limit. Reminding us what genius filmmaking is capable of, why we go to theater... Christopher Nolan is the director of directors, a true modern day maestro.

Yarbloco he didn’t shoot himself, that’s what you see. You have to be in bullet’s position and feel it. The protagonist is trying to prevent the whole world being inverted! When not just a person or a bullet is inverted but everything, that’s the end of the world. TENET is not the power to invert time, TENET is how human perceive time. TENET is causation. Human have to protect the way “time” is experienced by us in order to survive.

The fact that you said you have watched this movie 5 times struck a chord with me. I only watched it once last week. But I felt like I wanted to watch it again immediately after. Not because I was so in love with it but because I was so curious. And maybe only 3 or 4 movies have done that for me in my 27 years on this planet, and one of those films was The Prestige.
