I made that comment with no regard to any sort of physics, but in the case of a head on collision, a modern car will crumple and absorb the impact. In light of my comment's lack of context, if a car were to absorb an impact in the same way current vehicles do, yet not sustain the detrimental damage we're used to seeing after such an event, I would say it deserves a higher crash rating than "good." Again, sorry you couldn't connect the dots ;)

Tesla received a crash score a little bit higher than my car, because of all the hazard recognition cameras, sensors, radars that take action moments before a crash (which I don't have) - but the next best cars on crash test that are not as technological is Volkswagen Group cars (Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat etc). Volvo was long renowned but no longer drive their cars off the pier to crash test them, they adopted a more "sporty" image and their vehicle rigidity suffered as a result.

Well actually cybertruck should be less safer than other teslas. Crumple zone is what absorbs the impact as the force needs to transfer somewhere. In case of cybertruck the body/exoskeleton is hard and won't crumple as easily.

You can see quite clearly from the pictures that Tesla moves backwards in a collision and it says that not all collision forces are committed to changing the car's fashion, ie the collision is elastic and this means that the g forces on passengers are much higher than cars without a rigid body. Tesla can be compared to the oldest cars with a rigid beam frame.

Where model 3 falls short is the neck whiplash protection. Due to unadjustable headrests one needs to sit askew so that one can keep one's head in a relaxed upright position. That in turn exposes you to a whiplash injury since you head will not be stopped by the headrest in case of a crash. They really should also use taller manikins in these tests (at 01:29 you can see how small they are)!

Found this little Easter egg in the IIHS Small Overlap test on the Model 3.. "Although intrusion overall into the driver's space was minimal, door hinge pillar intrusion contributed to a moderate risk of injury to the left lower leg." The Model 3 seems to be having a little trouble with the Small Overlap like the Model S did..

In the test conduct by C-IASI (china) the car didn't seem to have those problems. And I think they updated the 2022 design because on the iihs website, on the passenger side small overlap test, all the categories are good.

@@meriofrog Glad to hear it. I have a Tesla Model Y on order, so I believe Tesla's are safe. But I am also a Volvo fan and plan to buy my wife an EX60 due out probably a year after the EX90 this month. Having studied Volvo safety for a long time, I know their crash test facility is the best in the world, and can do crashes at any angle with both cars moving. Something Tesla, NCAP, the IIHS and the NHTSA can't do. So Volvo has duplicated 1,000s of actual accidents in the Volvo Safety Center, which means they do a lot more than jsut do the simplistic crash tests of the crash testing agencies.

You can also check the Tesla crash test facility on their yt channel, its definitely very advanced and more technologically and data driven, while Volvo seems to be using more hands on crashes. In my opinion, both cars are very safe.
