Yeah the reason why this is a plothole is because the infinity stones themselves are extremely undercooked concepts. It was originally meant to be just the soul stone, but then they wanted to add 5 more, so they took 5 of the 6 and put them under the watchful eye of the Infinity Watch, who the leader was Adam Warlock, wielder of the soul stone. At that point in the comics they didn't know where the reality stone was, most likely because the writers realized that it would sorta be overpowered.
