One of the most popular accessories for the iPad is Apple's Pencil. It's a great companion, but can be a bit pricey. However, there are alternative active styluses available that cost much less, but do they perform just as well? I asked a Vancouver based artist Audrey Lemond to help me evaluate the options.

Very true. It's rare I hear professionals in any field complaining about the price of an item that is commonly used in the field. Of course, there will always be super-high-end items in each field that even professionals or small teams deem out of reach - but a hundred dollar pencil that dramatically improves your ability to do your job (where your yearly salary is often HUNDREDS OF TIMES that pencil's price) is a no brainer.

If you don't know how to properly use the tool or medium you're working with then it will still look bad :/ if anything bad tools or mediums just hinder an artist and make it difficult to see their actual potential. As a professional artist myself, the Apple Pencil is the only one I would ever even consider. Pressure sensitivity is one of the most important features and anything lacking that makes it a non-starter. But yeah, if you're not doing art in Procreate or CSP or something? I guess just whichever one is most comfortable in your hand for regular writing. If jotting things down is more important then pressure sensitivity itself might be a negative! Having to press down to take notes quickly could be a hassle I would think.

I am an artist of similar level, just way older. I am a good 20 years on Wacom's, I own every iPad that does pencils too. I cant say the Wacom and iPad pencils compare in any way, other than they paint. But the truth is not just in the pencil. The glass makes a difference too. Wacom has a slightly 'frosted' feel, that adds resistance to the drawing. Plus Wacom has two buttons and eraser on the back - which totally sucks on the Apple pencil for not having either !! Even after 2 odd years now on the iPad Pro and pencil, I will always go back to the Wacom when ever time and location permits ! (I even have on Cintiq 22HD in a flight case to travel)

I own that "Amazon special" pencil from the video, and for what I use it for, that being note taking and maths, it's perfect. The magnetic attachment is actually super useful and I use it all the time, and the lack of pressure sensitivity doesn't bother me because I don't draw practically ever.

@@Samuel.55 I hated carrying around pencil cases, stationary, notebooks, textbooks with me all the time as it was really heavy in my backpack, and once I got home I didn't really have anywhere to put all this paper, so an iPad was great from that perspective as it was so much lighter. As for organisation, I recommend either goodnotes and or wondernote as both are great, however I prefer goodnotes as it has very easy to use built in folders, so I have a folder for each subject with sub folders for each topic, and there I'd put my notes. I'd also make sure to give it a sensible title so I can just click search and find what I'm looking for, something you can't do with paper. I also find the iPad is far more powerful, I like to keep my textbook I'm using or safari open in slide over, and I just find it more convenient to use then having separate books or devices for each thing

As soon as you said that none of the cheaper alternatives had pressure sensitivity, I was shocked. As an illustrator (primarily digital), not having pressure sensitivity is a complete deal-breaker if I want to use it in any professional capacity and I think all the artists I know would feel the same. If you want to have variation in line weight and you don’t want to take forever going in and adding line weight variation in post, pressure sensitivity is essential.

I've used a Wacom (Intuos 3, bought back when intuos was the professional line) for years and years. The pressure sensitivity is the main thing that's so appealing. But the accuracy - (does it draw EXACTLY where your pen is, and does it register very light touches) - was also SO much better than any other drawing tablets on the market.. (On cheaper tablets, the cursor sometimes jumped around, causing a glitch in your stroke, or selecting the wrong thing on screen) I really, really want to finally try the Apple Pencil.. Need to somehow upgrade to an iPad that supports the 1st gen version. I'll take all the inconveniences (lightning to charge, etc) gladly, if it means I can actually draw on my iPad (and not just in select apps) And I agree that even 130$ is not much, especially for professionals. Specialized calligraphy pens can cost half of that, and are not as versatile. I found it's worth it to have quality tools. (be it drawing implements, or actual tools) The amount of extra joy you get, and less frustration, less time lost, less time correcting... (Even actual graphite pencils.. It's worth it to spend a little more to get quality. It makes a difference in the results, and you spend less time screaming at inanimate objects ;))

I’m a student and the reason I chose to go for the Apple Pencil is simply because it integrates better with the iPad, the thing about apple is they design products to work which each other while other apple accessory companies design the product to work for another product, just the nature support within the os for an Apple Pencil was worth it as I knew I would be getting the most out of what this type of product could do. If you go for the base iPad Air I’m sure Apple Pencil price will seem a bit steep however as a student I felt that the cellular model is so much more compelling as it would mean I don’t have to look for wifi in dozens of different campus buildings and could sit down anywhere I want and still be able to access everything I needed, and given that this model with taxes runs at just over $1000 here in Canada the extra $200 spent on the Apple Pencil wasn’t too big of a jump and when I’m already spending over a thousand dollars on something I might as well get the best I could around that price range.

Having had worked for Apple, where I was immersed in their culture, style, /everything , for over two years, I really do love the style you have with MacAddress. It stands out well from everything else at LMG in a great way. But it’s still got that LMG feel. In regards to this video, and the Apple Pencil, I use both varieties on work iPads and my personal iPad. I’ve tried two out of the four alternatives you featured, and I still love the original. I do very little drawing, but when I do grab the pencil, it’s great to have it work the way Apple intended. At least, I hope that’s how they intended them to work. Also, been loving the content and the hosting work Jonathan.

@DavidStruveDesigns
@DavidStruveDesigns Жыл бұрын
Yeah my thoughts exactly. Of course the Apple Pencil is the best, it was designed and developed from the ground-up to be used with the iPad and vice-versa. And not a single Pencil alternative has ALL of the features of their Apple counterpart because that would make their product a) essentially a clone of the Pencil that Apple doesn't get 100% of the money for and b) potentially even better than the Pencil, and Apple certainly can't be having that!! But they're not alone in this - Wacom is the same with their Wacom styluses, as are most companies that have their own ecosystems where 3rd party products/content are concerned - it's rare that they get to compete on a truly even playing field and even rarer for the 3rd party to produce a definitively better product. And often when they do, they end up getting bought out by that main company pretty quickly any way. Such is the world of modern business, where competition is great - but only if they're producing a lower quality/feature product than you!

Respectfully, as a medical student the pressure sensitivity of the Apple Pencil is a huge asset to my note taking. It is very sensitive to the point that I can have a lot of granular control over what I am annotating and diagramming. I am also an engineer and I can say the same for my experience in that field. I’ve used both the first and second generation pencils and they are equally as great in that regard. Plus the inductive charging of the second generation pencil is super super convenient. You don’t ever have to think about battery which for me is a huge deal.

My dad got a cheap apple pencil from the black friday deals and I have been using it since. Before then, I had two different 13-14$ styluses that I would use to draw, but they were HORRENDUS because they wouldn't have palm rejection, let alone pressure sensitivity. Other than that, the biggest reason to buy the apple pencil for me is the fact that it just snaps into my ipad's case, and does not need to be separately charged. This takes out A LOT of stress of remembering to charge such a non -essential item, as well as solving to storage problem. I would recommend an apple pencil for that reason alone.

Engineer here. I happen to have the Apple Pencil as my main stylus on the iPad Pro, but I have owned other stylus/tablet combos before, including Wacoms. My feeling on this is that most engineers aren’t going to sweat the price difference between these styluses. I will probably never notice the difference between the styluses, but hey the official Pencil has all the bells and whistles for not a whole lot more. A non-professional artist might sweat it though.

@@TalesOfWarjust to clarify, i'm not saying this isnt worth it, its worth it for the artist who wants to draw on their ipad. pressure sensitivity is mainly for artist. now i say, overpriced because for $130 there are complete budget screen tablets for that price. this is just a pencil. i bought my wacom tablet for my laptop less than the cost of this pencil and that was a tablet and pen (non screen tablet). although im an artist and can afford this, i cant justify spending more than i spent on my wacom also because i dont use my ipad pro for art, mainly for youtube and content consumption. if i used my ipad pro for art i'd consider getting one. so again, its worth it for artist who want to draw on their ipad. for others who want to write not worth it. other things i dont use on my ipad pro is the keyboard or screen protector, again because i use my ipad pro just for content consumption not art. i occasionally use a case. i think find what works for you. might i be interested in drawing on the ipad pro? not really, because when im on the ipad usually im lounging and just watching movies. when im doing art, i try to be "serious" be on computer start and finish. because i do art for work. i've passed the stages of doing art for fun. for fun its movies and youtube for me. hehe. well, thats probably the real reason. lol. so if you wanna do art on the ipad, go for it. easy choice there.
