If we're really going to get into this, I don't believe in a "greatest" anything when it comes to art. It's just too subjective, unless you just wanna go off pure accolades, achievements, and numbers. But to me, music is ultimately about enjoyment, and The Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, and Run-D.M.C have all put out tons of music I enjoy. They're all greats in my book. As for who which group is the greatest, I'll let y'all worry about that.

Exactly! This... The only things I want to comment on are the accolades - Well, artistically speaking, they hold no worth. The other thing is - Why does this always come down to race? It's sad. What a horrible handicap and limitation.

Out of this list I'm gonna go ahead and say Tribe have the 2 best albums in MM and LET. However I feel a certain asian inspired group from the bastard borough is left off. 36 Chambers is imo THE best group album in all of hip-hop, and it's not even close, it's pretty much 10/10 bangers all the way through. Without them I don't think NY Hip-Hop evolves the way it does, no mafioso and no grimy beats, from 36 chambers to Tical to OB4CL to Liquid Swords to return to the 36 chambers to Iron Man to Wu-Tang forever (and yeah considering how RZA is a througline and the heavy colabs on almost every solo album, I'm gonna count it all under one), no other group matches this run, heck it'd be hard to find anyone in all of hip-hop who can match this run. Not to mention Deck is the greatest opener in all of hip-hop, so good 2pac even had to remove him from his track (alright that's debatable, that's what I think happened).

I think if the beastie boys weren’t white they would still be considered one of the greatest because their music was so different and more eclectic than any other hip hop group at the time, the music and influence transcends their race or success because of it

The next record, pauls boutique sounds NOTHING like anything that had come before it in 88 and very little since. Then the fact that capitol had paid them a huge advance and didnt want anything to do with them allowed them to build G-Son studio, get back on the instruments and make two of the most eclectic records in rock/rap history (check your head and ill communication).

Ok 100k people watched the Beastie Boys video - not even 2k people comment, and with that only a portion bash you.... I'd say the "silent majority" heard your argument, processed it level headedly, and kept it moving... MOST folks were not misrepresenting the points in your video. just the vocal edge... which should be addressed, but you can't act it was EVERYBODY...

Silent majority like the ones that voted for Trump. It’s facts that if B.B. was not white they probably would’ve been ignored. Black people are the minority so your argument about the comments prove the black panther theory that because of a black super hero movie took this long it shows how we have to see white culture because it’s most of the time not a representation of us. Hip-hop was created by us as a way to talk about our culture so when theres a white rapper most black won’t have the same connection to their music no matter how popular they are. They’re like a white super hero, we are forced by the majority to see that hero if you want to read comics and a lot of times the white rapper gets bigger audience just because he is able to connect with a white person in the same way that a black super hero would connect to black kids.

@def creator Actually know, Run-DMC were more trying to do the opposite of the Furious 5 and them, who were overly connected still to the Disco era. Run-DMC separated Hip Hop from the flashy, disco style music that Kurtis and Flash and them were still mainly working off of, Run-DMC brought the boom-bap, minimal breakbeats from the street with hardcore, aggressive rap delivery, unlike anything before them. Caz, and Melle Mel and them were pioneers too, great and all, but RUN-DMC did there own thing

@def creator That might be true, but RUN DMC and JMJ took hip-hop to another level period! The music was called rap before they came out on the scene, and when they were through with it, it was known as HIP-HOP!

Beastie Boys may not have been THE greatest groups, but they were influential in the Rap Game. Remember, their album, "Licensed to Ill" is the first Hip-Hop album to go number one, making Hip-Hop more mainstream along with Run-DMC and LL Cool J. And also, they released one of the dopest Hip-Hop albums of all time, "Paul's Boutique". If you never listen to it, I highly recommend it.

The consistent quality of Beastie Boys' work and the fearless experimentation, is what sets them apart. I love RUN DMC, and Sucker Mc's is the best hip hop track ever recorded, but I don't think they maintained the level of quality over the years that Beastie Boys did. I'd argue that they were better Tribe too.

Yup, Murs nailed it with the RUN DMC reason. As matter of fact, they even used a demo RUN DMC song "Slow and Low" on their first album. However, the Beasties are one of my favorite groups. And not because they are white (Shit, I'm not white!), but because they had a unique style and respected the culture. To discredit them based on race is stupid.

Eminem’s first album went quadruple platinum. Being white is the primary reason for his record breaking success. Record execs “tried” to tailor him even more to this “particular demographic”. Beastie Boys were no different. In fact, they slowly moved away from the culture with every album. To dismiss the affects & benefits of race is naive
@CarlosHernandez-rl2wg
@CarlosHernandez-rl2wg 7 жыл бұрын
Micah Atkins Yes, I am aware of marketing and fans focusing on their being white, which can catapult one to stardom (Ex. Vanilla Ice). But, from a non-industry and non-racial perspective I can't discredit unique skill and influence. Easy E was a fan of the Beasties. Kendrick is a fan of Eminem. Do I think the Beasties or Eminem are the end all be all GOATs? No. I would have to give RUN DMC the 1 slot for a group for being the complete image and sound of a B-boy, going on big tours, getting endorsements, and having a worldwide impact culturally/sonically. The Beasties and Eminem are still respected in my book for contributing to the culture regardless of race.

I'm down with BEASTIE BOYS for life because them niggas are funky! But they were punk rockers first! They knew that punk was on it's way out, and were inspired by this amazing art, style, attitude, culture and music that was coming from poor, yet proud and strong black and Latino cats from the streets of NYC. They had to copy this style, and they used the almighty influence of RUN DMC to get into it. Had it not been for the fact that they were WHITE, a lot of their white fans would have never bothered with rap music period!

I got into RunDMC and Beasties at the same time as a white kid in LA, and then Tribe dropped Scenario and I looked at me friends and we couldn't believe what we were hearing. I think Tribe could have done instrumental albums if they didn't have so many problems with each other and their label, and I think Wutang could have too. But Beastie Boys did it! And their longevity and their broad appeal and their prolific output puts them on top. Not by a lot, but still. And I'll never forget when Busta comes in on the track. Life-changing moment. I think the thing to remember about any subculture is that it's always symbiotic, RUN-DMC wouldn't have been as good as they were without the Beastie Boys, Visa Verca. King of Rock itself has huge rock and punk influences that I don't think would have been as prominent if Beastie Boys weren't also doing what they had been doing. Equally RUN-DMC had an iconic sound that the Beastie boys massively borrowed from as stated in the video.

But the Beastie boys did influence the WHOLE rap rock genre. And the whole “what if they were white” argument is an interesting idea, but it really holds no weight when you remember that without the Beastie Boys, hip hop would still only be a black genre. But this was a great vid with mature and humble responses to the irrational vulgarity spewed out in the comments. Let me add my perspective. I was introduced to rap in the mid 80's. I use to pick up WJLB out of Detroit. That was my first introduction to rap. I enjoyed listening to the beats, the poetry, and the different styles. For Christmas, my dad bought me a mix tape of various rap artists such as Curtis Blow, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys. I played it all the time. But my big introduction was to Run DMC and their collaboration with AeroSmith with Walk This Way. It brought together this new form of music, and rock, which I do like. This was the first rap album I bought and Run DMC, to this day, is my all time favorite group. The second rap album I bought was Licensed to Ill. I was naive to the origins of rap, but I liked it. As I grew up, and listened to more groups and began understanding the origins, my taste were for the groups that rapped about the social injustices of life in America. KRS-1 and Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy brought the black experience to me and helped me to understand other cultures. But, without groups such as Run DMC and the Beastie Boys opening up that world, I would have still been naive to the life and experiences of so many people. Are the Beastie Boys a GOAT, no, but they were a gateway for curiousity to explore and learn black life and culture, and for some of us, a beginning to understand, learn and become enlightened.

I feel like the continuous mention of black vs white keeps polarizing things. Maybe it's because it's not as prevalent here in the Netherlands as it is in the U.S.... It feels as if both "sides", which I hate to call them, feel the need to keep mentioning it. Man, I wish I could take that polarization away from you all :( As a young adult, being a teenager in the early 2000s, I remember being a hero when I came to school with an Outkast album. Also when I arrived with The Eminem Show. We all had love for black artist and for white artists... Hell, we just loved good artists. I stopped to make lists about who is the best or greatest, because it always ends in arguments. Let's just respect the artists and love the fucking great music they all gave us. Black or white or whatever colour on the spectrum

Yeah the divide here in the US sucks. Racism is basically taught to you over here. I grew up in an awesome area in South Jersey where we as kids wouldn't listen to our parents or any other elders about keeping to one's own race. We All played sports together and all the other things kids do together. All colors,nationalities it didn't matter to us. I'm 51 now and I still have all those same friends of different colors and nationalities. Enjoyed learning about all the different cultures. Seems like racism is getting worse here as I age. Such a shame.

I’m late af but I want to express that the Beastie Boys are considered one of the best not on the basis of race but that they experimented just like RUN-DMC with infusing Rock with Rap which opened up rap music for many other people, at the time during the 80s rock bands were much bigger than rap music at the time, I am not saying that they weren’t mainstream but when RUN-DMC and Aerosmith collaborated to make a cover of walk this way it opened rap music to a new group of people. Public enemy collaborated with heavy metal band Anthrax to make Bring the noise which was also a big band. Rap and Rock collaborations made new genres of music like RapRock with bands such as P.O.D. Kid Rock... it also influenced punk music as a whole like the offspring, SR-71...

Murs, my homie... this is a country that has a majority white population. The idea of "white privilege" breaks down when you include any Asian peoples or Arabs or South Americans. The statistics used to claim white Europeans have an advantage in today's society are never per capita nor do they include the groups I mentioned. This idea is scapegoating and it comes from people who seek to profit off creating racism. We are not our grandfather's grandfather. How many generations can we use to excuse our actions?? Don't make everything about color. Especially hip hop.

I watched the Beasties video last week and you said it yourself, as far as 27 years in the game, over 20 million units sold. No other group comes close. The longevity, the numbers, the creative boundries they push. The fact that they never compromised for the sake of fame. Shit, coming off of License To Ill the break Pauls Boutique. The opposite of trend. However, they stayed relevant, always divided the cuts between the 3 of them and never compromised, even when it came to dropping the mic to release some straight funk with the help of Money Mark. Now I'm not the biggest B Boys fan but I have to give credit where it's due. Combining the longevity, the number of albums sold, the structure of their sound as well as their philanthropy in Tibet and political awareness. You can't touch them. Hip Hop isn't even my preferred genre but I know what's good. I love and grew up with Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, even Bone and NWA but the facts don't lie and all the facts point to the Beasties. Who damn well earned their place by paying some heavy dues on the early days. And once again, LL ain't no damn group! lol Well that's my 2 cents. I'm waiting for an episode on the early-eighties alterative rap scene (not nu-metal!!) more like Basehead, De la, TCQ and that whole genre. Would be a treat Love the show Murs, stay true to yourself-

Hip hop had been circulating with “white people” for just as long. A lot of us of a certain age and background came into it via punk rock and hardcore and skateboarding late 70s early 80s. And on the whole they embraced all aspects of it. And to then see it onstage supporting Madonna of all fucking things was quite the WTF moment for a lot of us. In the early 90s skateboarding REALLY switched from punk to hip hop. Style of dress,attitude and video soundtracks.

The Beastie Boys have 5 classic albums: Licensed To Ill Paul's Boutique Check Your Head Ill Communication Hello Nasty Not many groups can boast that kind of ammo. Outkast is the closest. I think they have 4 solid classics: Southernplaya..., ATLiens, Aquemini and Stankonia. Some fans might say Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is a classic, too, but I disagree. If it is, then they would win with 6 classics, because double albums count twice. EPMD is another group that has 4 legitimate classics: Strictly Business, Unfinished Business, Business As Usual and Business Never Personal. I can't think of no other hip hop group that has at least 4 classic albums other than The Beastie Boys, Outkast and EPMD. A Tribe Called Quest might come the closest with People's Instinctive Travels..., Low End Theory, Midnight Marauders, and Beats, Rhymes and Life, but I think the latter is debatable. That's just me. But should classic albums be the only criteria? What about groups who may only have one or two classics, but a whole lot of solid material throughout their career? Groups like The Roots come to mind. I think they only have 2, maybe 3 classics. Do You Want More??!!?? and Illadelph Halflife are definite classics, and Things Fall Apart is a strong maybe. Their post-2000 output is too hit or miss for me. Yet they remained consistently innovative and relative. What about impact? Groups that are strong in that area are Run DMC, Public Enemy, The Beastie Boys, Boogie Down Productions, Wu Tang Clan, Black Moon, Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, The Roots, Mobb Deep, Das Efx, NWA, Digable Planets, PM Dawn, and Bone Thugs N Harmony. Arguments can be made on how all of those groups have qualitatively impacted hip hop and the artists who followed them. This debate, like everything else when it comes to art, will come down to subjective sensibility, unless we can come up with objective standards that affect all who create hip hop music. Album sales are about as objective as you can get, but true hip hop heads have always rejected that criterion due to the fact that purity and the principles of true hip hop are often compromised for album sales. Q-Tip once spat, "rap is not pop, so if you call it that, then stop." So this debate will continue to linger with no real consensus, I'm afraid.

I don't know about Beasties being the goat, but they are right up there. They'll no doubt always be an important link in the chain. With hip hop, I have to give Run DMC that title. There's no group that did more for hip hop on all fronts than they did. I don't think there's any one group that not only single handedly brought hip hop to mainstream, but also brought a musical legitimacy to it. Before them, many saw hip hop as some expanded poetry or something. The majority rejected hip hop as a form of music until Run DMC being themselves changed people's perception of the art and began to see it as musical. The Beasties simply took what they did and applied the cement to what was built. Run DMC will always take to title of best and most important hip hop group. But you might say with the combination of them and the Beasties, there would be no turning back. Hip hop was now on the map for good.

Love the Beastie Boys, if we're talking groups they're probably in my top 3. I gotta put OutKast over them just my opinion. I think NWA goes #1 I mean Dr Dre, Ice Cube and Eazy E between the 3 of them that's a huge influence to this day. Don't get me wrong the Beastie Boys sold the shit outta records, kept their signature sound while constantly experimenting with new styles but all art is subjective just depends who you ask. Im guessing that Wu-Tang has been left out of this video as the groups success is overshadowed by the success of the individual artists. My two cents: the Beastie boys > RUN DMC, why? RUN DMC and the Beastie Boys both emerged from the genesis of mainstream hip hop and the beastie boys were originally a skinny boys carbon copy of RUN DMC however the ability to go away and re-invent their delivery makes the beastie boys superior over the span of their career. The lyricisism of the beasties definatly evolved even if their flow didnt change much. Intergalactic took the Beastie Boys to another dimension. A Tribe Called Quest is undeniably the best Hip Hop "group". I feel its more accurate to define Wu-Tang as a label

The Beastie Boys are my personal favorite hip hop group. As a kid from suburban NJ, they introduced me to the true greats of hip hop, some of which you mentioned in this video. You also left some out. There's just so much good music. It's hard to nail down a "best ever", when we are all different ages and come from different places. In ten years, some people might even put Migos in that conversation, if they continue their success. If you were around for the birth of hip hop, you might name Melle Mel, or if you're Kool Moe D pick yourself, as the best rapper ever. So many greats out there, it's best to go back and enjoy it all on a good pair of headphones. I always enjoy this show. Keep it up. Digging the new tunes as well.

Meh. I'm white (pretty much). Run DMC don't move me like the Beastie Boys do. In the end, that's what it's all about. Does the music move you. And that really is subjective.

Oddly enough, you says RIP to Phife dog and Easy E but you don’t say RIP to Yauch when announcing each groups members. And the inconsistencies between this and your last video are so incredibly apparent, you can tell this was done to save face amongst the community.

Beastie Boys ARE great! They are MORE hip hop than 90% of rappers today. They deserve respect! But, they are not the greatest. But still, there's no need to downplay them because of their skin tone. Many people in the comment section don't even know what real hip hop is because they grew up after the fact, and would prefer lil pump over legends anyway. I rate them in the top 10. (wu, kast, p.e., atcq, epmd, nwa, etc, being above.

I appreciate and agree with your first video on why the Beastie Boys are the greatest rap group of all time. Their consistency, longevity, ability to adapt in the face of an ever changing Hip Hop/Rap world and their efforts to maintain and spread their affection, adoration and love for Old School Hip Hop is outstanding. Their loyalty to Hip Hop and to each other is amazing. Run-DMC whom they of course owe an invaluable debt to, are way way way high on the plateau of every group that came after them. They are on a class by themselves as is the founders who came before them. Run-DMC are untouchable in my book beyond any ranking whatsoever. I feel if one is going to rank, start with everyone else after them. Yes, there are more complex and interesting groups like the ones you mention in this. However, I am still sticking with your excellent and exceptional argument for why The Beastie Boys are the greatest rap group of all time. I’d also recommend watching the Beastie’s live on stage documentary available to stream on Apple TV, where the surviving members Adrock and Mike D give for the most part, a frank, honest and entertaining assessment of their history.

In his last video he specifically said he didn't think they were the best, and he didn't think they were a crew. He said the best crew was wu Tang and that Beastie boys were the "greatest group" (not best, not crew)

I'm not into rap that much to judge who's the greatest rap group. I like the Beasties and The Fugees a lot cause they hit me just in the right time. But rather who's the greatest and stuff, I find it way more important that groups like these managed to bring people together. I have some great memories of us being kids and listening to "The Score" where skin colors didn't matter at all and I wish it wouldn't be some naive privileged fantasy now of how things should be but they're still not.
