I like the show but it's a shame that it used clickbait to draw me in. There's so much more to learn about the Opium Wars than the whitewashed narrative given here. I like Tony Robinson and I'm a huge fan of Time Team but I'm a bit warn out on the history "they" want us to believe and not learning history the way it happened. Don't you think the East India Co. dumping opium on China (like China is dumping fentanyl on the US) (payback?) deserves more than a minute and a half. Especially, when it's the premise of the title.

Actually, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was the biggest company in the world. Today it would be about $7.8 trillion worth. It was the worlds first mulitnational company and had dominance between 1602 and 1796. They also had the world first stock exchange. Furthermore, I love this channel. But can agree with many people how misleading the title is to its content.

Wow that is impressive. Esp considering that they basically had to build their own Army,Navy, Banking institutions and Intelligence gathering to protect their business interests and employees across the globe. Everything from Tinkers, Tailors, Sailors, Stockbrokers and CEO's. A Proxy Government with more power and international influence than 90% of actual Countries of that time. Thank you for the info - that will be my next subject to research.

I love these shows and Tony Robinson. However... THIS one had a "click-bait" title. Not a word about how devastating Opium was to the populace of China, the Opium Wars or that the greed of The East India Company was flagrant beyond imagination. For tea? Really? It was MUCH MORE than that. Please, Absolute History: start delivering on your titles' promises. Australian wine and some stupid cake got much more air time than the Opium insanity. Edit: Oh, and: that incredible waste of food to illustrate a mutinous battle actually turned my stomach. And it purportedly came from a tray of food meant for a table of hungry patrons. That was a rather tasteless bit of staging, really.

I had a conversation with someone recently on this topic & they mentioned that Heroin isn't coming into America like it was because the Poppy Fields in Afghanistan were burned & alot of the heroin was coming from there. The Chinese still hold this against the British and to some extent they are right to but-- the British did not sell Opium to each and every user., the Chinese decided to buy it, sell it and use it ,. The same goes for America - Those that make it and ship drugs are to blame to some extent - but its the Americans who buy it, distribute it and use it.

Nice revisionist outlook you have there. Tell me - when did Mexico, Colombia, and the like, go to war to force America to open its ports to addictive drugs? What, never? Your revisionism is as bogus as your analogy.

@@lairdcummings9092 You seem not to understand my point. They, the makers of drugs did not force anyone - the Americans and other users, dealers, did that themselves - the same for the Chinese - no one forced them to accept Opium - the Chinese were at war with each other- the British as sellers and Chinese as buyers took advantage of the poor situation. No one forced the ordinally Chinese to sell or use Opium. That is my point.

@@RDSimpson gat makes your position even more morally reprehensible. The British showed up, malice aforethought, cargo holds full of addictive drugs, and *forced* the Chinese government to allow them to sell their poison, *at gunpoint.* And you're apologizing for that by blaming the addicts who had the opium pushed at them by the imperial might of the British Empire. That is a disgusting and vile point of view. You sicken me.

Meh, Britain gave them ample opportunity to trade something other than opium. In the 1790s they sent a diplomatic mission and tried to introduce steam engines and mechanical clocks and a whole assortment of new inventions but unfortunately for the Chinese the senile corpulent Qing emperor chose to foolishly waved away Britains generous offer as barbarian baubles thereby delaying the modernisation of China by decades . If they hadn't been so arrogant they could've been an early adopter of industrialisation, guess they should've just bought the clocks and regency era brick a brack when they still had the chance! Unlike China Japan was smart and they continued to study western sciences and technology even during the age of official isolation, thats why Japan was able to modernise and industrialise so rapidly while China got left behind.
