It's not just the supernatural side of the wolf that was so chilling, it was the consistent uncertainty to determine if Death was a figment of Puss's imagination or not. First, the wolf appears to be a tangible, mortal mercenary but they were alone in the bar. Next, he seemed to be a figment of Puss's imagination because no one else seemed to notice the wolf in public areas. Finally, we find out that he wasn't hallucinating and that Death is quite literally a supernatural being that is hunting down Puss when everyone else can see him. That's what was so cool about this movie. Death had less than 10 minutes of screen time and he had the most impact out of any character because of how haunting he is.

For the last one I also think death wanted everyone there to see him unlike in the other cases. As it fits his purpose and teaches a lesson. They were in the middle of the wishing Star. They we’re grasping at powers that’s already at his beck and call. Plus by that time they understood the rules of the star Then boom death just walks in thru the fade as if it’s nothing playing with it’s property’s. not paying attention to anyone but puss who just screamed to the world what his wish was. Death was after him and he was coming. Meny people wish to be a god, own the world or who knows what else. The thing is everything dies one day. He put the fear of death in all of them

@@santiagofernandezosuna1450 Except only Puss saw him during the Baker's Dozen brawl where at least 3 of the bakers died thanks to Jack's baby unicorn horn crossbow. I think Kevin was on the right track that it was Death's choice and intention that the others could see him at the end. Because he had started personally hunting Puss as get back for his disrespect and disregard for death in the pursuit of his "legend." Death even mentions at the end that he had come to tear down an arrogant legend so it made sense that he wanted witnesses at the end.

Said it once and I'll say it again. I love that he was made so insanely intimidating and especially loved how the movie just kept dropping very subtle hints that he was Death before the big reveal. The first one was in the bar scene. Puss is by himself, he hears the whistle, looks back at the mirror, and sees Death sitting right next to him. But there were no doors opening, no footsteps, no nothing. Death appeared quite literally out of nowhere.

The part where no one sees him but Puss when Puss stole the map and escaped from Jack was chilling too. The taunt of putting the coins on his eyes as toll for the ferryman and pointing at Puss even means he's coming to kill him. Also, throughout their journey in the Dark Forest, the wolf was nowhere to be seen on the map, even though he was there, making you think that the wolf was all in Puss's head and a figment of his imagination. Until when the wolf appears in the same cave as the Puss was trapped in, that's when we know it was never a hallucination caused by fear, but he was quite literally there the whole time. And finding out that he is the Grim Reaper all along only made him all the more terrifying. Finally the last part, when the wolf makes a last appearance. At that time, we must remember the Star was levitating and a barrier that can disintegrate anyone was around the Star. Yet the wolf just walked through the barrier of the levitating Star in the air like it was nothing. Only to trap our main character in a flame barrier to prevent him from running away and receiving any form of help from his allies. Death is just straight up horror material right there. Last but not least, THAT WHISTLE. The whistle that announces his arrival. Like how heavy breathing announces the arrival of Darth Vader, and the death rattle/croaking sound Kayako from Ju-On (The Grudge) make. It is not even supposed to be scary if you listen to it carefully, it is akin to a serene lullaby. A very eerie lullaby, which is eerie due to how soothing it is. A lullaby to lull one to their eternal rest.

Also, the fact that anytime Death ever appears on screen, Hes never around for laughs or comedic effect. Hes taken seriously in EVERY SCENE. While other DreamWorks villains like Tai Lung & Shen will occasionally have a comedic moment with Po, Puss never makes a joke out of Death when he realizes how dangerous he is... because that's just it...Death isn't funny, it's not comedic or something you make a joke out of... its horrifying and it is the very thing every human being fears most...and therefore, we the audience will fear him most, more than anyone who came before or after...

Death is amazing, but also because of his Villain Archetype. He is quite literally a Force of Nature. Not only is he bound by his nature. Unable to change, the major characteristic that sets him up as a Force of Nature Antagonist is Inevitability and his place in the Narrative world. He is a constant, Immortal and unable to die. Even Puss says it himself, he can never defeat the Wolf, no matter how hard he tries, no matter how many tricks he could pull up, even after getting the edge on Death (cause Gatito blade kinda op), he knows what he just did was like a simple push back to the Wolf as evidence from the beginning of the final fight showing how much more capable he could have been as he was able to cast a wall of fire around Puss. He only appears to Puss thorought the movie until the end when he manifests himself to others at the Wishing Star. He appears during the giant fight watching and waiting for Puss to die by a bell falling on top of him. During the death montage with 8 cards you can see the Death Wolf in the corners of each card which is a way to say that he was there during all of his deaths. He didn't appear on the Dark Forest map like everyone else and entered the Wishing Star' field without a flinch meanwhile Jack's baker got completely disintegrated. Back at the bar before he appears the candle goes dark and then a glass appears on the counter before he manifests himself out of thin air to Puss, and you hear a bell. The animators and the voice actor just did an insane job at making his motions and expressions feel real. When he says "I find the very notion of NINE lives absurd", every word carried so much emotion and weight, you could feel the righteous fury of death, that has to look at a cat wasting 9 lives whereas others only get one. Since the director is one of the biggest fans of Sergio Leone's trilogy I think this villain is inspired by Angel Eyes portrayed by Lee Van Cleef, an amazing actor. The 2 sequences where Lee raises the tension with his victims is very similar, you feel in real danger, you feel you'll die. In the Italian version Angel Eyes was called "Sentenza", because being hunt by him was equal to a verdict of "death". All this movie is a big tribute to the good the bad and the ugly and the famous whistle of Morricone.

Honestly, the thing I love about Death is that the more I think about him, the more I see how from his very first seconds (and a bit before), you know he's not a normal person and you know he's dangerous. He appears after a candle goes out (can indicate wind from a movement yet we don't see anyone, like a ghost entered) and is first seen in the reflection of a mirror. And in that mirror, he takes up most of it and Puss is almost comically small next to him. Honestly, if I didn't have homework to do, I would go ahead and try to study his scenes because I need to. I also hope movies keep using music/sound cue to announce villains, I loved it in Spider-Verse and The Prowler and I love it with Death. I love it when the protagonist is hunted for sport and the only warning they have is a little music that tells them to run

Something about the village escape scene caught me. The way he stands there not doing anything, whistling, and Puss still afraid and runs away from him shows that he's not just a tough guy that Puss couldn't defeat. It gives the sensation that he can't be defeated, he gives the idea that fear is the only natural response for his presence. I think that his character writing was just perfect! What make this character so scary it's not the he is "force of nature" nor the fact he is Death. He is scary because he's a person that doesn't look like a human: his walk, his eyes, clothes, the aura around him, the way he talks, etcetera. He kinda reminds me of Antony Chigurh from No Country For Old Men.

I had thought that The 'big bad wolf' we saw in the Shrek series was THE Wolf from like, all fairytales revolving around/involving wolves, but maybe he was ONLY the one from the 3 little pigs and just happened to like dressing up in Granny-clothes cause if I recall, someone said that little red mentioned the wolf from HER fairytale (yes, in the shrek universe specifically) describing him the way Death looks to be, so maybe there's a different wolf for every story that includes a wolf in it- except for the ones where it describes them like Death-Wolf here.

He is such a good antagonist in this movie. Most people fear death, but eventually come to respect it in the end. I can't even begin to describe how powerful the emotional aspects of this movie were without going into spoilers but regardless... His eyes are the scariest part of him to me. They remind me of Billy the Puppet from SAW. They contrast with his overall color scheme so well you really can't take your own eyes off of him once he's on screen. He's a striking imposing figure that is so frightening that when you see him, you know you're gonna die. Because he IS death itself. Its practically like a game to him almost. Any time you remind the audience of the proxy of one of the scariest horror movie villains of all time, that being the Jigsaw Killer, you KNOW you've got a really terrifying villain on your hands.

I don't think we, as the audience, have given enough credit to the Wolf. He's not just a villain. That part is taken more by Goldie and Big Jack. The Wolf is Death. The balance to and natural turn of Life. As stated by the video, it's what he was created for. In spite of the chip on his shoulder it was Death that taught Puss to appreciate the Life he had.

I LOVED Deaths design. I thought at first that the wolf taking off the hood would make him less mysterious as I see death as a more spirit-like being. But they made Death AMAZING. Death iwn't supposed to be kind or give second chances. Death is sarcastic, pure evil and that's just his job. He is terrifying and just like Jack Horner, dead inside. He has no real motive to kill Puss rather than to get another annoying job done. And THAT makes him scary. The fact that this is just another tuesday with some extra spice because this cat has been escaping death so many times. It makes him _the_ death. Death with personality.
@divinedemigod777

Idont think its that Death is quite literally dead inside because although he never feels remorse or even forgiveness, he does understand that Puss in Boots changed by the end of the movie, and leaves him be to “live his life” now that he got Puss to rethink his way of living and get rid of that ego that he had where he thought he was invisible. A dead inside character would have killed no matter what, but he let him live once his point was proven and he had changed Puss.

I think he's pretty cool. Like, as someone who's close with death and has accepted it after having near panic attacks at the sheer thought of it, the way he was portrayed and how he affected Puss hit home. The haunting whistle can be both haunting and somewhat soothing I think, depending on if someone has accepted it or not. And that showed in Puss so well. He kept running from it until he accepted it and his one life. The wolf was a force of nature, no end goal, just annoyed at Puss for mocking death and wasting his lives, and I think that was really awesome, and in a way taught both Puss and the audience a valuable lesson on life. The design of the wolf, his mannerisms, and his skill with the sickles was amazing to witness, and it created a character I absolutely loved. And as someone who always liked Puss, it was nice to see this side of him and actual growth for him in this way. Such an amazing experience.

Deaths opening scene was flawless. The opening of the movie pointed out that puss had never been touched by a blade, and yet here he is bleeding from a random stranger. The whistle combined with the overwhelming strength set him up with genuine fear. There isn’t a better villain in dreamworks because they’re too afraid to make their protagonists weak, or much rather, their antagonists too strong. In this movie puss is never weak and death is even stronger. It’s an unmovable object met with an unstoppable force. It’s why the climax works the best.

One of my favorite ways to give a character a powerful impression is to let them have the same impression on another character, especially when said impression makes the other character act unusual. Death is the perfect foil to Puss. He gets away with besting Puss because his list of successful kills is Population: Everyone. He gets away with lecturing because he has a very personal beef with the way Puss treats the concept of life. Death has earned everything he says and does in the entire movie. He is not an axiomatic evil that Puss needs to prove wrong. He's a consequence Puss must atone for. He must fight to keep his life - prove that he is *willing* to fight for his life. Prove that he understands its value.

One interesting thing about death is that technically, he's not actually a villian. Just an antagonist. He really skits the line, especially since he did want to kill Puss (and probably would have if Puss didn't evolve). But he also makes a lot of sense, and his judgement is fair. He never does anything actually evil, outside of what he does to Puss. Like if he was a true villain he might threaten his friends, or get involved in the fight, or Puss' reputation or any other sort of thing. But nah, he is ONLY there to receive Puss himself for all the disrespect he received. And when Puss faced him down and proved he took his last life seriously, he chose to back down. That last part is important because he could have kept fighting. A story could have been made where the wishing star could have been used to seal death away until Puss' natural time was up. Or that he was somehow defeated in combat and had to retreat. But nah he sticks by his own code and leaves on his own terms once they are met, no threats or harm made to anyone else, and a grudging respect made between his previous prey turned foe. This is what keeps him out of true villainy (to me). He looks and acts like one, he's scarier than one and challenges the hero like one, but in the end he keeps to an antagonist roll.

What I really like about Death is that he could have claimed Puss any time he wanted but what he wanted more was to absolutely destroy who he once was by demolishing any form of confidence he had left and force him to live out his last few days in total fear of Death while also making Puss grow even further apart from his friends as he tried to run from Death. Overall, Death had way too much fun tormenting Puss in every way possible. Hence, his frustration when he says “Why did I have to play with my food?”
