You didn't say why it sucks. You only said you didn't like it.

It's a Vietnam variation of Best Years of Our Lives. It's not really about the war, but how the aftermath affected the town and its people. Cimino was a stylist but also captured American folklore and rituals. At his best he was as good as Ford, Capra, Spielberg and Scorsese.
@MrCarpen7er3 күн бұрын
Spielberg has nothing to do with Cimino. Bogdanovich and Friedkin do.

If I were the type of movie goer that thought all movies should make you feel good and warm and fuzzy inside.....I would also think the Deer Hunter really sucked. A more sophisticated thought process can appreciate when a writer or director is trying to provoke an uncomortable emotional response from an audience. The film did not win awards for making people feel good.

Most people of today certainly wouldn’t like this movie. It’s a product of a bygone generation. But you have to look at it from the perspective of it being released in the 70’s. Many people back then would talk about this movie after they seen it. It really resonated with people and stuck with them long after watching it. I recently rewatched it and now that I am much older, I thought it dragged on and on for no reason, especially the wedding scene. I wouldn’t say I loved this movie, but it didn’t suck for its time.
@VaughnJogVlogКүн бұрын
I think there are movies that didn’t quite know their genre. So we have a Vietnam war movie that didn’t quite do it right in a similar way there were proto-action movies that only knew mysteries and dramas so didn’t quite become fully realized, or horror attempts. in the ‘60s that couldn’t grasp a slasher.
@MrCarpen7er3 күн бұрын
Cimino always said that The Deer Hunter is not about the war. And if you watch the movie, it´s pretty evident.

I never like this movie because of the russian roulette thing. It's like they wanted to make a comment about PTSD, but they couldn't do it without making it farcical.
@VaughnJogVlog29 күн бұрын
It’s as if the approach is supposed to be that we the audience wouldn’t understand because we haven’t been through it. Fair enough, but Nick is a survivor who has it together then simply decides to become a heroin addict Russian Roulette player. It’s not set up, just a switch is flipped and we’re supposed to buy this radical change of character. If the film started with them in the prison camp and introduced the game, and had one guy outlasting his friends, okay now weren’t going somewhere.
@Archimedes61627 күн бұрын
Wasn't the Russian roulette business from a story set in the US that was grafted into the Deer Hunter storyline?
