I just purchased this printer. My Epson Stylus 3800 finally gave up the ghost after 16 years of exquisite printing. I'm a casual photographer, a designer, an architect and artist, so I use the printer to print architectural drawings at C-size (17x22), renderings, photos from my cell and DSLR and hand drawn sketches. For me this printer and what Epson offers suits my needs very well. I've used other brands but the versatility and amazing quality of prints is unmatched in my opinion. Also I keep a digital library of images but the primary purpose of my library is to allow me to select which images to print and printing with the P900 is truly a joy! Thanks for the video!
@ddsdss2562 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Both on the print being an integral part of the photographic process (or else you're a "digital artist" who will miss the joy of seeing their work in physical form) and the P900 absolutely rocking! Excellent prints for the most part so far, but my big challenge now is determining which core papers to use. My go-to for most prints so far has been Ultra Premium Luster (very versatile with great colors/blacks) but of course different papers best suit different images. I have about 50 paper samples (I know--way too many) and I want to get down to about 4-5 papers. In addition to UPL, I want a metallic (Epson Metallic Luster has been working well so far), a matte cotton/rag for more "painterly" images (maybe Legacy Fibre?), and most of all a baryta (too bad Epson apparently no longer sells Legacy Baryta), as that delivers stunning images (that rival silver-gelatin prints for B&W). At this point, it would seem that I "simply" need to compare prints using a test image and the ICC profiles provided by the contenders (Canson, Hahnemühle, Moab, Red River, and of course Epson) but that seems a daunting task (and there has to be more to it). I'll bet it will be difficult to tell some of these apart (it's even possible that some are actually the same paper, rebranded, or at least share characteristics) and most of them will probably be suitable, but I want the print to look like what I had in mind when I decided to trip the shutter, and that's going to take some experimentation to see what works. What you see onscreen isn't necessarily what comes out of the printer (even with a calibrated monitor and DxO software plus Epson Print Layout). It's a process...

I was just having this conversation with my partner last night about what is the point to print images nowadays! And I so much agree with you! It's hard to describe but it might be that extra mix of senses a print has, the touching, feeling the texture, perceiving it from different angles, different lights and it kind of gives the attention it really deserves.
@chris-orwig3 жыл бұрын
so well said. i completely agree. love how you put that..... the touch, feel, texture, different light... almost like it comes alive in a more personal way.

Hi Chris - great video on the Epson P900. Was wondering after 2 years has passed, could you do another post-purchase review; I also have a concern about cleaning frequency. Since each print is different in terms of amounts of ink used, what has been your experience about cleaning the print heads to maintain crispness in the prints? Thanks so much, and. best to you in your endeavors!

I just bought this printer yesterday. The only thing it gulps ink when installing the primary setup cartridges. Ink levels dropped to about 1/3 , so only about 18 ml's left over to print. It almost immediately forces you to buy new cartridges, but I am going to use refillables/resetter and Inktec Powerchrome K3 ink combined with orginal Epson PK and MB ink. It prints perfectly on canvas rolls too, but be careful: the roll weight is important (not to heavy), otherwise the roll is not fed well into the printer, so I have to remove 1/3 of the roll in order to make roll lighter and the canvas is fed into the printer without any problem.

Don't know if you're going to see this Chris, as I'm a bit late to the party, but I have a question: how many prints can I expect from new cartridges in a P900 (which I'm planning to purchase to print my digital projects and sell them), for instance @85% coverage on an 11x17 dimension? Ballpark figure, in your experience...? I have to be able to calculate the cost of replacements in the price of my projects, so this is why I'm asking. By the way, damn are you ever talented. Those pics in your intro are fabulous. Your enthusiasm is also contagious. And I'm not just saying that to get an answer :). Thanks in advance and the very best to you!

When I bought this printer, I automatically bought a second set of cartridges. This should be standard practice with A2 size printers. The priming of the ink pathway is a vital part of the set up. I added the cost of the extra set as part of the original purchase price. I also regard the value of the feedback printing provides as one of the main things that makes doing your own printing worthwhile.

I cleaned the heads often but every time I did, it wasted so much ink.

Great Work Chris, I desperately need your expertise before I commit to purchasing my Epson P900. So, I plan on producing 17"x48" color prints on .03mm Styrene Sheets. Styrene is used often for UV digital printing, but I don't have over $10K for a decent UV printer. Therefore, the P900 looks like a great choice for me. So, I have tested the P900's UltraChrome PRO10 Ink on my styrene sheets. I did a test by dripping droplets of this ink onto the styrene sheets (just to see if this styrene can absorb the ink successfully) . . . Upon dripping the ink, I took a paper towel and smeared the ink in various directions on the sheet. After 24 hours, the ink was "dry enough" and did absorb. However, when I took another paper towel and rubbed the color back and forth, there was a bit of color that transferred to the paper towel. . I solved this problem by spraying a protective clear coat over the ink and styrene sheet. It no longer smeared. Now for my question and concern "When you print from the P900, does any part of the print head, nozzles, rollers or those spikey wheels that assist the papers movement come in contact with the actual Ink on the artwork? My goal is to print out my 17"x48" artwork on styrene sheets without the ink being touched during the printing process; so as to let the unsmeared ink dry. Obviously, if I used a Certified Epson Media Paper, I would not be asking you this question because this Ink dries quickly on proper paper. But "I HAVE TO" use Styrene in this case. Sounds weird I know. But if I could get your insight on this question, it would mean a lot to me. Note: The finished pieces I produce will all have 2-3inch margins around it, So I am not printing borderless. THANKS, Andy

My sincere thanks for this well-produced and extremely informative video. It does answer a lot of questions and gives many useful tips. I have the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, the Surecolor P800, and now the Surecolor P900. I have 2 questions I would like to pose. I successfully installed the p900 on 2 computers. No problem. However, I noticed in the setup that there were no directions to set the printer to the network. The first Epson representative that I spoke to said that that is done automatically as the driver is being installed. So…how does the software recognize the printer if it has not been already connectef to the network? (To be fair, I will admit that I did connect the printer to the network before installing the software.) The Epson representative told me that I did not have to do that. The next day I spoke to another Epson representative. This representative told me that I did have to connect the printer to the network before installing the software. Frustrating, 2 different statements from 2 Epson representatives. If I am printing from Microsoft Word, the 3880 and the P800 default to Glossy paper unless I change it. An Epson representative told me a few years ago that Glossy is the default. The representative whom I spoke to today denied that there is a default. Do you know what the situation would be with the p900? I thank you very much for whatever information you can give me.

Question for you… in the video, you mentioned that it only supports 17by22 as the maximum paper size. Red River Paper offers paper in 17by25. The Canon Pro-1000 allows printing on this paper size. The reason I ask is that a full sensor aspect ratio of 3by2 scales beautifully to that size paper allowing 24by16 prints.

Excellent review! I'm just worried because the ink is VERY expensive, and the original from Epson says in the specifications that it is only valid for 6 months after opening. I'm not going to print on a large scale, it would be economically unfeasible to make the complete switch during this period. Do you know if you can use it for longer without problems? @jpdj271518 күн бұрын
If you print on serious photographic inkjet printing papers, you will always have ICC-profile information on the paper. You have to set that for the paper in your printer setup. If you use an application that allows previewing the image as to be printed on your monitor, then it will have to apply the ICC profile too. The monitor can be calibrated with a simple calibration consumer device from Calibrite (used to be X-rite). You can shoot reference shots of a Color Checker Passport (CCP) and in that way set your images WB and tint right. If you don;t want to buy a calibration device, but have an office app like PowerPoint, then create a reference test chart with different grey values. If you create boxes that you fill with black [RGB=0,0,0] through white [RGB=255,255,255] then you should not lose detail (difference) between the white and a slightly darker grey patch that is almost white. At the other end you should not lose the difference between black and almost black. These grey nuances help you set the monitor and software to neutral. The problem here is that a monitor being "off" needs to be resolved and the theoretical grey scales help you get the monitor adjusted for the grey scale in brightness, contrast, WB and tint. So these grey scales need to look good from PowerPoint, from Lightroom, from Photoshop, or a free image viewer or web browser. That's you monitor set and done. If you shot the CCP reference images, then you can tell Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) that IS the Develop tab in Lightroom Classic (LrC) what is neutral grey by selecting the eye dropper and with that clicking on the grey patch. Here you can adjust the rendering of the image, not the monitor that should be fine now. The unknown now is the printer and its inks. For printing, start printing sRGB images. Then try Adobe RGB. If you want to try ProPhoto, you may get disappointed, so read up first, test print at smaller formats, and be prepared to learn that Profoto is too large for your kit. As you cannot get bad prints now, you still need to make reference prints. Start with smaller images, potentially printing a segment of a larger image where you have tints that are very important to you. Try very smooth matte paper as well as glossy baryta paper. Both reveal detail. The matte is more suitable for lower contrast romantic soft tones images. The baryta is ideal for bigger contrasts. In both cases, you will not lose detail in paper structure.

Hello, I watched your video with great interest. I am also considering buying an Epson SC P900. Before I do that I am making an estimate of how much ink this printer uses per A2 + print. Do you have any insight into these ink costs?
@chris-orwig3 жыл бұрын
Hey hans, it varies pretty wildly depending on where you live. Best to check with your local suppliers 🤙
@TanyaOwens2 жыл бұрын
@@chris-orwig I think he means how much ink is used per print. In some of the large format commercial Epson printers in the software it actually calculates the ink usage down to the cost. It helps the photographer then price the prints they sale to recoup costs and make a profit.

I've been looking into getting the Epson Surecolor P900 printer for myself. Enjoyed your enthusiastic review by the way. (Made me want this printer even more) They're rather not available anywhere right now. So I'm continuing to educate myself further in the meantime. I saw that a set of high capacity replacement cartridges look to be about $1,600. or so . . . more than the printer itself. I was wondering if you know about how many prints one can expect from a set of cartridges? I know of course that this depends on the sizes you print and the density of the prints and so forth . . . but any sense of what it's costing you per print to make? Say perhaps how many 17" x 22" prints it might do? Also, I'm very interested in printing to rolled canvas, Any experience with this and where the best place to buy paper and canvas on a roll is? Thanks in advance. BJ Nartker

AFAIK there is only the 1 size ink, 50ml 10x $42 is $420 for a set (and most places are on backorder for many if not all carts.)

@rogerlove75883 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, but I wouldn’t suggest using this printer (or any high end photo printer) for document printing unless it’s the only option. There are many much less expensive document printers available that are designed to print Word docs.

Is it true that you have to print at least one photo a week to don't break the printer (epson, canon or other...)??

There is another reviewer that recommends at least running a nozzle check once a week if the printer is not being used.

I just bought this printer a month ago and I discovered something reaally annoying and quite upsetting: even if you do NOT printer borderless, the printer tends to dump ink on certain positions in the overspray sponge (you can see clearly dark ink lines: use a q-tip to see how much ink is dumped....terrible). Now the P900 overspray sponge is a seperate entitiy and not linked with the waste ink tank, unlike the P800, where the overspray sponge is attached to a small canal that has a slight slope towards the waste ink tank: so any ink dropped onto this the ink will drop onto the waste ink tank on the right lower part of the printer. The P900 overspray sponge does not: So instead of moving the print head all the way to the right side to dump the ink of intermediate cleaning cycles it tends to dump it on the overspray sponge too. Now those who do not want to have their overspray sponge to be soaked with ink and deliberately choose NOT to printer borderless will be deceived. I am in contact now with several people around the world to address this thing (planned obsolescence) to force Epson to issue a new firmware where the print head moves completely to the capping station where it can dump its ink during (intermediate) cleaning cycles, so the ink can be sucked into the waste ink tank and let the overspray sponge to be immaculate as possible. I have contacted Epson recently and I hope to get an answer about this.

This is a really good printer kzbin.infoUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 . The reason I gave 4 stars for tech support (which I don't think this would classify as tech support) is because once you turn the printer on, it does require a little bit of start up time which may bother some who are in a hurry to quickly print something. To offset that though the printer prints very quickly. I would definitely purchase this printer again.

The P900 that I bought 5 days ago has once again ate expensive third party 330 gsm Fine Art Paper. According to Epson, the P900 is designed and built to print on Epson brand paper only! So that makes the several hundred dollars worth of non Epson paper that I purchased a month ago from B&H in New York City effectively worthless. You may want to edit your video to include this information from Epson re: third party paper.

@michaelricco813 жыл бұрын
@@stanmorgan4628 Why does Red River disagree with me? 4 Epson techies in California all told me that the Epson printer is NOT designed for third party paper. In fact, it was their recommendation that I either switch to ONLY using Epsor paper or return the printer. I will say that the Epson techies and all Epson employees that I interacted with were quite nice and sympathetic to my issues. However, they were adamant that my use of third party paper was the cause of my issues. To prove their point - on two separate occasions they sent me Epson paper at their expense.

That paper is 19 mils and says 314 gsm. that doesn't match or there is no industry standard for paper. 19 mils should be over 400gsm which can't be run from the top. it's to thick to bend so the front load would be correct.
