Unless you're the director, horror usually leads to more horror. Which she did in things like "Don't Breathe". At the time she was the biggest name in the movie since she was on cult hit "Suburgatory". It's not like she disappeared though. She just finished the run in "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" which was really well liked and she got some award nominations for that so she's still doing good work.

@@mezzb nah, the original evil dead movie knew how to have fun. The first deadite dying is one of the funniest things of all time. This is just a stereotypical mid 2010s horror movie that's undeserving of the evil dead name.

I know a lot of people were taken aback by the more serious tone, but I personally think it works. The more grounded characters and atmosphere really adds to the brutal, uncomfortable nature the series always had. It's also a neat contrast to Ash vs Evil Dead, which has more of the insane, goofy stuff fans want to see.

I would argue its what actually made Evil Dead unique and not just another horror shlock. When I saw this movie it was so by the books. It was just another hardcore horror film to be forgotten. I cant recall even one scene from that movie, not a one. Evil Dead (1981) and Evil Dead 2, hell even Evil Dead 3 (Army of Darkness) on the other hand has so many scenes that I could recall. Alot of them ended up being memes. Thats how great they were. I guarantee you that if you asked a horror fan about this remake they would have forgotten it even existed.

So the ending with Mia seemingly being posessed I read as Mia being changed in the same way Ash was. Yes she's no longer prisoner to the forces that aided in losing her friends and family, but she has been so fundamentally changed that she isn't Mia anymore, at least mot the Mia we saw in the beginning just like Ash.

When this movie first came out, some people were bashing on it for being so different from the original*, I also had plenty of late 2000's horror remakes fresh in my mind like The Thing 2011, Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th so I simply wrote it off and didn't see it until a year or so later when the discussion surrounding this movie changed to being insanely positive. *At the time I frequented a very small circle of people with... Questionable opinions, to say the least. Even my mental health improved significantly by leaving and ignoring those people. I saw it and I never expected this movie to be so damn good! I was absolutely blown away for the minimal usage of CGI and how batshit crazy it was despite the gritty and serious tone of it. Ryan is not exaggerating by saying that he can't show a single thing from the ending, because there is a literal rain of blood. I need to rewatch this movie sometime soon, I love it!

Just watched Evil Dead Rise and while I did like it, I prefer the 2013 movie. I feel like "Rise" was held back by having children centered as the ones dealing with the demon. Throughout the entire movie I already knew nothing was going to happen to the youngest daughter because-of course, right? 2013 also has better scares and kills in my opinion.
@randomfools808
@randomfools808 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Same. Plus the trailers showed her escaping with the daughter so I knew nothing would happen. I don't think it went far enough. Mia got stabbed multiple times and had to lose her hand in that final epic fight in the blood rain. The finale in Rise was fun but the music was nowhere near as epic and it didn't feel like she went through as much. The most brutal scenes happened after they were already possessed.

I have always thought messing with the book caused time riffs and dimension jumping before the Ash vs. Evil Dead show. Once that series came, I am convinced that all it is since they pretty much did that in the show. I wish there was a line in the original or in anything that had them talk about deja vu. My opinion, but this is how they are all connected.

Evil Dead (2013) I would consider to be one of the best horror movies in recent years. It is legitimately terrifying and is a horror film that also tries to be a good movie while also being incredibly violent. Usually I’m not a fan of excessively violent horror films because the crew of such films don’t usually put as much effort into the rest of the movie as they do the gore. This one however I feels gives us it’s all on each and every front.

I always thought the post credit scene was just a cheeky joke. She’s losing blood and is unconscious, but wakes up to spooky music and then literally nothing happens. That’s the punchline. It’s still a happy ending and I like it.

At the age of 12/13, me and my brother would be picked up by our cousin and would sit at our grandma’s house until our dad would pick us up. She would rent from the nearest Ralph’s Redbox machine. This is how I watched a lot of the paranormal activity’s, sinister, strangers, and a large amount of parody horror. Among the list was Evil Dead 2013. It was the first film that I turned to her and asked “should I be watching this”. As the scene where Mia is violated by the forest was something I haven’t seen in horror at the time. I had a slight interest in horror, but making it through the Evil Dead reboot, remake, sequel really dragged me into the space of horror. It made me a huge fan of the evil dead franchise but I kind of kickstarted my appreciate for old horror as well. Going back to watch the original evil dead films as well as ones that were out of the way. As Halloween and other more mainstream films I have seen. It is very funny to read the comments and see people, who at the same age, experienced this film and it’s gruesome disgusting shock value. Til this day, I still recommend the film to anyone who ask about what the goriest movie is or what not so typical horror films are out their. As it is remembered for its brutality and creative vision. Being instantly rewatchable due to its violence and simplistic story. Which allow it to have a snappy runtime and pacing. It is also nice to say that the recent Evil Dead Rise has lived up to the hype. Providing more brutality, at a lesser level, but bringing a more narrative focused story. Both fitting within the perspective of real life problems. As 2013 focused on drug addiction being the mirror for Mia’s possession, while Evil Dead Rise mirrors the fear of motherhood and child bearing. I’m am so happy that this franchise continue to pour its best into every installment and remain consistent in terms of quality and horror.

I love how most of the film encapsulates The Evil Dead, but the final act it's such a homage to the sequels. Yeah, the monster being a double isn't that scary, but being a reference to Ash vs Evil Ash? And giving us the chance of seeing the hand-cutting and the chainsaw? I just love how it embraces all of the over the top stuff of the series via references while keeping it's scary tone.

I love how this coexists with the original trilogy, and how Evil Dead Rise further strengthened that my theory was correct . This is a different cabin, and that’s a different book, but it serves the same cause and is only one of three books of the dead.(OG Trilogy book, 2013 book, and ED Rise book). I love this franchise, and I can’t wait to see where it’s going

I completely agree with you. This version stuck with me so much, and I never really forgot it. The scene of the brother burying Mia alive and trying to resuscitate her made me tear up at the cinema, and I think it's primarily Jane's acting that did it for me. She made Mia a character that I cared about and wanted to see defeat the demons. I did like the OG too, but the first movie had little to no backgrounds for the characters, so it wasn't the same for me. Besides, as you have said, the 2013 version takes itself more seriously and focuses on more serious themes (drug addiction/ siblings estrangement), which were incorporated well within the horror. I believe the two movies are different and should be enjoyed in their own right.

i think the interesting thing about the demon manipulating David is that like. it's right? she shouldnt be in an isolated cabin with no easy medical care beyond a nurse while going thru withdrawal. withdrawal kills. the evil is definitely easily read as a metaphor for addiction, but Mia's friends are pretty realistic in how they treat her. instead of putting her in a hospital where she can go through withdrawal safely, they put her in direct danger and refuse to really listen to her. i love this movie sm

Watched this back at release in the cinema and loved it. Just rewatched it on NowTV and it feels like a slightly different cut. For one, David is NOT shown as possessed moments before the cabin explodes. Second, there's a very explicit scene where Eric shows David pages from the book that state a soul can be purified if the body is dismembered, burned, or buried alive. So it's not just David thinking he's found a loophole. It also leads to an extra gag in the shed where he looks like he's reaching for the chainsaw before getting the car battery and you think he's going to try dismemberment. Anyway, off to see Rise in a couple of hours!

Speaking to continuity, Rise confirms there’s three books and seems to imply that the one in 2013 is the second. How it got there is unknown but every official source I’ve seen does place 2013 in canon. To which (after hearing the problems you pointed out) I have to respond with my usual comment about Evil Dead continuity. “The second contradicted the first, the third contradicted the second. Don’t think too hard about it, it just works.”

The problem with the movie for me was that the film starts off with tons of exposition drops, which cements the backstory as a kind of background noise. But then later when that backstory crops back up in the main story, the story treats it like the culmination of the whole movie instead of simply the culmination of the infodumps at the beginning. It didnt help that much of the exposition deliveries felt on-the-nose without much if any meaningful subtext. But i will say this movie had and still has the coolest demon eyes ive ever seen in a movie.

As someone who grew up and was a teenager during the "torture p0rn" era the Evil Dead remake is what I consider the peak of that, bringing the gritty violence, practical SFX and decent character development and writing to create something that is still mind numbingly gruesome but is always resonant in my heart. I was very messed up mentally at the time and it was encouraging to say the least to see someone like Mia suffer and survive after being subjected to so much in such a short frame of time.

Honestly, the remake was not very good. The writing was awful which made the characters unlikeable in stark contrast to the original movies. The cinematography and effects were fine but the story & twist was very predictable once you realized they were just making a standard 2010s-era horror movie full of tropes and a standard issue last girl scenario. If it had better writing & characters and was made as a standalone film with an evil dead theme rather than a remake then it would have been far better. But as it stands the "mixed or average reviews" assessment is fairly accurate IMO.

The best remake I've ever seen. It switched around the end protagonist perfectly and added enough grit and gloss to make it pretty much its own original film minus the bones of the plot. The brutality of possessed Mia, cutting her tongue and frenching that chick, telling her not to cut her arm off while peeking out from the cellar (the extended edition puts in the "not another peep," desire tune lol). I wish we could've followed Mia in a sequel; rehab for her lost arm and the deadites raising hell in a psych ward or somewhere else. The cops could've brought the Necronomicon to the hospital to ask Mia what it was and what happened at the cabin and she could freak out seeing the book again before a dumb ass doctor reads it lol It would put Mia in her Mom's shoes.

The remake was incredible. Had I not spent my initial watch constantly searching for Easter eggs and comparisons, it would have been the scariest movie I had ever seen. Not many movies depict evil well, but this one did. Great directing, amazing acting, and the sound engineering was incredible. That being said… go watch the new one! Evil dead rise is a more than worthy successor. The mother in the movie gave one of the best performances I’ve ever seen on film. Absolutely terrifying, and the audio engineers went above and beyond to make the audience UNCOMFORTABLE. I think the Evil Dead franchise is the strongest horror movie franchise out there.

Nah, that ending when u think it's over and suddenly starts raining blood and the demon grabs her and chases her was scary.

This was one remake I really enjoyed. I'll admit that I saw the original trilogy in reverse as "Army of Darkness" was one of my dad's favorite films but he'd never seen the other two so I didn't see The Wvil Dead 1 and 2 until college and I loved them. I definitely appreciated the practical effects in the remake because that's one of my favorite parts of any horror film. I love seeing loads of gore but CGI just takes me right out of a film.

From someone who loves the whole "Evil Dead" trilogy, I thought it was fantastic!😱😱😱 I was pretty young when the 1st one came out but it s always been one of my fave horror movies. If I'm remembering correctly, the original wasn't very campy like the rest. So I think they did it justice. You don't wanna see a shot for shot or word for word remake but you still want it to make sense. There's a really fine line & I think they straddled that line perfectly

You ignore some things we know like that there are 3 books. You have the necronomicon ex mortis from 1/2 and AoD, then the book from this movie, and finally the third in Rise. The three books is set up in AoD

I haven't seen this movie since it was in theaters. At that point I may have seen Army of Darkness but not the original Evil Dead. I really liked the 2013 movie and I was NOT prepared for the twists and the ending which made everything a lot more exciting and fun. I'll have to go rewatch it now.

I believe the narrator referred to the Necronomicon as the “Naturon Demonto” which is the name used in the 2013 film.

Dude, Evil Dead Rise was awesome! Well worth the price for admission. The only problem was that my brother got freaked out after the elevator scene so I had to leave early. More than likely going back next week though

I feel like most complaints I hear from this are comparing it to Evil Dead 2. Evil Dead 2 is my favorite of the series but I also know that the original was a basic story to hang insanely violent and gory ornaments from. As you said, the sequel embraced the unintended goofiness of the first film. I like the pacing and tension as well as the over-the-top gore. I enjoy the movie for what it is and it's a good watch around Halloween.

I was always surprised this movie doesn't get more love. I've seen it about a dozen times and it hits all the right beats for me. I'm not sure what to think going into Evil Dead Rises. I feel like including kids just allows the film makers to take some cheap horror shots.

This movie straight up traumatized me as a kid. I was like 10ish and was at a cousin’s birthday party and they had the tv on and this was the movie that happened to be playing lol. The arm ripping scene from the ending and knife licking was probably the first time I ever saw gore and violence of that nature in my life and it’s never really left my mind. Funny how this movie went from terrifying me to now being one of my faves 🫣. Guess the bloodiness of the movie started and cemented my love for all things horror 💃🏽

Would you be willing to explore the Thing prequel at some point? I feel like it was a great concept with lackluster execution and producer intervention and it may be neat to look into ;0

Gore in movies has never bothered me but I watched this movie while pregnant. The scene where the woman slices her jaw open with glass had me gagging. I had to leave the room and get water. My husband tried to turn the movie off, but at that point I had vendetta against it for making me have such a reaction. It's held a special place in my heart ever since.

In response to how Fede Alvarez stated that Evil Dead is a requal, I like Lee Cronin's response saying that there are three different versions of the Necronomicon, all being established in Army of Darkness. The first from the Original Trilogy and the show, the second from the 2013 movie , and the third in Evil Dead Rise. As to the books looking different from movie to movie, it's established in the first season of the show that the Necronomicon can be defased. Doesn't fix every plot hole, but the series never really cared about continuity.

Its shown in army of darkness that there was three books. So I'm guessing this one was the second and the one in evil dead rise was the third.
