The Tomcat could intercept multiple targets while the Eagle was still in development -- and hit them at far greater range. For its day, the Phoenix and AWG-9 were a potent combination. Of course, if you watch this video, you would think that the Phantom was an Air Force project and not the Navy's. The Phantom was NOT McNamara's idea of a joint service fighter, it was already a done deal before he reached office. McNamara's pet baby was the F-111, which did so poorly in carrier testing that they quickly sought a new design, the Tomcat.

The F-14 could only theoretically track and engage multiple targets. If those targets maneuvered at all the F-14 would lose track. it's good for the time but quickly obsolesced Radar multitrack was predicated on the target staying on the same vector. IE against Bear Bombers. All you had to do was change your course and the F-14 would have to actively find you again.
@kayakutah6 ай бұрын
I flew the F-14A off of the Enterprise for 2 cruises with VF-114. The AWG-9 would hold track with targets that maneuvered. It had a fairly slow update rate and a wide "notch" that had a negative impact on tracking through target maneuvers, but all pulse doppler (PD) radars of the time had the notch (including the -15), it was just a matter of degree. The only weapon that could be used against multiple targets at the time was the AIM-54 and it was quite capable of multiple shots on multiple targets with that system combo. Once launched, the AIM-54 no longer had some of those limitations, especially once it went active. The D models also had upgrades that solved the notch issue (I never flew the D, but fought them as an adversary in the f-16N). One of the loadouts we flew with was 2x2x2. 2 Phoenix, 2 sparrow, 2 sidewinder. Firing 2 Phoenix against 2 targets simultaneously was not a problem, and - though heavy! - that loadout was pretty nice to have. But you had to understand the capabilities and limitations of the weapons you used. To say, "The F-14 could only theoretically track and engage multiple targets. If those targets maneuvered at all the F-14 would lose track." is incorrect. To say the F-14 was unreliable is also incorrect. In the case of the Sparrow, we would generally fire it in "pulse", not PD. In that mode, it was very capable! And of course, the Sidewinder didn't require a lock at all (though having a lock could gain some serious advantages in application). For example, you could lock a SW seeker onto a target on the nose while having a radar lock on the wingman, shoot the head-on target and quickly go SEAM on the second target, getting two missiles in the air on two targets pre-merge. The Soviets were terrified of the F-14, but really, they also understood that western technology was running ahead of them across the spectrum. It's reasonable to critique the A model, just know what you're talking about!

the Mig-25 was designed to do 1 thing - Intercept the SR-71 and the XB-70 Valkyrie bomber (cancelled). It was a pure high speed interceptor. It is less than worthless in a dogfight. But it was the impetus for the F-15 to be developed.
@themanformerlyknownascomme7776 ай бұрын
I mean, it's not *totally* useless, hell, one actually managed to shoot down an F-18 once! and they also had a decent Kill record against Western Jets that were flown by Iran during the Iran-Iraq war.
@alexx86hater5 ай бұрын
It is a common misconception: interceptor variant wasn't designed to intercept XB-70 and SR-71 -- it flew less than 2 years after A-12, just few month after unveil of YF-12 and few months before XB-70 flew for the first time; and it is slower than either of those. Missile range was OK by the standards of the time, however wouldn't do much against those due to targeting system wouldn't be able to acquire those at acceptable range. In reality MiG-25 was designed to intercept B-58 and was a replacement for the Tu-128. To intercept high speed targets like SR-71 they developed MiG-31 with the radar that has nothing to do with Iranian F-14s and missiles that are definitely not a copy of AIM-54 (it's just pure coincidence that specs match). However even with that according to the MiG-31 pilots they had to know where SR-71 would be at specific time, then they would have to pop at a high speed to acquire SR-71 by the targeting systems for a few seconds that might be enough time (or not) to launch the missile. Also let's not forget that recon variant of MiG-25 was developed in parallel (which also contributed on why does it have such high speed) and almost immediately after start of the production there was an attack version of the MiG-25 developed. Btw, good chunk of Foxbat production were recon and attack versions. It's just US saw (and still sees) in MiG-25 what they wanted to see instead of what it really was.
@dinuxplay80035 ай бұрын
Yeah... Mig 25 was okay (had a few kills mainly against older F-5s though) but the West had inaccurate intelligence on the matter and kinda overestimated but at least that gave birth to the F-15 and more improved jets.

One of the things he was proud of was attending Top Gun as an AIC, while on the Nimitz. He was also very proud of the fact that he did the tasks that were assigned to him rather than just delegating that stuff to others. Of course he was expected to utilize the other sailors and he did utilize them, but he was there with them getting the work done. Apparently some of his peers didn't feel the need to even be present while their delegees were getting the work done... From 1970 through 2000 he saw and heard a lot of things, including 16 inch guns firing. A couple of his strongest memories were the sounds that the ship made while he was trying to sleep in rough seas. He said he really thought it might just break and half. Something else very memorable was arresting gear wires letting loose while under great tension...

Neat story: In 1973 or 74, a group from my USAF squadron of Douglas C-9 med-evac pilots arranged a tour of the McDonald Douglas F-15 plant at nearby St. Louis Lambert Field airport. I attended. As the tour among the airplane assembly hanger progressed, our guide told us that, as luck would have it, we could step over to the edge of the hanger and watch a (very early, perhaps the prototype) F-15 take off, as it began one of its test flights. The F-15 was painted sky blue all over, probably for sales reasons, to emphasize the aircraft's air superiority role to prospective buyers. Test flights are are almost always followed by a chase plane, and an F-4 with no ordinance would do the chasing here. The takeoff runway was very close to our hanger, and we had a great view. The two planes took off as a unit, together. For this takeoff, the two-ship flight had gotten ATC clearance to perform a "max performance climb," with departure in the direction opposite the way they took off. For this, the F-15 would climb straight up, and pull over at what looked to me to be about 14,000 feet. The F-4 began running out of energy halfway up, and had to turn, well to the side, with a plan to rendezvous with lead once things settled. The F-4 is no slouch, particularly with a light load, such as fuel for a single test sortie. But the F-15 made the Phantom look clunky and dated.

It wasn’t that it lacked the ability to track it was they didn’t have an advanced FF system so they had to visual ID targets so the over horizon targeting was nullified by too much friendly air traffic. Also, Top Gun doesn’t have a trophy or tournament.

The F-15SE wasn't stealthy. It had reduced signature compared to a regular F-15, making the SE more comparable to the F-16 on radar. It wasn't ordered because it was a private venture by Boeing that nobody asked for, and it offered no real advantages while being more expensive than a normal F-15.

I was golfing the South Course @ MacDill AFB in Florida in the mid 90s during an air show. I was teed up on a par 4 or 5 when I saw the shadow of a plane screaming toward us on the fairway. It then went vertical over our tee box. We looked up into the orange afterburners as the sound, heat and vibration was shocking. It knocked my ball off the tee. My opponent looked at me with a straight face and said, “ hitting 2”.😅

I love the F-15 Eagle. It's a childhood favorite of mine, but I also have lots of love for the F-4 Phantom. One of the most unique looking USA Warplanes ever. Our planes are the best, and it makes it hard to pick which is my ultimate favorite because I also admire the SR-22. I really wish though, that the US would have gone with the YF-23 because I belive that plane would have had more agility and speed advantages in the sky, along with the stealth.

Good video. However, You didn’t mention in your assessment of the MIG-25 that it was designed in response to North American X-70 to be an interceptor of what would have been the world’s fastest bomber. The Soviets built and flew the MIG -25 even before the XB-70 was retired in 1969, so by 1976 it was already 10 years or more years old. Their original purpose now removed, MIG-25 essentially was a solution looking for a problem. Its age has no effect on its agility, but a better comparison would probably be the F-104, also a fast interceptor with marginal maneuverability. It is also probably fair to mention the 104’s short comings in air superiority as another influence on F-15 design.

What's truly amazing is that no one has really matched the F15 to this day. Russia has the Su57, but not in serious numbers. China has the J20, but there are serious doubts about its actual capabilities. The US has two fighters that are better than this beast, and the Navy has one with similar capabilities. This plane left the world playing catchup for five decades, and they still haven't actually caught up!

MIG-31 was the first plane capable of targeting multiple targets at the same time 25 but earlier models I think 12 and was first with a phased array radar which made it possible. It could also communicate in a sorty to tell other planes in formation which formation is best. mIG-25 Holds the record to climb at 189.85s to 30,000M.

@super_slav914 ай бұрын
@@KarolusTemplareV F14 got it later with phased array (passive) radar post 1991. The MiG-31 was the world's first operational fighter/interceptor with a passive electronically scanned array and it can track up to 10 targets and simultaneously attack four of them with its Vympel R-33 later variants can engage 8 or more, lead aircrafts computer automatically sends the best form of confrontation to others in formation. you need a passive radar to engage multiple targets. Only later f14's had phased array around 1991 onward when america cought up in radar technology.

Nov. 21, 1973 , they tested the F-14A , firing 6 phoenix missiles at 6 different targets in the span of 38 seconds , in which the F-14 guided them with it's own radar simultaneously to the targets , with 4 hits, one target drone suffering a malfunction so it was a no-result, and one of the Phoenixes failing. Mind you, this was very early in the life of the jet, before tinkering out any issues preproduction aircraft have and nearly two years before the aircraft was fully introduced operationally. So the F-14 did it before even when the Mig-31 wasn't even flying, not even as a prototype.
@super_slav914 ай бұрын
@@KarolusTemplareV The radar was a first of it's kind in aviation due to it being the first time a PESA radar had been installed in a jet fighter, this was previously reserved for ground based systems and the B1 bomber, several mig-25 test beds were fitted with the Zaslon radar, in April 1972 a MiG-25RBS fitted with Zaslon and it's accompanying targeting computer Shot down 4 su-7 drones during a simulated intercept, 2 missiles were launched simultaneously followed by another 2 half a second later, the test was successful and the Zaslon was ready for the MIG-31 when it entered passed state trials this took another 3 years due to the radars power consumption. The Zaslon Radar was only available on the mig-31 interceptor as the technology was not approved for export. It was not until 1997 when the US had its first Phased Array Radar fitted to a fighter in the F-22 Raptor.

It is not just a battle against the forces we have in the air, but the entirety of logistics and systems that project this power as it moves forward. Then there is the intel. From the radars to the communications no other air force can match it.

The truth about Top Gun is every pilot in the Navy has to go through the school. How do I know this? I was in the Navy and worked on F-18’s and went to Top Gun for my squadron 3 times. Also the record speed of the foxbat was made during a dive, so imo that is not a record. Talking about the “dog fighting” of the f-15, Naval F-18 pilots constantly out fight them.
