Also worth noting that the F/A-18 Hornet was originally the YF-17 "Cobra" named for its pronounced leading-edge extensions (LEXs). The snake names basically also relate to the form of the LEXs.

Almost correct, the Viper name came up before the Falcon selection which was two years before BSG. Viper might have been popularized by BSG but it didn't come from it.

A combination of resembling a viper snake and resembling the Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica which aired at a similar time to its introduction. This ultimately would go full circle in the reimagined series where the Viper Mk. VII was given a design meant to resemble an F-16. The producer even said that those design features came from the F-16, thus completing the circle of life in both fiction and reality.

Fighting Falcon is USAF designation. Viper is what it was nicknamed by pilots internationally.

The story I heard is that it pilots/ground crew called it the viper after the fighter from Battlestar Galactica, which is on TV when the F-16 was entering service
