If Nintendo opted to have an option for the use of dual-layer Mini DVDs and doubled the average size to 3GB per disc while still keeping the small form factor for Gamecube discs, they could have prevented themselves from having a lot of problems. In reality, it was a perfect storm of circumstances outside of their own control that contributed greatly to outcomes that didn't favor them and their falling short during that generation wasn't due to a lack of effort.

I hate how every retrospective of the GameCube makes it seem like the game cube was far behind "the big two" which isn't the case at all. For much of that generation the game cube was ahead of the Xbox and the Xbox just barely squeaked by. The correct framing of things is not the ps2 + Xbox paired together with the GameCube far behind, but the ps2 way ahead and the GameCube + Xbox paid together.
@ChrisB-x1iАй бұрын
Lol. I think you're missing the point. Nintendo had been in first and second place for multiple generations. In only one generation, the newcomer, Microsoft, was still able to knock Nintendo back to third place. Has nothing to do with "barely squeaking by."

It bugs me that Nintendo and the Gamecube is often referred as having failed in the 5th generation of consoles when the Xbox only sold 3 million more units, which isn't much of a lead in the grand scheme of things, and generally seems to get the pass (if you want to talk about a real failure, look no further than Sega and the Dreamcast, which flopped so badly most people don't even remember it being in the same generation as PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube). In truth every other 5th generation console got completely dominated by the PS2, which sold more than all of them combined (almost twice as much as all of them combined, in fact), mostly thanks to being the cheapest DVD player on the market that could also play videogames.
@lenk8374Ай бұрын

For a newcomer at the time to come in and overtake/innovate with their first attempt more than the company that spent 10+ years being a household name is a pretty bad look for Nintendo, no matter what the sales numbers are.
@NomicFinАй бұрын
@@Goji2428 Sony did the same thing in the previous generation, so I expect Microsoft was hoping to repeat it. In fact, I feel the reason Microsoft got into the console market when it did was because in the previous console generation both of the companies that used to be the undisputed biggest names in the field (Nintendo and Sega) had done worse than expected and been outsold by a newcomer, so it must have looked like a good time to make their entrance in the console market.

@mortenpotzdidler2790Ай бұрын
Nintendo used to win by having, generally, the widest and best selection of third-party games. This was during the NES and SNES days; for instance, Street Fighter II was arguably the biggest game of the year on SNES in 1992, rather than a Nintendo-developed game. Nintendo lost its way with the N64, arguably because they not only had oppressive policies compared to Sony, but also because they stuck with carts (which, I concede, could be seen as an oppressive policy). The N64 did manage to carve out its own niche by being the place for party games and first-person shooters. This was a time when Nintendo of America was largely independent, and were allowed to make deals with Western publishers such as Acclaim and Williams for exclusive games; the GameCube became a machine that was dominated Iwata and crew out of Japan, which led to Nintendo's western support and identity from prior gens to largely disappear. The N64 was a decent success in the United States. The GameCube was a relative failure, losing in sales worldwide to Microsoft's first Xbox.
@777EliyahuАй бұрын
@ the carts were an oppressive policy because Nintendo exclusively controlled their manufacture and charged a premium for third parties to get their games published. I’m not exactly sure how Sony approached it, but CDs are much cheaper to make, thus creating a wider profit margin that third parties benefited from. It was a perfect storm that Sony exploited because third parties were already starting to show signs of rebellion during the 16bit era (EA manufacturing go their own carts on the Genesis, for example)

The real difference in the disc was not the physical format, but the data format. There were half sized burnable discs on the market at the time of the gamecubes release. The Gamecube used a proprietary data format which I think came to be know as DOL-006, while most burnt cds used ISO-9660. Standard optical drives would not be able to read the discs, and while a few could, there were hurdles. On top of that there was some kind of data protection, but I'm not familiar with that.

4:54 I don't know why but for some reason when I was a teenager in the early 2000s some of my friends really hated the GameCube controller. I don't know maybe because we were so used to the N64 controller but I mean I never had a problem with the GameCube controller and even when I was explaining the controller to my mom and trying to talk about how bad it was, my mom very clearly understood why it's a great controller when I describe how the a button which is the button you push the most is bigger than the rest of the buttons. And she doesn't even play video games she just knew how obvious that was and then I remembered that and still know how obvious it is. I shouldn't have let my friends influence my opinion at the time. One of them isn't even my friend anymore. He was the one who was primarily complaining about the controller anyways. I don't know maybe he just much preferred PlayStation controllers even though we played a lot of Nintendo together whether it was n64, gamecube or in our adulthood the Wii. I have since seen the GameCube controller as the greatest controller ever made. The only flaw I see with the GameCube controller now is actually the d-pad itself. It's a small d-pad and sometimes it just kind of feels additional cumbersome to even press any buttons on the d-pad but I mean most of the time you're using the joystick and the C-stick anyways

13:57 I remember back then my brother and I looked through some kind of gaming magazine and he felt so disappointed about how he saw so many games that were available on Xbox and Playstation 2 but so many of these games did not have GameCube ports. Back in the early 2000s I wanted to convince my mom to actually get an Xbox because it did seem like the cool system of the time but she was completely against it because she said Microsoft was an evil company and yeah of course they are but she said that Microsoft at least back then and I guess it was more well-known that they did that back in the 90s and they do now, but they wanted to literally just eliminate all competition and just be the only computers in existence and os and existence I guess basically, I don't remember because it was so long ago but something like that and she refused getting an Xbox because of that but I guess maybe because she knows how much we loved the N64 and the Super Nintendo before that even though we also did love the PS1 and the Sega genesis, at least for me it wasn't as much as the Nintendo consoles, she went ahead and got us the GameCube and I loved it, but it was frustrating when there were some games that just weren't available there. But the GameCube exclusives was definitely where it was at for sure. My brother who complained about the GameCube when we look through that magazine did get himself an Xbox after all though
@platinumuschannelАй бұрын
For me, according to my experience, the format and the upgrade in tech did bring 3rd parties back to Nintendo following the 3rd party debacle of the N64, but they weren't porting the big games on the Gamecube, those went to the PS2 and Xbox. Every year I watched as those two go blockbuster after blockbuster. 2005 and 2006 were very dry years for me with the Gamecube, thankfully, I had an Xbox and a Dreamcast as well. The problem for Nintendo was that they couldn't or maybe they refused to read the room. It got so bad for them during these years that I remember a major retail outlet was offering brand new Gamecubes for $69.99 for a while, they just weren't selling. Forget the rose colored glasses, this was not a great era for Nintendo's home console. The GBA and the DS had to carry the torch until the Wii came out. One thing I really appreciate about the Gamecube is that UNLIKE the PS2, it's graphics have aged decently for what they were. PS2 had very muddy visuals, and far as I recall, it was intentional from Sony because it was meant to be a security measure, I think.

I buy only Nintendo stuff just for Nintendo games, not the too expensive other games, you can get all other games much cheaper for all of the other consoles legal or not :D Switch 2 will fail if it's unhacked -> 100% failrate

In Japan the Gamecube outsold the Xbox. So it's not black and white.

Japan is a much smaller country than US though.

I don't see how PS2 even survived, all the "best games" are shit i've never even heard of or had no interest in playing, bar Silent hill 2 and 3

GameCube was awesome, I loved its aesthetic and the games that were on it. It and the short lived Dreamcast were my favorites of the 6th generation consoles.

N64 was the first and last Nintendo Console I have ever owned. I remember Goldeneye and Perfect Dark being the only games I really enjoyed. Hence I saw the GC and thought it was too kid friendly, going into high school, the PS2 was the best decision.

doomed to fail yet biggest fighting game esport is exclusive to it? dumb title
@lapay6156Ай бұрын
So one title is gonna save a console? Do you know the sales of the game cube versus the PlayStation 2? Maybe watch the entire video
@bobfat3879Ай бұрын
Define fail please. PS2 sold at a loss and Xbox sold at a loss. Can you name the first Nintendo console sold at a loss please?
@thegaminganimationstudio7976Ай бұрын
What do you mean by at a loss?.
@bobfat3879Ай бұрын
The consoles cost more money to make than the company sold them for.

Look at that controller. What a disaster. A controller needs uniform size front buttons placed in a diamond. This makes finding buttons and play feel seamless and easy. I won’t even play GameCube because this controller is a product of a bad acid trip.
