T H I’m gathering this as I’ve watched more of his lectures. He avoids seeming defensive by preemptively attacking his would be doubters throughout the lecture. He’s a great speaker for sure. The more I’ve read the more he seems overconfident in his Philo Of Alexandria hypotheses. I’m intrigued in seeing more secular scholars debate the historicity of Jesus Christ but it would be preferable for it to be by people who don’t just outright find Christianity offensive. I like carrier, but he sometimes comes across as a disillusioned former Christian. I like the point he makes that there are too many Jesus apologists with evangelical agendas in the field. But I also don’t think historians with a grudge is any better.

@algoenespanol4 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Hughes I personally like that there’s poetry to the structure, and that there are elaborate ideas within the plot. But complexity doesn’t necessarily make it good literature. I think it’s important to be able to make the option that religious writings can be appreciated as literature and that some of it is amazing and some of it is awful. There’s a book that was helpful in this type of appreciation called “the enjoyment of scripture “
@algoenespanol4 жыл бұрын
its yaboii I mean if you believe that Jesus is god and god can do the impossible, of course you would hold Jesus to that standard. I personally don’t think that either being religious or atheist is easy. Life is hard no matter what. You just have different obstacles. Your experience might make theism harder so it’s a relief to have freedom from that. I think we hold on to stories that have meaning and show us a path. Sometimes science or idealism are a good vehicle for it. Some people need a supernatural narrative and belief adds value to that narrative. I don’t like to knock people for their beliefs. People’s behavior on the other hand is worth serious criticism. Sometimes unhealthy behavior comes from belief systems and that’s also worth examining.

@Leon thecat The list of Christians that contributed to the field of science is a quite bit more extensive than that. If your claim is all or even most scientific thinkers of antiquity were "pretending" to be Christian, you would have to support it with evidence. Also, why do you think science and religion have to be at odds? Plenty of modern Christian scientists and doctors would scoff at the idea. Ever consider they are intended to address different aspects of reality?
@soulcage62284 жыл бұрын
@Leon thecat *"These stories were presented and disseminated to placate and control the base instincts of the masses"* To be brief, religion deals with morality and the concept of right and wrong. This isn't within the purview of science, which is intended to tell us what's true about the physical world. If by "control" you mean it lays ground work for how we should treat each other, then for that I am grateful. You should be as well. Do you believe in objective morality? That is, a standard of right and wrong that transcends the personal opinions of all humans? The bible is not a science book btw. If you've categorized it as such you're doing it and yourself a disservice.
@soulcage62284 жыл бұрын
@Leon thecat *"The bible presents itself as a science book."* Have you read the bible? It's a collection of 66 books from 40 different authors. These books have varying genres, from proverbs, poetry in song of Solomon, and recorded history in books like Kings and Chronicles. The main "scientific" claim that the bible makes is that the universe had a beginning. Something that we've recently confirmed with the BGV theorem. *"Morality? Hogwash."* You still haven't answered the question. Do you believe that an objective moral standard exists? Can't use evolution, because some people have "evolved" to think murder is acceptable. If that's the case, how can we say that they are acting immorally?

I recently read the entire Bible. Most of the books of the old testament are written in almost the same way and it is meant to form a religion, a nation and give that nation land. The first four books of the New Testament repeat each other almost word for word with some exceptions and it is written to form another new religion based on the premise that Christ was God-like and he provides eternal bliss in heaven. It's based on miracles much more than the Old Testament. My impression was that the new testament was intended to dazzle and amaze people with more wondrous miracles them the Old Testament to attract as many adherents as possible. Some of it repeats the old testament, as this scholar points out.

@John MacArthur it's a metaphor ... he's not actually talking to a tree or cursing it for not producing figs ... It shows utter foolishness when you take metaphors for truth ... I'm just gonne give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were joking with that comment.
@BrutusAlbion4 жыл бұрын
@ Your comment towards John is quite wicked. God will choose his own. You have no right to say what John or Gods choice is or has been. You do not know until the day of judgement. In fact, you do not even know whether you are serving the god who is satan in disguise or the true god whom no one has seen yet. Therefore do not judge, you are not the judge.

@John MacArthur "no one knows when to take the Bible literally and when to take it figuratively." You are correct. The bible warns about this very fact (but no one actually takes it serious). That the false believers will turn everything upside down by the end. Spiritual and Physical are switched out. Now that you know this, it is easier to revert it back to the truth since all you need to do is find out what the common interpretation is and find the twist that makes it correct again. I will now try to answer the question on the fig tree as best as I can. Parable of The Fig Tree: "Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, 'May you never bear fruit again!' Immediately the tree withered. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. 'How did the fig tree wither so quickly?' they asked. Jesus replied, 'Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.'" My answer: Jesus was in Jerusalem the capitol of the Israelites, which is also supposed to be the spiritual city of god. Jesus is hungry, is he physically hungry? No he is hungry for the truth and the fruit of the spirit that is supposed to reside within Jerusalem/Israel. But there is nothing there, it is a spiritual wasteland and therefore the tree (Israel) only has leaves and bears no fruit. Will you let falsehoods and wrong belief stay within your heart that will not allow your soul and understanding to develop? Every false belief inside of your mind will not produce fruit but it will take up valuable space from which new trees could grow and produce fruit. When you learn a new truth that changes your reality and abolishes the old falsehood. You cast away the falsehood and create space for new truth (new tree) and fruit (realizations of that truth) to develop. The very essence of science is to discard that which is false and allow new ideas to prosper. When you cast away the falsehoods, the tree (neural network, since they have a similar appearance in branching pattern as a tree) in your mind that upholds that belief instantly starts to wither away upon realization. The mountain (perceived obstacles and blockage of thought) that was preventing you from moving on will also be thrown into the sea and disappear allowing you to develop your mind and soul further, thus creating a new path towards truth and further understanding. The Common Christian Narrative: The explanation for this verse is that the fig tree (''only'') resembles Israel/Jerusalem and that Jesus declares that it should wither because the jews have fallen out of favor with god. All you need is faith and you can move mountains. (Jerusalem is destroyed by the romans later and thus the (supposed) prophecy is made true.) The truth (imho) is that both explanations that I gave are true but some only pay attention to the tree being israel and that being faithful till stupidity (somehow) pays off lmao. You will notice clearly that (most of) the Christians who follow the common interpretation don't believe in science because they never understood the part about Jesus telling them that they themselves can do the same and tell the tree to wither inside of them so as to move mountains. They continue to feed a fruitless fig tree through sheer stubbornness of faith. You may think I am stretching with my interpretation but I am quite serious. The reason I say this is because if you are advanced enough in meditation/prayer you can actually see your own neural network inside your mind. It's a skill you can develop if you learn to properly pray which is not taught in church. It is a skill which is actually quite hard to develop and cannot be easily explained just as it cannot be explained how you should move your limbs or breath for example. You simply do. But when you do properly pray with your heart, a light will appear inside your inner mind that will guide you through your own mind and neural highways and allow you to reshape and correct yourself and eradicate falsehoods. This skill seems to have been neglected and common church prayer nowadays is just doing a little mantra and saying amen at the end. A fools ritual ... Science and Spirituality are not in contradiction with each other. Those that perceive conflicts are the ones who are feeding fruitless fig trees and thinking if they just wait a little longer the fig tree will produce fruit again. The reason Jesus did not answer these things directly in this parable is because the people who feed fruitless fig trees would obviously misinterpret the parable and avoid personal responsibility and just blame israel instead. Those that understand and realize the truth will see the parable with their own eyes and understand the greater meaning which was hidden on purpose and let the dead fig tree inside of them wither and see mountains move as their faith is reaffirmed and prospers. The parables are intentionally obfuscated in such a manner that false believers will not find the correct answer and be hypocrites in their believes. Those that truly seek will continue searching and searching until they one day find the answer after hard work. The hard work that the false believers were not willing to put in. I do not go to church or follow any church doctrine. I think church is cancer and a mind control system and therefore do not bother with all the thousands of ridiculous denominations or interpretations of fools. Church is literally a fruitless fig tree. If you are looking for the truth in earnest and keep an open mind and heart. You will find the way. That is all that is asked of you in this life. Looking for the Truth is the same as looking for God but most importantly ... looking for the true you. It is always an ever going quest to find the Truth and your True Self, those that say they know, they don't know and those that say they don't know, they know more than those that say they do. For one is at least looking for new perspectives whereas the other is staring at the same dead spot the entire time waiting for magical fruit to appear. If you are critical of the bible, that is the proper way of reading it my friend. Only fools read and believe instantly whatever they read. Let the fools be fools but let your own imagination speak to you and guide you so as to allow all possible interpretations no matter how crazy they may be enter into your mind and you will find new paths and new ways to develop your soul and ultimately the truth will open up and you will taste the fruit of your labor. You must first throw away of what you think a christian is or what faith even means since it is clearly based on something rigged (and false natured) that you have seen around you and come to accept as real. Stop feeding that tree. That is not what faith truly is. Faith is like following a path knowing that if you keep on the path you will find the destination you were heading for in your heart. It's a trail of bread crumbs that will eventually lead to the river of life from which you will drink and understand. Hope this helped a little bit. Plz take care friend.
@BrutusAlbion4 жыл бұрын
@John MacArthur I see and I completely understand that perspective as one who held it as well at one time. I wish I could show you what I could see so you would understand but alas I cannot, you can hopefully trust my word as a fellow human to human who wishes nothing more than to share truth with another. Not faith, but truth my friend. Like telling you that your tail light is broken. I will tell you when it is functioning instead. The (active) Holy Spirit is a real thing, it's not a mystical thing and many people claim to have it when they do not. They just pretend that they do. It's rather simple to know whether you have it active or not. It's a light that shines inside your mind when you close your eyes or heck even when you don't close them. It's literally (and NOT figuratively) a light that shines within. Many Christians claim they have the holy spirit but they don't even know what it really is or how it looks like. So what is it really? I will tell you. It's a piece of the original source fractal that generates and sustains our universe and our souls, it is the soul itself in practice. Fractals are these weird mathematical multi-dimensional oddities that are both subject and object, infinite and finite. It's math in its most beautiful and living form and you should try to look them up if you are interested in them scientifically. It is truly fascinating and yet barely comprehensible. Jesus could not speak about fractals or the truth of our reality because many of these words did not exist in his time. That is why parables and objects with similar appearance are used throughout time and faiths from all over the world to resemble these incomprehensible concepts so as to approach the truth in a understandable way. You will know when you have found the truth when the light shines within you my friend. Similarly in many ways I have not changed my beliefs since I was an atheist because my faith was never contingent on fairy tales but built on broadening science and spirituality until it fitted neatly and properly. I simply expanded my understanding and definitions of words to be more broad and encompassing loosening the restrains on my mind and thinking freely. When you broaden your perspective, you will see that you've been looking with one eye closed for the truth. People of faith are blind in that they lack scientific understanding and cannot apply their faith to science and thus reject it with stubborn conviction that lacks truth. People of science are blind in that they fail to broaden their understanding of scripture and fail to realize spirituality is the application of science in a broader human context and thus they firmly reject faith thinking it lacks meaning. Find the middle path that combines both. I wish you well and thank you for reading and considering my words.

After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people" (Matthew 27:52-53). And we know this really happened because the other gospel writers confirm it! Oh, my bad, no one else mentions it. But other historians of the time confirm it! Oh, my bad, there's no record of this anywhere. But it's not like the other gospel writers or any pagan historians would've noticed *HORDES OF WALKING DEAD PEOPLE* !!! When I was a Christian, the credibility of the Bible was beyond controversy. And so, even as my faith eroded over decades... the Bible yet retained a lingering place of incontrovertible deference. Recently, I became aware that this had changed. We were watching a court scene in a film. A witness was called and asked to swear on the Bible that his testimony would be truthful. But when the Bible was solemnly brandished, it suddenly became clear that an oath sworn on this collection of fairytales was meaningless. How would we all respond if witnesses were required to swear their oaths on Grimm’s fairytales; or 1001 nights?

@@phil6bien The bible has been debunked as fiction by science, archaeology and biblical scholarship, but you can prove that it’s false yourself with a simple experiment. The anonymous scribes who wrote the fictional gospel tales claim that Jesus said: "If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer" (Matt. 21:22). “Whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you" (John 16:23), "whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours" (Mark 11:24). So go ahead and set up your video camera and pray for Jesus to appear to you right now! If my reality-based worldview is correct, nothing will happen, which I can predict in advance. But feel free to prove it to yourself that Jesus is imaginary. To counter any excuses, the bible claims that Jesus appeared to people after his supposed death (1 Cor. 15:3-8), including the claim that he appeared to 500 people at once, and appeared to Paul. So the authors of the gospel tales knew that it was necessary to PROVE claims by having Jesus appear to people after his death in order to provide EVIDENCE that he was really resurrected. 1) If Jesus was real, and a god, he COULD appear to you, or to anyone. 2) He supposedly appeared to others in ancient stories that we have no evidence for. 3) Jesus supposedly promised to appear in response to prayers. 4) FACT: Regardless how much you pray or ask...he won't appear. The most likely explanation for the above? Fictional literary characters can't hear prayers or do anything in real life. Jesus won’t appear because he CAN’T, and because the authors of the gospel tales were liars. Praying to Jesus is no different than praying to Spider-Man or Gandalf, or any other fictional character in a book. Feel free to list your excuses for why Jesus doesn't appear. I'll play 'logical fallacy bingo' with your responses. Also, why am I accurately able to predict the outcome in advance? “The predictive power of a scientific theory refers to its ability to generate testable predictions.” By the way, liars like to say, “Do not put my lies to the test,” but those telling the truth don’t mind if you validate their claims. Right?

The 2,000 pigs are a metaphor for the Roman 10th Fretensis Legion that was in the area of Syria and Galilee during Jesus' lifetime. Its battle flags carried the image of a wild boar (or pig) as its mascot. So when Jesus drives the "legion" from the demoniac, he is referring to a Roman legion of 2,000 troops that have a wild boar as their mascot image. So basically, Carrier hasn't done his homework on this. Metaphors can be used to disguise historical events, especially among populations occupied by foreign powers.

If a criminal ends up finding inspiration in the correct and valid work of a scientist, how does that make the scientist guilty or its work any less credible? Imagine we arrest a serial killer and, in court, we asked him *why* did he do it, just to have the raving lunatic answer that he got inspiration for his crimes in the theory of gravity!! Should we then "outlaw" gravity? Or perhaps hold gravity accountable as well (guilty by association)? Or should we just understand that crazies will be crazies? My point is, *get real,* dude!! I know that it must suck having your pet beliefs smashed by *Science* but trying to make Science sound "guilty" somehow, just to get back at it, is dumb as shit!!! My favorite specious claim of the Holy Bible is Timothy 10:6: "For the love of money is the root of all evil." 2000 years ago money was almost a new invention so it should have been evident to anyone at that time that there where many forms of evil that predated it. Lying and deceit are more likely to be the "root of all evil," but a deceptive liar isn't going to tell anyone that. They are more likely to say something that will separate someone from their money.

I'll tell them how their attitudes are shaped more by the society they are always struggling to climb to be part of a better society so they can leave the society they are in behind rather than being part of society more than paying attention to what their "Holy Scripture" says. Like the guy giving the lecture says, the Bible speaks largely from a position of assumed authority so the "pew warming statues" are only taking part in being part to sanctify their own selves/lives/wealth/authority. The verses following Timothy 10:6 generally say to loathe "rich" people. "Rich" is a relevant term. I am rich in ways no one else might value but to go with the assumption of the text it means momentarily well endowed. There is a very distinct evil there involving "rich" people becoming the masters of society, which brings me to another evil that predates money and that is enslavement. If there is one unifying characteristic among all people it is that no one is or ever has been perfect. Tell that to a Christian and you get summarily corrected. The Bible enslaves people to the notion that they must strive to be perfect like Jeebus. If the Bible was worth the adulation it receives it would emphasise accepting everyone and everything natural as God's creation. I don't see much of that happening.

I'm not impressed when I see them rolling out the church parking lot in BMW's or mercedes while a true christian loses their head in a war torn country.They are suppose to be meek and humble. My favorite miss quote is the love of money is the root of all evil. It doesn’t say “all”. It says “many”. The lust of money is the root of many evils. And the use of the word money means gold, silver coins. And yes, they had that and no it was not “new”. It funny how people have to write books telling everyone that something isn’t true - like this is a new idea. The only people buying these books are the other people that wrote books about the same thing. If I’m wrong about God and there is really nothing then it’s no big deal. I’ll die and everything is over. But if you guys are wrong and there is a God, it will be a very big problem for you. I like my chances a little better.

Paul started by persecuting Christians as heretics, why did he do that? Jews could've simply stated that Jesus never existed. He is like the guy who would watch a cartoon and keep saying "that's unrealistic, that couldn't happen in real life!" It's a healthy reaction when you are 10 years old. But to hear a historian criticize a historical source (not a historical work and never claiming to be one) for not conforming to the modern standards is shocking. And then draw a conclusion that since it doesn't have a bibliography in the end and contains miracles and other improbable events, then it is completely fictional and there's nothing more to talk about. Think of it - if you were to write a fictional story of a son of God who you invented, would you rather write a contradictory account where facts don't match, and he ends up killed anyway. Or a story like Hercules or Ulysses? Mark portrayed Jesus way, way more modestly than some people portray themselves.The point being that if the Gospels were myth, Jesus would have been shown much more perfect and powerful, but he wasn't. And that suggests that the authors of Gospels had much less room for imagination than, say, Homer, because they wrote not about some legendary old days, but about something that happened decades ago, and that was probably still in the public memory, especially since there were plenty of Christians at the time. And the illogical actions hint that the authors wanted to present what happened in a specific light, thus needing to add something, for example so that it fulfills some prophecy from the Old Testament.

That said, I can imagine being reincarnated in 2000 years time and finding a religion based on an ancient text that was found that reveres a boy Wizard living at a magical place called Hogwarts and it’s offensive to not believe it at face value.😊

@@Juliet_Capulet I have been reading Ehrman who I respect and they are at odds over the historical Jesus. A debate there would be good.
@mythbuster14833 жыл бұрын
@@pinball1970 Yes, but if you read Ehrman's book on the subject, he only expresses his BELIEF in a 'historical Jesus' as the most likely explanation for what he thinks the evidence is...which is based on his BELIEF in HYPOTHETICAL SOURCE DOCUMENTS such a the "Q Source", etc. See the topic "List of Gospels" in Wikipedia, and the subsection "Hypothesized sources of the synoptic gospels". If you have to base your argument on HYPOTHETICAL SOURCES that don't actually exist, one could say that your argument is pretty weak. That isn't actual evidence, just another unsupported claim. For instance, could you be charged with a crime just because I told police that some hypothetical documents from unknown authors claimed you were a serial killer? The problem with the entire argument is that the source documents are either imaginary, or written by unknown, biased Christian scribes dated hundreds of years after the supposed events, which Dr. Ehrman acknowledges to be "full of lies", fiction and forgery: "But good Christian scholars of the Bible, including the top Protestant and Catholic scholars of America, will tell you that *the Bible is full of lies* , even if they refuse to use the term. And here is the truth: Many of the books of the New Testament were written by people who lied about their identity, claiming to be a famous apostle - Peter, Paul or James - knowing full well they were someone else. In modern parlance, that is a lie, and a book written by someone who lies about his identity is a forgery." - Who Wrote The Bible and Why It Matters The arguments of 'historical Jesus' defenders all suffer from the FALLACY OF ANONYMOUS AUTHORITY - “When an unspecified source is used as evidence for the claim…Appeals to anonymous sources are more often than not, a way to fabricate, exaggerate, or misrepresent facts in order to deceive others into accepting your claim” - Logically Fallacious. Christianity is FOUNDED on the fallacy of anonymous authority, as all Christian claims ultimately derive from ancient manuscripts written by anonymous, biased cult members that date hundreds of years or more after the supposed events they describe, are filled with fiction, forgery and fraud, and make absurd claims about events the authors couldn’t POSSIBLY have witnessed, such as the impregnation of Jesus’ mother by a god, a conversation between Jesus and Satan while he was ALONE in the wilderness, etc. Why not simply acknowledge that we have no credible evidence for a historical Jesus? Claims aren't evidence that the claims are true, and there is no independent evidence outside writings by anonymous Christian scribes.
@pinball19703 жыл бұрын
@@mythbuster1483 I have learned one thing I think. To be prepared to change my mind. I managed to do that to accept the Bible was man made and not inspired by god. I thought Jesus was just a man, then possibly did not exist, then probably did (reading Ehrman) now the jury is out again! Each time more arguments coming forward. At least I am listening to and reading the right people now.
@mythbuster14833 жыл бұрын
@@pinball1970 I agree with you. And it's also a matter of understanding the limits to what you can know. The 'historical Jesus' discussion is a bit silly in some ways because the 'Christ of faith' has already been debunked. The majority of scholars, Ehrman included, don't think Jesus' mother was impregnated by a god, or that Jesus was a virgin-born demigod with superpowers, or that his rotting corpse magically returned from the dead, etc. Whether or not the gospel fairy tales are 1) pure fiction or 2) fiction based loosely on a real historical figure, Christianity has been debunked. This is why some scholars say the debate about a 'historical Jesus' is just a debate among atheists. As an atheist, it doesn't really matter to me either way. But after investigating this thoroughly, and I have a library full of books by biblical scholars, it's obvious that the various opinions are based on the LEAST CREDIBLE kinds of literary claims---which are anonymously written works by biased members of a cult, dated hundreds of years after the supposed events, which are filled with proven fiction, forgery and fraud. I don't know how anyone can claim that it is a 'fact' either way when the stories are simply not historically credible, and there is no actual evidence to confirm that they are true. Even if you investigate claims made about 'Josephus' and 'Tacitus', you'll find that they are based on manuscripts from the 11th century, written by Christian scribes, that contain proven fiction and/or forgery. If you want some specific examples, just let me know.
