What's even more crazy about Paris rn is that even though the grand Paris express is not finished, the region is already launching the preparatory studies to build a 19 th line in the north and planning expansions to the other lines... It feels crazy to see so much being built, and see that they do not intend on stopping there!

well yes I understand your point of view. We complain a lot about transit in Paris so it's realy simple to forget a lot of city doesn't have what we got. But a lot of people think the 19 line is a bad idea : a lot of project are on track and people fear this new one suck financing. For example the extension of tram express 11, which was due to 202x, is a least 10 year late. Leader love starting new think without planning @@yannischupin7787

@KyrilPG
@KyrilPG 7 ай бұрын
@@TalwinderDhillonTravels Old topic? The very first parts are opening this year in spring 2024 and this will kick-start the massive acceleration of Paris' transit-a-palooza era. About 34 kilometers of new rail-based extensions and 24 new stations opening in and around Paris between March and June 2024, roughly 22km of which are for the Grand Paris Express : new 8km tunnel under the core and 3 huge new stations for phase 1 of RER E Western extension ; 3.2km Western extension of circular line T3b with 7 new stations ; 2.4km Northern M14 tunnel extension to Saint-Denis Pleyel GPE hub and inauguration of it ; 14km Southern M14 tunnel extension to Orly airport with 7 underground stations ; 6km Eastern M11 extension to Rosny-sous-Bois GPE interchange with 6 new stations, 5 underground and 1 elevated... In the last decade or decade and a half, there was a huge tramway expansion with a dozen lines opening left and right. Now comes the big and heavy stuff, with something major opening almost every year between 2024 and 2030-2032, it's very much current! And chatter will only keep increasing as we get closer to the first opening and then to each major milestone. Though, one can regret that the video seems to be stuck in the past when everything was still a matter of imagination and preliminary artistic renderings. It should have at least included some recent shots of the developments currently underway, or real footage of the trains being tested.

How does this project compare to the London Crossrail Project/Elizabeth Line?
@KyrilPG
@KyrilPG 5 ай бұрын
The Elizabeth line is London's version of Paris RER and, more specifically, line A. The RER was built by repurposing existing or former suburban lines and creating new ones. Then, by building a massive central section tunnel to link them, with gigantic stations aimed at extreme capacity. All this on a cross-city scope, with branches. It also followed parallel to a long existing and saturated metro line in the center in order to relieve it. It's the same model that was used for Elizabeth line. The relieved line was M1 in Paris (then once again another support line, M14, was built in the 90's in the center of the corridor), and it's the Central line in London. The missions of RER A or Elizabeth line are the same: To allow fast, high capacity, high frequency cross-city journeys via the center, paralleling an extremely busy Metro or Tube line and relieving it. The shape of RER A and Elizabeth line is even similar, they both run East-West with branches and link both the historical and newer business districts of their respective cities. RER A is now Europe's busiest mass transit line (or the world outside Asia) by carrying regularly more than 1.5 million people in a day. The trains are gigantic and carry more than 3000 passengers. Elizabeth line should really soon become the East-West backbone of London's network. The Grand Paris Express, on the other hand, is quite different : it is a set of 4 entirely new and fully automated express metro lines (plus 3 major extensions on 2 existing lines), not repurposing any existing or former lines, so the 200km of new lines are all built from scratch. 90% of the total, or roughly 180km, are built deep underground. The remaining 10% or 20km is mostly on viaducts with a few bits at grade. It's aimed at offering rapid orbital journeys with plenty of connections, from suburbs to suburbs, while completely bypassing the center. The expected ridership on the GPE itself is over 3 million daily. The GPE's design is not complete yet, a section in the West of the city, specifically the one between Versailles and La Défense that is often represented as a dashed line on GPE maps, is not yet defined. This part's definition is expected in the near future, and a 19th metro line was recently proposed by the region and the transit authority. So, a GPE 1.5 is expected in the near future, an extension to the extension. As for the building part : at some point during the peak works of the first major building phase, up to at least 21 TBM's were digging simultaneously and advancing tunnels by more than 250 meters per day. A few months ago, the 100km milestone of built tunnels was passed. Only less than 80km of tunnels remain to be built, and they should reach peak digging of the second phase in 2025. That's, of course, what remains of the current design state of the project, not including the dashed line in the West. GPE lines are orbital, especially M15, which is a gigantic 75km long loop line around Paris, entirely in newly built tunnels. M16 and M17 will have a short interlined section, which is a first in the Paris metro. M16 will form an arch in the Northeastern quadrant, connecting with M15's tail deep in the Eastern suburbs. M17 will serve both le Bourget business airport and CDG, the main Parisian international airport. M18 will start from Orly, Paris second international airport, where it connects with the M14 extension. It will then serve the "Brainiac Valley" where many of the most prestigious science universities and specialized schools are located (like Polytechnique, etc.), and forming an arch to reach Versailles. As mentioned, the part between Versailles and La Défense isn't defined yet. For magnitude comparison between the Crossrail and GPE projects : The Crossrail project had 21km of new twin tunnels (6.2m in diameter) and 10 newly built stations, the rest was repurposed existing infrastructure. The Grand Paris Express has 180 kilometers of tunnels, mostly 10 meter wide, out of 200km of entirely new lines, 84 entirely new stations (68 on the new lines, 16 on the extensions), the vast majority of them being deep underground. Plus 220 new fully automated Alstom Metropolis trains. They both are fantastic projects, but they are not exactly comparable in scope. Even if their cost is roughly 1 to 2 between Elizabeth line and Grand Paris Express, the size of the GPE is several folds the size of Crossrail. This underlines the cost ballooning issues in the UK with major infrastructure projects. For 22 billion euros, London gets one line with a 21km long new underground central section, 10 new stations out of 41 stops, and some repurposed suburban branch lines, plus 70 new trains. For 42 billion euros, Paris gets 4 new lines and 3 extensions representing 200km of new lines built from scratch, including 180km of new tunnel sections, 84 entirely new stations, 220 new fully automated trains, and last but not least : a massive renewal of the urban fabric, including major housing projects and traffic calming measures. In parallel, there are plenty of other transit expansion developments, the GPE is only one part of a larger scheme. Currently, there's a 360km overall transit expansion underway covering metro, RER, trams, at least one new urban multi-station gondola line and several new proper busway-bustram BRT lines. The GPE represents 200 of the current 360 kilometer expansion of mass transit. The part of GPE that is comprised of extensions, namely to M11 and M14, will open before the end of June this year. There's also an important RER E tunnel extension opening around the same time, with 3 major new stations, plus an orbital tram T3b extension. It's transit-a-palooza in Paris... So both projects are quite different, but if the GPE can be of use for London, it is by directing the focus on the outrageous and abnormal costs of infrastructure development in the UK.

Your first analysis is right. people mostly live in the suburbs, Paris itself is to expensive. and for teh same cost reasons, most of teh jobs are located in cheaper area outside the city. therefore comuting from one suburb to another is mandatory. this leads to major traffic jams, which are a loss of time and money for the people and teh companies and an environnemental disaster. allowing quicker and more efficient public transport by direct lines is a good option to move more people in a shorter time. It can only get better than what it is/was.

The idea is to change transportation in Paris which would already be good enough. Now if you compare Paris line 15 to Seoul line 2, the main difference is speed. Seoul line 2 has 51 stops over 60km of length. Paris metro line 15 will have only 36 stops over 75km of length. Basically there are 1 stop every 1km in Seoul and 1 stop every 2km in Paris. Paris line 15 will also be fully underground, fully automated with trains operated at 120 kph. Lines 16, 17 and 18 have even less stops making them even faster. Obviously the Asia-Pacific region is doings marvels when it goes about urban engineering, but it's a bit excessive to call this Paris project "outdated".
