The Prawns landed on earth over Johannesburg, South Africa, no one invited them and the South African government had to spend massive amounts of resources to accommodate. The MNU was hired to move the Prawn from district 9 to district 10 and were labeled as evil mercenaries for just doing their job, we would argue otherwise.

There has been on and off again talk of a sequel ever since District 9 came out. It would show what happens when "Christopher" returns. It wouldn't be more of the same, and it apparently wouldn't be a traditional humans vs alien story. Instead there were doing to be competing factions on each side. Last I heard it's either in development hell or the script isn't right yet.

Matches the parallels of the apartheid era camps. White South Africans pointed at the lack of unity and cooperation in the camps despite all being the same as evidence of their barbarity. The first thought that struck me when I heard that the Human researchers had to cut their way into a ship and then found all the aliens were Malnourished and sickly inside, is that they might be outcasts or prisoners or were being quarantined or something that were exiled on basically a prison vessel. Doesn’t seem like they we’re meant to get out.

The fact that being exposed to the black stuff turns a human into a prawn suggests that the prawns could be many different species of aliens. If the ship developed a leak in the fuel system that powers all their technology it's likely that every type of animal that gets exposed would become a prawn. This would also explain the situation they found the ship in. If the fuel can turn a man into a prawn why not a rat or cockroach? It would explain so many things about the differences between the behavior of the different prawns depending what kinds of animals they were before being exposed. Also if it was a recent event many of them would still have the mind of an animal. Only the pilot and his son would have been safe from the animals that suddenly became prawns because he detached the command module. The rest of the crew would be trapped with the animals and probably killed by them.

One interesting thing that aligns with your stance is why the aliens have the tech to alter a different species into a prawn. The prawns could be not just a separate class of their own, but a bioengineered species of slaves by the true alien leaders. With that tech, they could conquer us and then assimilate our entire species into the prawn class as slaves. Great video btw

It doesn't have to be an intentional effect of the substance. It could be a regenerative medicine for curing prawns of virtually any possible alien contagion, by actually regenerating their body. A non-prawn comes in contact with it and what is a helpful treatment becomes a deadly retrovirus. (that usually doesn't even work on non-prawns) Written on the side of the "battery" was "Do not ingest if not prawn", (as far as we know) but you are proposing that this is some sort of evidence for a hostile strategic intent. These guesses about intentions are based on huge assumptions, many of them being unknown unknowns. This is no different from a human being walking into an alien fusion reactor compartment on the ship, not understanding what the purpose of the room is, the radiation shielding is damaged, the human die gruesome deaths, and then assessing that the prawns intentionally activated some sort of security device to defend the room from humans.

I think district 9 has a deeper message, in that the prawns embody the role of ‘another group’. In that it shows humanities weakness for things that differ from ones norm. Then again it also shows the willingness of people to help others in need. Therefore I feel this movie is somewhat of a mirror, showing us how we have behaved and to an extended still behave.

One thing I agree with Allen, these are aliens and not humans. All joking aside that is very important to keep in mind. As aliens, we know exactly zip about them. We don't even know what the ship was. Allen suggests invasion ship it also could be a penal ship. It could be that the ship was transporting the most violent members of their species (Which would explain some of their behavior) to a highly secure prison somewhere when the guidance system was broken by the inmates after they killed their guards and, they wound up here by mistake. The could be a full-fledged colony ship that would have behaved as badly or worse than European colonists treated the natives in "White Colonies" such as the US, Canada and Australia. All that weaponry being on board is not a good sign. Aside from the movie itself if we run into an alien species we should treat it with caution. Not hostility but caution. We should find out as much as we can about them as quickly as possible. They could be good, bad or some mixture of the two for us. We might accidentally insult them by acting in a manner that seems friendly to us but not to them. That might happen in the other direction. We won't know why they contacted us but it could be good or bad. Neither can be ruled out. Their motivations are likely quite different than ours. They would have an entirely different evolutionary path and have an entirely different culture.

Humanity did make mistakes, *we didn't steal their ship.* The ship should have been full of research teams trying to figure out how it works - hopefully without turning it off above a major city… Maybe it could have even been towed to a facility, or a structure built to encompass it. Thus giving the chance for more extensive testing and maybe even partial disassembly in controlled circumstances. That was the greatest technological prize, interstellar travel. The Alien's weaponry was impressive, but except for the exoskeleton (which MNU* didn't know about), individual weapons would lose to a platoon of human soldiers, let alone heavy weapons. But being able to travel the stars, visit new worlds, and _claim them and their inhabitants in the name of Humanity._ That would revolutionise human society far more than handheld energy weapons. And study of the ship could've also led to breakthroughs in power generation, solving many, many problems on Earth. We fight each other and pollute our only planet over scarce resources, when we could be instead united…fighting other species and taking their resources (and not polluting _our_ Homeworld). At the very least a large research team and the accompanying security forces could have retaken the ship when one of the secretive "leader" caste stole it in clear violation of accepted salvage rights. No doubt to bring more Aliens to Earth while meanwhile leaving us with the problem of a rapidly breeding population of moronic arthropods with superhuman strength. If there was nothing sinister in his intent, why didn't he control the workers and make them less confrontational. Why didn't he try and negotiate their departure, removing a growing threat to the local humans. The secrets to a few useful technological advancements, say in power generation would have been a useful barging chip. And why did he have a fluid that overwrote blessed human DNA and metamorphosed anyone exposed into one of their species? Was that their plan all along, turn key human personnel into Prawns in order to help take us over? We were fortunate that they didn't bother to include a number of spare leader types - or maybe a particularly dumb worker accidentally fired a blaster in the captain's ready room during a senior staff meeting. * The other big mistake was in letting Nigerian gangs horde alien weaponry, not only did it carry the risk that if the secret of using alien weaponry got loose they would have serious firepower, they might have been able to get the Prawns to follow their orders and just be grunts. And they were depriving MNU of research items. MNU should have cleared out the gangs in a military operation. And then gone into the *_cat food_*_ retail business_ as the sole supplier to the refugee community. In a little while they would have ever piece of technology that the Prawns had somehow been allowed to smuggle off their disabled ship that had crashed in human territory. We let them get away, and we let the go with knowledge of our Homeworld. They will be back, and we have lost the chance to meet them out in space with our own ships. We lost the initiative.

I feel like you're onto something with that idea, however I do not think a majority of our scientist would even begin to understand the Prawn tech. Like you said we are wasting time with handheld energy guns after all. We can't even seem to get that right let alone figuring out how to backward engineer a space fairing specie's spacecraft. We would need their help in understand the technology. Now this is were the movie Arrival shows the true value in communication with an initially non-hostile xeno species. Once we can develop communication at an advanced level we can then hopefully learn so much from them. We need to build trust while keeping one hand hidden just in case of rebellion. Only then can we learn from them and their technological advancements and then harness them as our own. This is what it means to survive the galactic circle of life and to be at the top of the food chain. Learn from your enemies, improve yourself, and make what was once their advantage your own. For all of mankind.

The point of District 9 was to highlight that discrimination comes from surface-level observation. We, as an audience, know that the prawns are not just physically superior, but they’re capable of human-level intellect; Wikus is living proof of that. Despite the fact that they came on a spaceship, and have access to advanced technology, our instinct, because of their gnarly appearance, is to segregate, criminalize, and profit off of an otherwise helpless species. We’ve seen themes like this for ages like Caliban in Shakespeare's, ”Tempest.” How the prawns arrived, and what their intentions are is intentionally irrelevant. Blomkamp wants us to focus on the human reaction to their arrival and draw ethical questions. There is a lot of gray in this film for a reason, and Blomkamp's biases lean in favor of the prawns.

I think theres a discrepancy between being "humane" and being practical. It was the practical option to dissect his body to try and understand how to use their weapons, but it wasnt humane. This is especially showcased in the unnecessary misstreatment that occured every step of the way. Humans were seen physically kicking and mistreating the aliens regardless of them doing anything wrong. another example, when the scientists decided to test the weaponry by shocking him for example even after he said he would pull the trigger;as well as of course completely disregarding his life or any suffering completely. Like you said they couldve taken a blood sample but they didnt even take the time to explore other options, they didnt care for his life and decided to just kill him without an afterthought. This is obviously an extremely inhumane way to go about things. Its especially demonstrated at the end when the antagonist literally decides he wants to kill the main character because hes caused him trouble. Meaning hed jeopardize the practical research that wouldve supposedly helped humanity just because he wants to kill. His quote something along the lines of "my favorite thing in the world is killing these prawns" With that said I dont see how you can come to the conclusion that humans in this film generally acted "humanely" in any capacity. You could say "they did what they had to do" but that doesnt make it humane. And just for reference, the definition of humane: 1: marked by compassion, sympathy, or consideration for humans or animals

@Dadecorban 3 жыл бұрын
So let me drop some wisdom on you. It's impossible to get normal people to engage in practical but inhumane behavior for functional reasons and not dehumanize, and devalue the target of the inhumane behavior. That's how our brains work. Once you dehumanize them, and devalue them to the point that you can do these practical things on living creatures, it's an unavoidable side-effect that the normal human beings involved are going to also mistreat them when there is no practical or function reason to do so. It works this way because 98% of human beings aren't monsters. In order to get human beings to to the point that they can dissect another sentient being, you have to get them to the point where kicking them for no reason is no different than swatting a fly or finishing off a mouse caught in a trap. This is the way this works, and every terrible situation in human history is a case study. You can't separate these two things, and you can't expect one to happen and not the other. It's also does a disservice and is unreasonable to expect human beings that we put in these situations to act differently, cruel even. This is why modern militaries so heavily regulate what soldiers are allowed to do. Once a US soldier steps over or past a wounded enemy soldier that enemy becomes a POW that must be treated like a human being. We specialize who is allowed to kill them, and when, and make those people different from who gets to interrogate them. You very narrowly allow these practical things in a way that minimizes the side-effects and even then normal human beings have problems functioning in acceptable ways. Abu Ghraib happened and was a huge scandal and no one even died or was permanently harmed, and its exactly what happens when normal human beings are put in those situations where the rules aren't strictly followed, and compartmentalization of tasks isn't held to. Once civilian employees are openly dissecting sentient human beings for practical purposes you are way past any sort of working rules like the military is capable of mostly enforcing on highly trained people......there is absolutely no reason to expect normal human beings not to also kick that same creature for no reason, at some later point and it be fairly accepted within the group; anymore than you should expect a match to not light when struck.

Incompetent? How do? From the way it’s described in the film SA was (obviously) unprepared to deal with a million+ non humans. Then had to deal with it by themselves and with no real aid. The situation became unsustainable because the prawn population had grown and district 9 had become overcrowded. They also caused lots of damage and death to the locals, pushing the people to the brink. Moving the prawns was the only solution outside of just killing them all. And while MNUs secondary objective was a bit greedy it was also logical.

Imagine being a space faring civilization and then when you make it clear you mean no harm, didn’t mean to arrive, and just want to leave to a simpler civilization that would be equal to us in the dark ages, and they steal your defenses, put you in concentration camp conditions where people will literally cut you up and eat you to get your “power” all while their military is making large scale attempts to separate and abandon you completely. After 20 years of that, would you not be extremely angry? or slowly losing you mind due to drug like addictions to the planet’s food? We won't why they have weapons, I would argue peaceful or not, it's best to have a way to defend yourself in case things go south.
@Jarnauga
@Jarnauga 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The argument that they have guns meaning any kind of hostile intention makes no sense. If we send a ship into space, to explore for example, of course we would take adequate amounts of weaponry, since there is no telling what we might encounter. Even if our planet were to be destroyed and we had to flee as refugees into space, hoping to find another planet to live on or find refugees with some potential species that might live somewhere, but we don't know anything about, we would take all the weapons we can get our hands on. Of course, refugees on earth usually flee to other humans, who in these days, they know quite a bit about and don't have to pack weapons, but if you flee without knowing were you are going or what you might encounter, you take a weapon, that is not just human, but quite logical, rational behavior.

My theory: (Spoiler Alert) This is a story of imprisonment and bad luck. I always thought the black fluid transformed the alien crew. It altered their DNA and transformed them into prawns like it did Wikus van de Merwe. It was this black fluid that made them disinterested in improving their situation and unruly (it was a necessary tradeoff in order to survive the long journey). This perhaps was a method of the altering the original species to handle the rigors and dangers of space travel. This was standard operating procedure to metamorphose into a tougher organism then reverse the condition with the machines on the mother ship. Christopher Johnson said he knew how to fix Wikus, and I believe he would have done it if the MNU wasn't dissecting his peeps. Something happened on the mother ship prior to arriving Johannesburg and forced Christopher to seek shelter in the command module (he was the smart one and would have fixed the crew, but he couldn't). When the ship was boarded by the humans, that's when he left the mother ship. He never got an opportunity to revert to his original form and do the same for the rest of the crew. They are all imprisoned to live as prawns and savor cat food. District 9 was a great movie, and I want a sequel! When Christopher comes back, we'll see what the original species looked like (maybe it's us?).

In my opinion Christopher kept his word and did come back to help Wickus. This, I believe is shown in Elysium with the machine that cures diseases and can pretty much alter DNA. "Needless to say" the allegory of the film effectively depicts xenophobia even in the counterarguments made in this video. There's a lot of I don't understand them, so I'll just assume based on what I know from Earth species, ignoring the fact that the prawns are obviously of higher intelligence : It's okay to destroy prawn spawn because egg-laying species generally don't mind losing them. They must be drone classes because they seem animalistic and are, thus, expendable. What? This assigning of traits is classic xenophobia. There's also the part where the film shows weapon testing against a prawn that has their hands up. You can't be more "extremely humane" than that.

I think you missed the part where humans were responsible for the majority of altercations between Prawns and Humans in Joburg. It's also possible that this ship was a slave ship, and something happened to the crew operating the ship. This would explain why there were weapons aboard, as a means for the crew to protect themselves from a (probable) revolt from their slaves. Hell, that may have even happened. Also, you seem to be mistaking "Humane" with "Practical". It wasn't humane to relocate the Prawns, it was practical. It wasn't humane to uproot them yet again using illegal and militaristic methods, it was practical. I also noticed you specifically included clips of Prawns behaving animalistically. Not one clip of Christopher Johnson or his partner, or the clip of humans eating Prawns. Or the clips of the local news using propaganda to dehumanize prawns. Which, again, Prawn is derogatory. I find that there are a lot of ethical and moral double standards in your review which completely ignore the entire underlining argument of this film. The film gives us a "complete" picture of the events surrounding the arrival and management of this alien species by humans. Importantly, its documentary-style carries the undelining message that: when we objectify, and are indifferent towards, the conditions of these beings, it leads them to being mistreated and exploited. The first eviction scenes are a case in point. As the MNU goes from shack to shack, they make fun of the squalid conditions, glorify their new camps as more "safe", and at the same time, use certain language to "normalise" abhorrent living conditions or MNU actions against the aliens (that may lead to their death or injury) in order to desensitise the public and create a narrative that this is "normal". Your view that we are "saving" the aliens is a complete fallacy, because the whole concept of this movie is to criticise humanity and its past, by allowing us to openly see and be shocked by the raw happenings and activities of the MNU and the disinterest of the general public. It's like we are in the position of an investigative journalist. It seeks to create a different perspective and allow us to reflect on our position in society and how other minority groups are being exploited yesterday and today.

Well the covenant occupy a small part of space in the Orion arm near earth. Whereas the Imperium of man has occupied large sections of the entire galaxy for over 10,000 years so it's not much of a contest. The Covenant would be a major threat on a local level but would be dealt with once the imperium recognised the threat and mustered sufficient forces. If anything the Imperium is like a human version of the covenant on space steroids.

Some fair points. But the claim that they must be a different lesser sub species because they aren't shown the intellect to make powerful weapons is extremely racially charged. Some humans have made nukes and assault rifles. You ask most humans to make those? they can't. The fact the stranded and starved people who were stuck like that for at least 3 months with no equipment can't reproduce what presumably home planet scientists made doesn't make them "worker class drones". Hell one of them even is a scientist and is planning how to fix the entire super advanced ship by himself. I think the point you missed is that the prawns are obviously genetically different but are socially just as capable as humans. Ship a bunch of humans to a planet of mouse people, have some thing go wrong. Same situation, that's the social message of the movie that said I'm not arguing against the rest of the videos ideas
@JustinTK416
@JustinTK416 4 жыл бұрын
Pian Really that’s not even as racially charged as it is just kinda wrong. I mean, I’m white, educated, and could probably field strip a rifle or pistol even if I wasn’t wholly familiar with it (like with much difficulty, but you know...), but you ask me to build one... more so, build one from basically scratch while surviving as a refugee, haha yeah, I might, *might* be able to do that eventually. Key word: EVENTUALLY. Oh, and also making ammo would be even more of a struggle because I’d have to make gunpowder and I ain’t even got a clue on how to do that. (phosphorus is an ingredient if I remember right, but that’s the extent of my chemical understanding of it) I think one would be better off making a crossbow or something. Less moving parts, far more easily craftable ammunition, and easier to maintain. But anyway, I kinda derailed there, but I am agreeing with you overall. Modern weaponry alone is very intricate, so I can only imagine how many leagues more so an energy weapon would be. It’s not the kinda thing that can be built from slapping metal scraps together, and it takes specialized knowledge to be able to do it well WITH essential resources available.

@@boiiboii6310 If they planned coming to earth, sure. But that is not the case, or at least, if it was, then a lot went wrong. Because, if they had a plan to come there, they would have come, and then done something, like try to establish contact, communicate, or if their intention was war, then attack. If its just scouts, than at least they would do some sort of scouting and analyzing. But from what we see, it really does look like they are refugees, or a stranded ship that had a malfunction. Something of that sort. But there is really nothing to implicate any other plan than seeking refuge from something, or no plan at all, just bad luck they stranded on earth.

"Generally species that lay eggs and don't carry their young like mammals do, have less of an emotional attachment to their young" In the movie when you see an actual alien child with their parent, the parent is incredibly protective of him. When threatened to take his child away from him, Christopher, who had been calm, collected, and reasonable with them, has an emotional outburst. You seem to be ignoring the stuff that doesn't align with "the humans were right". Not to mention your dismissal of humane in the face of practicality. Which contradicts your claim that using metaphor is offensive to actual refugees and people that actually suffered.

It wasn't though. It was their own type of fuel cell that wasn't meant to be in contact with humans- it was meant to power their ship like a self sustaining biofuel. That's why their own ship couldn't go anywhere because they didn't have enough energy or strength to actually go anywhere else if they were using their own energy. Their weapons emit energy blasts but are genetically coded to be used by their own species so I think you missed that part. That's why humans were dissecting them and that drug overlord wanted the main character's pre-mutated prawn arm because he was a human-prawn hybrid at that point. All that weaponry was on board to protect the royalty.

Good or bad, I think it was the Humans' incompetence that resulted in much of the conflict & death in the film. For instance, regardless of whether or not they actually expected the saucer to be crewed &/or inhabited, they should have been prepared to set up a District 10-like facility before launching an expedition into it. There are few places worse than one of the most densely populated cities in the southern hemisphere, culturally scarred by nearly a century of racial tensions, to settle a million desperate non-humans

Doesn’t matter that they weren’t human, are they sentient? Do they have human intelligence with human like personalities. It’s not about being human it’s about being sentient. Now that being said, if the Prawns weren’t welcome, why not just help them find the command module, & help them leave? It was pretty obvious that their technology wasn’t compatible for human use. Plus I don’t think it was an invasion or colonization of this planet that was intended by the prawns. The way the story was going it sounded more like the queen or upper caste of the ship & the soldiers all died en route to someplace, & maybe some of the more intelligent workers (as there were some with more intelligence than others, as demonstrated by Prawn Christopher Johnson) used the ships sensors to find a planet like their own & earth was the planet they found & that’s why the Prawns came here.
