The problem is when people try to bring up various past historical events as "proof" that Christianity itself causes harm to society, those people really don't understand how past societies functioned. The Chruch was seen as the force that united a society and gave people their idenity. Nobody belived in freedom of religion back then. Each society was unified under its reigion, and to reject it was seen as disrupting the society's balance. The problem is we often impose our own 20th century ideals on old socieites, and fail to realize that such ideals simply did not exist back then. Building the Western Civilization as we know it today took centuries of trial and error.

With this video about the inquisition, I understand that you have notions about it and I want to see it, but in general, Spain from the Reconquest to the 18th century has been the greatest defender of Catholicism and the best example that the Counter-Reformation brought about many advances and Catholicism championed world progress in many aspects.

@@thekickanoragm8559 I find this channel interesting not because it covers topics I'm unfamiliar with or leads me to discover eras about which I don't already have a notion. What I find intriguing about this channel is that it offers a perspective rarely seen among historians nowadays, particularly from a Western point of view. Currently, viewing history from a religious perspective within the historian community is not very common, and even rarer from a Catholic viewpoint. Most historians in English-speaking countries or in Europe who approach history from a religious standpoint tend to do so from a Protestant perspective. The history recounted in Protestant countries is also heavily influenced by the propaganda exercised by them throughout history, and the same history from a Catholic perspective remains less known. However, history cannot and should not be disguised. History must be treated from an objective standpoint, and this can only be achieved through consulting historical archives and various contemporary sources. It should not be constructed based on personal beliefs, which is something many historians attempt to do nowadays by imposing current morals on past eras.

@@1685Violin I haven't seen his video response to PaxTube, but I know that individual, and I have no respect for him. I know him from a series of posts he made on Twitter, where he made outrageous claims about the conquest of America in response to a video game that allowed players to choose between playing as Native Americans or Spanish conquistadors. In these statements he made, verbatim, he said, "If you support the Spanish conquistadors, you are genuinely evil." And he made two other completely historically inaccurate claims. He said the Spanish conquest killed so many people that it changed the world's climate. And he also claimed that the Spaniards created modern racism. Right now, you can't find those comments he made since his Twitter account has been suspended. However, in that post, I wrote an extensive thread pointing out the errors he had made and criticizing his claim of being a historian, because you cannot be a historian and make such statements without being humiliated. Because a historian relies on historical facts, and a historian cannot make such subjective and erroneous statements about history. It's incredible how you can call yourself a historian and claim that the Spaniards created modern racism, or present the conquest of America as a genocide. First of all, the main cause of death among Native Americans was a virus that didn't exist in America but did in Europe, and it would have inevitably arrived there, whether the Spaniards arrived first or any other European country later. Then, how can you present the Spaniards as creators of modern racism if you consider such important historical facts as the creation of laws by Queen Isabella of Castile for the natives, something never seen before in a similar conquest? It was indeed an unprecedented conquest, with the aim of converting the natives to Catholicism, in which they were not tolerant, but it also sought to protect the native population. All of this must be understood in the context of the 16th century. How can you present the Spaniards as creators of modern racism, when after this law created by Isabella of Castile, you have Charles I of Spain and V of Germany slowing down the conquest until he was certain it was moral and that Isabella's law, which he slightly adjusted, would be upheld? How can you, proclaiming yourself as a historian, ignore the intellectual movement that emerged from the University of Salamanca in 16th-century Spain and the Catholic movement of the Jesuits, also created in Spain, which stated that people educated under the same values and system were equally capable? This idea is presented, among others, by Juan de Acosta in the context of the 16th century. In comparison, for example, we have David Hume, a British philosopher from the 18th century, two centuries later, who spoke about the superiority of the white race. Then, this historian made such a statement, disregarding all these facts that, as a historian, you cannot overlook, but he did, in order to present his narrative of oppressed and oppressors. Obviously, history cannot be painted in any single color, neither in black, as the history of Spain has been portrayed, nor in pink, as some sectors in Spain have tried to paint the entire conquest of America as if it were something marvelous or perfect, which is not the case either. It cannot be denied that some Spanish soldiers and envoys to America committed atrocities there as individuals, because they were ultimately disobeying the highest authorities of the Spanish Empire, which were the monarchs. Therefore, it was not something instigated by the Spanish authorities. These abuses that occurred at certain moments, in certain territories of America by some Spaniards, were isolated incidents and were not endorsed by the Spanish authority. And is there any better proof of this than to verify how Spaniards themselves wrote about these abuses carried out by individuals or Spaniards sent to America? Is there a better proof that they were denouncing the failure to comply with orders at certain times and by certain groups of people on behalf of the Spanish monarchs? It's incredible how, as a historian, you can ignore these facts. Fredda didn't understand anything. He completely ignored that the Spanish Empire, like the Roman Empire, didn't simply aim to exploit the resources of America to enrich the Iberian Peninsula. In fact, during the Viceroyalty period, cities like Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Lima, etc., were much more prosperous than any city in the Iberian Peninsula, and the standard of living was better. Also, during the Viceroyalty period, life in Spanish America was much better than in the rest of America, controlled by other European empires, and the cities were more prosperous. Spain built cities in America similar to Spanish cities, with their squares, churches, schools, and established a large number of universities. Spain shared all the technology it possessed with the conquered lands, their language and their faith. It also cannot be denied that a lot of Spaniards married Native American women. This may seem like a minor fact, but it is not, because as I have already pointed out, the mentality of the Spaniards was not racial; there was no racial discrimination. Therefore, you cannot make the declaration that Spain created modern racism when a lot of Spaniards married Native American women. Considering that the Spaniards who went to America were a great minority, a small number, you cannot ignore the fact that if Spain could conquer America and defeat the empires that existed there, it was thanks to the support of all the tribes suffering from oppression under these empires. You also cannot overlook the fact that the Spaniards were seen, both by tribes and inhabitants of existing empires, as gods due to the ignorance that existed in pre-Columbian America. Therefore, you cannot make those kinds of statements. I asked Fredda what he thought about the Aztec Empire, what he thought about their practice of hunting humans for use as sacrifices to their gods. For instance, the Aztec god Tlaloc, the god of rain, demanded the sacrifice of infants under one year old. Several gods in the Aztec Empire required the hearts of the sacrificial victims to be ripped out while they were still alive. Cannibalism was commonplace. There were numerous ritual sacrifices performed each year, and according to Mexican historians, it's estimated that there were around 40,000 human sacrifices annually. You cannot make those barbaric statements about the Spaniards while ignoring the fact that the Spaniards put an end to one of the most monstrous societies in the history of humanity, based on historical facts. I apologize for the lengthy response without directly addressing your question. I will watch Fredda's video responses to PaxTube about the Crusades. However, based on what I know about his historical knowledge and his approach to history, I consider him to be a mediocre historian, an incapable historian. I expressed this to him directly in a comment thread, and although he never responded to my comments, many people, including those who shared his ideas, supported my viewpoint and asked him to respond. That is my current opinion of him. As I mentioned, I will take the time to watch his videos on the Crusades, and if you're interested, I will share my opinion on them as a historian, though I'm not sure if I'll remember to do so. I hope this gives you an idea of my thoughts about this individual.

A funny story about the Inquisition: the Church established what were called Ecclesial jails for those who were accused of heresy, and these jails were well known for treating the prisoners incredibly well. So much so that there are multiple accounts of prisoners in secular jails intentionally blaspheming in order to be accused of heresy and moved to the Ecclesial jails where they’d be treated better.

There is, also, a """catholic"""" doctrine very popular in Brazil called "Teologia da Libertação". The TL is literally a mix of Marxism with the Catholic Teology, and our current president is a follower of this heresy. This has been a great issue and many priests (like Padre Paulo Ricardo) have already denounced this many times. Also, protestant churches (such as the Universal Church) lobby the governent to gain concessions and power. Oh yes, there's the issue of the lack of attendence to Church services (only 10% of the catholics attend church services in a weekly basis) Fortunelly, where i live (a small city in Santa Catarina) people are, still, very loyal to the catholic faith, as are most of the small cities in almost all states. I did my history thesis on the use of torture in witchcraft trials in Early Modern Europe with a focus on a primary text written by a 17-century French legal scholar. Torture was entirely unnecessary as a punishment once it had already been used to elicit the desired confession. At that point the penalty was death. The very fact that torture was used to prove the elements of a crime such as witchcraft, which necessarily presumed all manner of supernatural causes and effects, undermines the whole notion that the evidence being procured in such trials ever approached the high level of proof demanded today by modern Western jurisprudence.
@fedevida19516 ай бұрын
You might be interested in the role that the inquisitor Alonso de Salazar y Frías had in the end of the witch hunt in Spain. In 1613, after a rather horrible case, that of the Zugarramurdi witches, he carried out an investigation into the interrogations of said case and came to the conclusion that witchcraft was, in reality, a mixture of ignorance, mental problems and feuds between neighbors. Since then, complaints of witchcraft were normally despised in Spain.
@cbtam43336 ай бұрын
@@fedevida1951 That IS interesting. That inquisitor was pursuing justice as rationally as possible under the legal system as it then existed. Circumstantial evidence tended to be seen as insufficient in capital cases in civil law countries at the time as compared to confessions and eyewitness testimony which were considered the most solid kinds of evidence. Since eyewitnesses were pretty hard to come by in witchcraft cases, and since there was then an extreme fear of supernatural malevolent activity, the demand for confessions was high, and torture helped produce the results that were seen by many as necessary to public safety. Thankfully by the time of the Salem witch trials in New England in the early 17th century, much of the clamor in Europe for trying witches was dying down.

Though I am Catholic reading Henry Kamen's ""The Spanish Inquisition" was a revelation to me. I had actually read criticism of Kamen's work on the subject by Richard Kagan prior to doing so. While Kagan's critique still qualifies my views on the subject, in general it is not difficult to conclude that the Inquisition was a legitimate institution in the context of the societies where it was established that functioned scrupulously relative to just about any secular system of justice. Moreover, the struggle to strengthen and sustain Christendom of which it was a part never employed the excesses of arbitrary force, or repression of freedom which modern secular ideological states have. I think that it compares favorably even to the actions of more open and pluralistic states seeking to prevent subversion and treason. Perhaps that is why the struggle failed, though I don't think that is a very Christian conclusion. The comparisons made to the excesses of the French Revolution and the modern willingness to kill certain categories of human beings without compunction are most apt. Finally, it might also be worth pointing out that societies where the Inquisition was established seldom experienced witch trials or executions. Examination of the manuals referenced in this video makes it clear why this was so: Inquisitors were taught to be skeptical of accusations of witchcraft or that conduct described as witchcraft was as serious a matter as people are--even today--inclined to believe.

Most 'victims' were let off with a fine or even acquitted. Many Inquisitors were using it to fill their pockets by robbing the accused. The Pol Pot Inquisition took place during my lifetime. nobody got a fair trial, 1.7 million were executed, usually by being beaten to death with a shovel or club to save bullets. Pol Pot was a Paris educated atheist. His Inquisition killed a Spanish Inquisition's worth of victims every couple of2 days for 2 years. So when atheists ask about 'The Inquisition', the appropriate response is 'Which Inquisition? The Stalin Inquisition? The Mao Zedong Inquisition? The Pol Pot Inquisition? Oh, the SPANISH Inquisition!

The true nature of the Galileo Affair highlights the worst aspect of The Inquisition, a belief in the supremacy of dialectic. @@marvalice3455 Peer review is necessary, but I consider the entire peer review process to be a method of last resort for acquiring knowledge. If we all used peer-review as a primary means for acquiring knowledge, we'd see JSTOR dominate Yelp. Peer-review is slow, inefficient, and often downright confounding. We need it because none of us are capable of avoiding errors, and also because other people are likely to have observed things that either contradict some of what we theorize or supplement it. In the case of Galileo, his peers found isolated flaws in his arguments, and they thought these flaws were sufficient to consider Galileo's heliocentrism to be equal to certain geocentric models in spite of the far more severe flaws in those other models. Thus, had Galileo been able to break with the peer-review process of the day and start a new peer-review system, peer-review would have been greatly improved.

It was hinted at but not added. Spain was under Muslim occupation from the 7th century til the 15ty. The Spanish Inquisition starts right after the last Muslim stronghold is taken out. It would be easy in countries like Spain, France and Italy to purge dissenters as they are majority Catholic nations, but it would be more difficult for Protestant nations were you have many Christian denominations. Take the United States for instance. Since the founding of their Republic it has been a nation consisting of many Christian denominations. So if they were to get their own inquisition, they would first have to agree on which Christian branch/denomination is the one true Christianity. So which one is it?
@tafazzi-on-discord Жыл бұрын
@@redblaze8700 You're wrong. The inquisition is not parallelled by the secret police of dictatorship, it is rather more similar to what we do to flat earthers. You want to believe the earth is flat? Ok, but you can't spread that antiscientific nonsense in schools, or in books that sell themselves as "scientific", and you can't withhold the correct scientific education from your sons and daughters, even if you disagree with it. All democratic countries have systems in place to determine that books that get stuff factually wrong either don't get published or at least they don't end up in educational sections of libraries. This is how heresies ought to be treated. There is no relativism in religion just like there is no relativism in science: some facts are so consolidated that everyone that denies it can be confidently said to be wrong, with certainty, and society should act accordingly. Not by killing them, but by offering correction and most importantly hampering disinformation and misinformation. This is not an infringement of freedom of speech, because you are free to speak your mind under your own authority, but you are not free to keep your audience shielded from the correct view. Your point about "which denomination is the true christianity" is embued in the enlightenment lie that religion is inherently relative: it's not. The correct christianity is the one preached by the One Church founded by Christ in 33 AD. What that church is, and what this preaching is are matters of FACT not of opinion, so the numbers are wholly irrelevant. A good country is the one that accurately assesses the facts, not one that listens to popular mistakes. If most americans ended up flat earthers, that would not justify the state in teaching that falsehoods in school, or even allowing children to be shielded from the correct view. And now that we're at it, let's talk about it: which church is the true church and why? Is it the methodist, the baptist, the pentecostal church?
