I think you missed another important reason for the strong peso. With global tensions many companies are relocating their production facilities from China to Mexico to get their manufacturing inside a NAFTA zone country.
@TangerineTravels
@TangerineTravels 6 ай бұрын
This was my reasoning for not including it... It is true that increasing your exports strengthens your currency and it's also true that the near-shoring that's happening is contributing to increasing exports. However, despite increasing manufacturing, Mexico is still running a trade deficit during most months of the year. Because the balance of trade is still in deficit despite the near-shoring, I consider it to be one factor putting some downward pressure on the peso.
@jefffffrey
@jefffffrey 6 ай бұрын
@@TangerineTravels it's not the trade deficit necessarily because the investment doesn't immediately result in exports. Factories are literally being built.

@TangerineTravels
@TangerineTravels 6 ай бұрын
Near-shoring is a new word that's related to offshoring. Offshoring was when US companies would move their manufacturing abroad, usually to Asia. Near-shoring is bringing that manufacturing back closer to home, often to Mexico.

Are you sure spending dollars abroad weakens the dollar? I thought the whole reason the US forced other countries to use the dollar when buying oil was to increase the value of the dollar. Something about the more scarce the dollar is at home, or the less it circulates in the US, the higher the value.
@TangerineTravels
@TangerineTravels 6 ай бұрын
Yes, but it's negligible. When a country has to buy oil in dollars, they first have to buy the dollars which creates demand for dollars. And since oil is such an enormous market at north of $2 trillion per year, that creates A LOT of demand for dollars. On the other hand, if you come to Mexico from the US, and use your US credit card to make a purchase in pesos, at the moment of the purchase, the credit card company is selling dollars and buying pesos in the open market to pay the vendor their pesos. Also, if you come to Mexico and you use your US debit card to withdraw pesos from the ATM, at that moment, your bank is selling dollars and buying pesos. So why do I say it's weakening of the dollar is negligible? Because the dollar is such a huge and liquid market it takes a lot more buying or selling to move the dollar market than it does to move the peso market. Does that make sense?

Wrong! Saudi Arabia just joined the BRICS and Saudi just pulled the dollar out of their petro-dollar to buy oil. Even Rusia the largest peoducer of oil, Venezuela and the Middle East are no longer selling oil in dollars. Countries like China, India and foreign countries are buying oil in their own currency, weakening the dollar. The only reason foreign countries are doing this is to avoid sanctions from the US.

Remittances are in a vicious cycle now. Think about it: in 2020 you sent your family 6000 pesos every month at 20x1 exchange rate equaled 300 usd. Now, you have to send your family 360 usd, so they can receive the same amount of 6000 pesos a month. That is an automatic 20 percent increase in remittances to Mexico.

The people have money to spend, more jobs,the federal government is spending a lot on infrastructure.If this trend continues on the next administration the peso will gain in value. In the near future México Will stop selling it's oil to the USA,and buying gasoline.

Let's poke holes on your three reasons. 1. Higher yield. If this were true and venezuela, argentina, turkey would all have strong currencies as their pain much much higher rates. BUT That is not happening because they're currencing are collapsing. 2. Remittances This is nothing new to Mexico. This has been going on forever. However, lately, migration to the united states is at zero and trending towards a negative. Increase in wages in the united states may have more to do with increase and remittances than migration. 3. Digital nomads. Bro come on seriously digital nomads. If Mexico is getting so expensive to live in, why don't they go? It'll be vietnam, bali This was quite frankly. This doesn't make sense unless you give us actual numbers of digital nomads. And how much money they're making so that we can get an idea of their economic impact. Remember Mexico has the 10th largest economy in the world. Read the book by P Zeihan THE END OF THE WORD IS JUST THE BEGINNING. Hint deglobalisation = near shoring

I will give you 2 more. One is there is more poor people, so they demand less dollars or products that require dollars to be brought to Mexico. The other is an expansion in what people in the US send to Mexico. A lot of the increase is drug money laundering. In the old days the money american drug users paid to dealers would be brought to Mexico in suitcases. Banks took it, counted it and deposited it. A friend of my mom worked in a bank and her job was to count dollars packed in 10 or 15 suitcases each day. Then banking laws were changed and that stopped. They way they do it now is by paying an american (or legal resident or an immigrant able to send money) a % of the money sent to someone in Mexico who gets another % for receiving the money converted to clean pesos and giving it to the drug cartel.

I have a problem with the admittance becouse dallors also go into Mexico from Americans who live In Mexico and retired Americans who live in Mexico and other foreigners, like Canadiens and Europeans, the U.S. dollar is sent to Mexico for Americans retired in Mexico, that's also remittance, an Americans has to contact the U.S. embassy for the paperwork to have there S.S. and retirement funds electronic transferred from the U.S. to a Mexican bank account, deep in Mexico for where they live for there deposits, those Americans can be counted becouse there is a paper trail with the U.S. consulate counted by the embassy, an American cant just open a bank account without the paperwork, image all the hiding money and tax evasion, so the banks and financial instructions work together on that, lots of Americans who live in Mexican border cities are earning dollars in the U.S, that's why the border wait is long, what is counted and what is not counted, its not just a Mexican citizen that send remittances to Mexico, report say numbers like there's 1.5 million Americans living in Mexico, that can be counted becouse of the embassy, most American living in border city's are not registered with the U.S. embassy, there has to be at lease double that population of American and also other migrants form other countries living in the republic of Mexico and in those border cities today, few Mexicans are crossing the border illegally to work, there's lots of remote work online and lots of jobs in Mexico, they can make jobs, lots of entrepreneurs in Mexico, a taco stand, venders, even a shoe shining work for themselves, there's remittances coming from different sources not just from some so-called illegal alien working in the U.S. and sending money back to there families in Mexico, Americans and legal aliens (green cards) also send money to Mexico for different reasons back to Mexico, Mexican citizens who live in Mexico legally, green cards holders, American citizens and other migrants like from Canada and Europeans and the U.S. for S.S. retirement and pensions Mexicans working in The U.S. is not going to collapse Mexico for know remittance there's a lot more to Mexico then remittances what is your response to this?

Gotta say though, the number one way to save when the peso rises is to live simpler. Downsize in various ways, choose less ostentatious lodging/housing, eat more street food and home food prep, bus and colectivo travel instead of car rental or flying, more walking and biking rather than paying for taxis, less alcohol consumption(good for you too!) and enjoying more of the simple pleasures rather than more expensive entertainment options. Follow the lead of the Mexicans themselves, live more like a local and less like an overconsuming gringo :) PS. Oh, and the south of the country is still so much more affordable (and fascinating) than say, Querétaro or the usual ex-pat enclaves. I love spending my time in the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Campeche and Yucatán. Way easier to learn/improve one's Spanish there too!

I recently got back from a few months in Merida and didn't find it any cheaper than Alicante, Spain - a major European beach-holiday destination with virtually no crime-related safety concerns. Having done a bit of research looking at rentals (not airbnbs) in various Mexican cities (Queretaro, Puebla, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes), you seem to be looking at 10k pesos minimum for something decent and modern. That's currently 600 dollars, and that's not including energy, water, internet.

The peso gets stronger, but many products, including groceries, (tuna cans, for example) are indexed to $20 for 1 dollar. So the super peso causes inflation in Mexico by itself! It's ridiculous. // I know because I use a US card in Mexico and many fees and products are charged at $1.15, $1.20, and they keep going up. They were indexed to $20 for 1 dollar, but they don't lower the dollar to $18, $17, etc. Someone is stealing the difference, and it's not the general consumer who benefits. My tuna can used to be $1 in my US card, now they are $1.20. In NYC you can get a tuna can for $0.80. So that makes Mexico more and more expensive.

Yet in the real world, just like the dollar, Mexican inflation has been dropping a lot in the past couple years. And over the past year, the Mexican peso has gotten stronger relative to the US dollar (re the exchange rate), so the strengthening is outpacing the inflation, at least relative to the US dollar. (On the internet, it's EASY to look things up with a variety of credible sources, vs. guessing.)

Although I am quite sure these are a few reasons! The main reason the peso is getting stronger against the U.S. dollar is due to inflation! This is caused by the U.S. Government is continuing to print dollars which lowers the value of the Dollar!

That's certainly causing inflation in the US but Mexico is doing the same thing which is also causing inflation in Mexico. Similar to the US central bank, the Mexican central bank has doubled the supply of pesos in the past 5 years.

Everything has cycles. I was just talking to a local yesterday and a lot of ppl in TJ are expected to pay in USD, rather than pesos for rents, for example. So They are definitely feeling the pain, far worst than Xpats. I suspect a hard correction will be coming soon, as Mexico is getting too expensive to justify the logistics of going/stating. It’s still cheaper, but when all things are considered, I think a some ppl might not want to be bothered.

@rodrigodiaz1321 mexicans aways fail to see the future! Chinese see great opportunities in mexican and have plans running! Unlike mexicans that fail to see this and question why the peso is getting stronger! Canadians seen this great opportunity bak in 2015 from my research. There are many factors that contribute to not been able to the potential mexico has when you are constantly worrying about daily life tbh. While mexican society is rich and beautiful, they have the idea of colonial mindset, about similar as afro American victim mindset. I will say that mexicans can get out of problems and continue life like nothing happened. In conclusion, mexico is the wild west, survival of the strongest and influential figures! Social status determines you position in life. While in the United States is similar, the United States is more diverse, and we have learned to not judge a book by its cover, discrimination is les pronounced, unless there an emotional connection with a certain group política or based on life experience.

Double tax income? Crazy!! It’s like if you sent your mom or relatives money to another country, let’s say you work in the USA and your mom lives in Portugal and you send her a monthly 500 dollars to supplement her living, so your taxed income will be taxed again as steeply as your income just to send it to your mom and let’s not forget that there are always transferring fees. You can’t think clearly or refuse to think clearly, you also think that the millions of citizens sending money don’t pay income taxes. You smell like a racist

With respect, the dollar overall, re the DXY, has been rather flat for years. Yes, it moves around a bit in the short term, but over time it has been staying quite flat over time the past two years, and has risen a little over the past five. So the issue is the Mexican Peso being strong relative to global currencies overall, NOT just the USD. So to me, your recommendation to buy an international fund as a hedge against the rising peso makes little sense. It seems to me it would make FAR more sense to buy Mexican bonds or opening a Mexican bank account paying the high interest rates you cite, AND reaping the gains in the Mexican Peso, if you expect those to continue. The main issue there is if those are safe / insured, and I freely admit I don't know. But if you're going to be giving advice re Mexican living, YOU should know or be able to find out.

Their free cash flow has gone up, their debt has gone down, their cash holdings have increased, and their net asset value has increased. In fairness, most of them were probably priced too high a couple of years ago but this is a circumstance where you have a chance to buy very high quality companies which are run by great people at a deep discount.
