I’d like to formally confirm that the Trevor Jones rumours are true - he is the nicest, most humble and gracious KZbinr you will ever meet. Thanks so much for making the huge effort to come down and present at Star Stuff III - that was the most epic weekend I’ve had in a long time! Lots of love from our family to yours. ❤

One of the most amszing experiences I've had was yachting in the Whitsunday Islands. We were at anchor in the southern section well away from the resorts in the northern section. One night I went up on deck and the water was mirror smooth. At first I thought the rather pretty reflection was the moon. Then I realised there was no moon visible. It was actually the reflection of the milky way. The detail visible was stunning.

The best night sky view I've ever gotten was from the Bunda Cliffs (half-way across the Nullarbor plain, on the cliffs bordering the Great Australian Bight. Zero light pollution (hundreds of kilometers from anyone, and crystal-clear air blowing directly from Antarctica and the Southern Ocean). Best of all perhaps, it's dead flat in every direction, not even a tree to break the effect of the sky being a giant, solid dome, plunging vertically all the way to the uninterrupted 360 degree horizon...

Hope you enjoyed your time down under with us Aussies and glad you got some epic shots of our Southern skies. Although it's a long flight, I always tell my friends that are in the US and UK, mate it's a day away, so what. It can take you more than a day to get from NY to LA in some cases. I'm sure all the Aussies will tell you that we actually like being a little bit isolated, it makes us somewhat unique, but we've got our close Kiwi buddies next door which is also a beautiful part of the world.

Hi Trevor, glad you had a nice trip. Regarding the permits, anyone can take pictures of Uluru, but if you were to reproduce images (to sell) or to show on KZbin, you need a permit. Easy to get and cheap as well. However the permits are to protect the Indigenous people living on the other side of Uluru. Basically, when young boys have their coming of age, they are taken to the northern face of the rock for a ceremony. Before this, they are strictly NOT allowed to see the northern face and so the permits are to ensure that the reproduced copies do not show the small section in the northern face. It is basically to protect the young youth from accidentally seeing the northern face of the rock online. Hope it clears up things. Ps. You can still apply for a permit after you have visited Uluru and show your footage once you receive it (should take under a week). Just make sure in your application, you say that your footage is of the southern face only.
@AstroBackyard

My husband has just done a very remote ‘raid’ for 8 weeks circum-navigating Australia nearly all off-road. He went across the Simpson desert and camped each night. His photo of the Milky Way above his tent each night was just absolutely stunning. I wasn’t jealous of the rough trip but I was jealous of the stargazing. The stars in Tassie are pretty magic too -particularly in the middle of the state where is hardly any light pollution

The skies of the southern hemisphere are truly exceptional. We boast the biggest and brightest globular clusters, open clusters, the Milky Way, and stunning nebulae. While we might not excel in galaxies observations, we more than make up for it with two unique celestial wonders: the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The only category i found that we truly lack, is meteor showers. Greetings from argentina!

When I started out in the late 1980s the books I read were northern hemisphere based so I felt left out... It took me a while to realize that here in Sydney, the southern night sky is probably the more stunning. A few stunners, all naked eye objects, are Omega Centauri, the Milky Way's most massive globular cluster, 47-Tucanae, a globular that dwarfs and outshines northern jewel M13, and the two Clouds of Magellan, our two 'closest' galaxies, orbiting the Milky Way :-)

Just before you took this trip I was thinking about traveling to Australia during the "NoAstroDarkness-time" for nearly three months where I live (Norway - above 60'' north). I have part of the family tree living "down under", which is just another reason to take the trip. Did take a trip to Naxos - Greece (37'' North) late May/early June to try out taking images of the Milky Way. Here the core is fairly high in the southern skies in the night at that time of the year, and I got really nice images from a Bortle 2-3 site.

Some times I take the Southern sky for granted living in Australia. The Milky Way core and the nebulae the extend south of it are all right there for us. Add into that other gems like the Magellanic clouds, star clusters like Alpha Centauri and 47 Tucanae, and galaxies like the Southern Spiral and Centaurus A are breathtaking. I normally find a dark sky over the next month or 2 to do some core shots. Even 30 seconds at 17mm on a full frame on a static mount can get you some stunning results.

From one Trevor to another....manual polar aligning to the south celestial pole via Sigma Octantis is easy peasy. I do it in minutes, sometimes less than a minute if my initial estimate is a good one. What you need is a laser pointer and good knowledge of where SO is the night sky with your naked eye. I do use an original model iOptron SkyTracker which has a one inch diameter slot intended for the removeable polar scope that just happens to be perfect for a cheap 1MW laser pointer. This is pretty much what makes it so easy for me to align, so other trackers may not be able to be used in this way. I do know the pro version can. All you need to do is secure the laser into the slot and turn it on and you'll see exactly where it is pointing in the sky, make your adjustments to have it pointing roughly where SO is, remove the pointer and attach the scope and almost every time you'll see SO through the scope. Again, so long as you know where it is because you won't be able to see it with the naked eye, it's too faint, but the magnification of the scope will let you see it clearly. Then use your app to find exactly where you need to place the star within the reticle inside the scope and you're done.

What an honour to have you visit DownUnder. Whilst you are lucky to have Polaris to align on, I think we more then make up for it with our rich Southern skies; Omega Cent, 47 Tucana, NCG5128, Magellanic clouds, Tarantula, Jewel Box, Coal Sack etc. (seasons permitting), just lay down on a recliner and soak it all in with 7x50 Bino's...

Just took my first Northern Hemisphere Adventurer pix. What a bloody doddle polar alignment is!!!!!! None of that spending sodding hours trying to find that invisible Octans nonsense like in Oz. Real joy and lots of galaxies! (But the Milky Way? Pah!!!)

I live in australia and just read the entire document regarding the use of images of uluru. It totally feels like a money grab by those running the place. I couldn't find anywhere what the fines applicable for using the images without their permission are, it feel more like you will just hurt our feelings if you don't pay us first, once you pay all is good. Either pay the $20 and get the licence and publish you images (I would do this just to be nice), Or publish them anyway, you aren't getting sent a fine or anything anyway. Great video by the way, we are pretty lucky here with out night scapes.

It is worse than a money grab, though - isn't it? It divides Australians - and Canadians, and all others - into two groups. Those who "own" the most beautiful parts of this country based on their "race" and those who don't. It's not just Ayers Rock. A member of NSW parliament faces a $3,000 fine for climbing Mt Warning last week - which has been, until now, a fantastic place for a bush walk. No-one but those who identify as being of a particular race are allowed on the Glasshouse mountains in Qld now either, which have been until now the best climbing location in the country. To be clear, these are not "reservations" or tribal land. They're parts of the country which until now belonged to all Australians, and were open to the whole world. Being sensitive to issues of culture and colonialism is ok. But defining any human being on racial grounds and then enforcing what he or she is allowed to do based on this is a terrible dark path we're walking down at present. I know it's a world-wide phenomenon - but Australia has it bad. Really interesting video, thanks - but this gets me seeing red.

@@rosiekickett2617 but like us they're still humans thinking they can lay claim to natural landmarks. I don't care what your race is, what colour your skin is, no human should lay claim to a natural landmark and try and dictate to others who can and cannot visit there (respectfully of course) at any time

Where I live in Oz, I'm further north than Uluru, I can see most of what you get in the Nth Hem', except for stuff north of 71N. So, I don't miss out on much. But, I get all that Milky Way goodness😊😊 I don't have to go all that far from home to see everything crystal clear and bright in the sky. Yep, we've got pretty good skies Down Under! If you want them, we can rent them to you, but it's gonna cost!!!😆😝
