Why the Neck Knife?

The more experience with knives I get the more the techniques have improved and I just feel comfortable with a small 3 inch blade and carry it as a neck knife. Thank you for the great vid

I use neck knives they are a great carry option for the reasons you describe. Cody Lundin from Dual survival wears a neck knife so do the Scandinavian people for easy access in cold weather with heavy clothing.

The older I get, the shorter & slimmer the knives I want to carry. Bringing a 6"-8" saw also makes life easier in summer. The axe and larger saw are only needed in winter!

Knife carry was once an essential trait of men. In my village, every grown up man would carry a gun, a knife and a flash light till 90's. However, the younger generation doesnt like knives just as they do not have appreciation for mechanical watches and big harleys.

I always wear the neck knife. Everyday and all day. I hated it at first- Arizona gets hot and I don't always have a shirt to tuck it into. So I adjusted my clothing. If I don't want sleeves, even short sleeves, I wear a moisture wicking under shirt so it's not against bear skin and I still stay cool. Weather was always the deciding factor with my neck knife. I wear the tracker t4 as my neck knife. It's kinda heavy for a little guy. I just wore it enough to become so used to it that I feel naked and insecure without it. The time it took to acclimate to the feel was worth the utility of having it at all times. If I take my son to the park, I take my big fixed blade off my belt, but my t4 is always there and the parents don't take their kids off to another park in a hurry because my big knife is on my belt. My son gets to play with other kids.

In the 80s I bought a "Rambo" knife for survival prepping. The few times I actually brought it into the woods I always brought a Mora as well that I ended up using.

I enjoy carrying a small neck knife. I usually carry a bigger 4 to 5 inch fixed blade on my belt. Great video brother. 👍

I take both. Belt knife as the principal knife, and a neck knife as a back up, under the shirt.

Yeah, neck-knife first, then a knife in a pack. One has to be flat ground, and the other is usually a scandi.

I'm glad that works for you. I'd find it annoying, particularly in summer when I'm down to a tank top. I'll stick with my folded knife in my belt pouch. It has a built-in ferro rod and a whistle. I've had it for about 15 years, and it does everything I need it to do.

You gotta go with what works. I've never worn a tank top while traipsing through the deep woods. I agree - it's more of a cool weather thing. In July and Aug, when I'm fishing off the shore in the ocean I don't wear a neck knife - and I generally don't go in the woods during those months because the flies are murderous.

@@outdoorsonthecheap, I keep my Deep Woods with me when I'm in the woods in the summer, but I don't find the bugs too bad, not compared to the 70s and 80s when we'd be eaten alive and carried off by blackflies. While I go all over the province, my usual spot is the Eastern Shore. Of all the travelling I'd done this summer, I didn't get one tick on me. I was surprised.

Ha! I use a retractable box knife on paracord around my neck because the last few years I started wearing leggings--no pockets. Always used a pocket jack knife before that.

Em kinda on the fence about neck knives tbh ,i always have a lockback on my belt and a smaller lock back in a sheath attached to a lanyard attached to a belt key ring ,i do carry some form of sheath knife on my belt or pistol belt ,but my sheath knife or large general purpose blade often rides in a pack ,ill mention im mostly in mountaineous terraine fell one time and dropped 8 or ten ft down the side of the mountain in wooded steep teraine in the dark id traveled provably close to a mile befor i realisedy home made sheath knife had cut right out of the sheayh and was lost could have been a fatal fall but lucky for me it wasnt but it reallyade me think about potential falls and if a blade could be fell on a neck knife could at the least hurt you if it turned when your falling down a mountain or other steep area especially at night ,for me that was another strike against using neck knives much in the mountains

Sounds like you've never tried it. Everything you are saying made sense to me before I tried a neck knife. Once I switched, it was so convenient I never went back. Also - I think the bigger risk is travelling in any rough terrain at night.

I don't have any links :) I have a mora knife, a suunto compass and a silky saw - that's my main gear. I'd say look on ebay to get a deal.
