I'm both Old Rite and Old Calendar. I wouldn't particularly want it any other way. It was a tragedy that it ever ended up with different churches on different calendars. I don't judge people personally for what calendar they are on but I cannot bring myself to attend any church or parish that follows the new. Us Orthodox have sanctified time using the venerable Julian Calendar for centuries, and we've dated the year from the creation as well. One thing I love about the old calendar is that it sits just a little outside the wheel of the secular and civil year. It's a reminder that we as Christians must live a little out of step with the society we find ourselves, and must not fully adapt to its rhythms. Another thing someone else mentioned that I've noticed is that the new calendar is often associated with more liberal characters. Changing the calendar was the first step in-- for lack of better terms- -pissing away our patrimony. For all you guys thinking of making the switch, just do it. It'll get easier in time. A blessed Theophany to all my Old Calendar brothers.

Do you attend an Old Rite parish or practice the Old Rite privately? If you attend an Old Rite parish, is it in communion with the canonical Church? I have always found the Old Rite to be beautiful, and I am sad at how it has faded away, and how the Church treated the Old Believers, yet I'm horrified at how the schismatics have fractured among themselves and changed their own beliefs while trying to avoid change. The concept of practicing the Old Rite canonically is really interesting to me.

There are 2 canonical parishes in the United States, one in Erie under ROCOR, and another in Pennsylvania (I forget where) under Moscow Patriarchal Parishes of the USA. There are entire communities in Russia in communion with the canonical Church. It's very uncommon. But I've seen an increasing interest in Old Rite practices in ROCOR. I went to a parish in Virginia where multiple people had Lestovkas. I talked to a hierarch who loves the Old Rite Prayer book from Erie. That's why I asked if this person had a blessing to practice an Old Rite prayer rule on their own or if they actually attended an Old Rite parish.

What I understand is that we look at equinox which is astronomical event in nature, after that we wait for fool moon and on Sunday after that we have Easter. Old calendar as well as the new one are Solar calendars and need to be adjusted over time. In few thousand years we will have Easter on summer if we keep looking at the old calendar… Correct me if I am missing something…

We will eventually revert to the OC. Most people actually love it. My family is finding itself observing 2 Xmas dates already. We just cannot ignore the OC nativity date. I wouldn't go out of my way though to be out of sync with my parish. I have no commitments to the new calendar either.

Here are reasons for the Church Julian Calendar: 1. As icons sanctify matter, and temples sanctify spaces, so the Calendar sanctifies time. 2. Sanctified time continues from the original Resurrection of Christ (Pascha) to the final Resurrection of all the dead on the Lord's Day of his Coming. 3. When Christ comes on that final Day of the Lord, his glory will fill the earth obscuring the sun and stars, and there will be no more cycles of day and night and seasons. 4. The monthly dates of the Christian saints and feasts should have the Lord of the Pascha at their centre like a holy dance keeping in rhythm with Christ's original Pascha at their centre. 5. The original date of Christ's death and resurrection, with respect to the dates and the sun and the moon of that time, is contained within the 532 dates of the paschalion. 6. We should keep time by preserving the exact original date of Pascha as the centre of the calendar, rather than keep time according to the physical sun and moon, whose cycles do not perfectly match the revolving of the earth each day. 7. The new Calendar does the cycle of the days of the month on a different cycle from the original Pascha, meaning that the new Calendar does not cycle around the Lord of Pascha as the centre of sanctified time. 8. The new Calendar is following secular time until it leads to the Anti-Christ, while the Church Calendar cycles around the Resurrection of Christ until he returns in the Day of the Lord. 9. The Church Calendar perfectly preserves the exact original date of Christ's Resurrection, whereas no calendar can fix the spring and the autumn equinoxes on a specific date. 10. The Church Calendar is exact in preserving Pascha while the new Calendar is inaccurate in preserving the equinoxes. 11. What is sanctified time but the cycle of the years around the original Pascha of the Lord, rather than trying to follow the physical sun and moon each year to fix the physical seasons? 12. Like two dancing circles the Church Calendar and the new Calendar will slowly move apart out of one more step every century not divisible exactly by four: the one following Christ's Resurrection until his return, and the other trying to keep up with and failing to follow the physical sun until the Anti-Christ changes the calendar again. Who is the Life-giver: the physical sun (the Lake of Fire) or the risen Sun of Righteousness (the King of Glory)? The Calendar is an icon portraying in time what one believes about this answer.

Completely pointless other than to cause confusion. I detest two calendars, and the fact that it turns out to have been the work of a Freemason figures. Also the fact that the Holy fire and mount Athos are old cal. And the fact you pointed out about the inconsistency should be the end of the issue. If it ain't broke don't fix it go back to the old. I know that-presently-in the Patriarchite of Constaninople,there are Ukranian Churches (here in Canada;at least) that still follow the Julian Calendar.That means that--hypothetically--a certain number of Orthodox churches all over the Western Hemisphere (and in other countries of the world where Orthodox Christians are-presently-not in the majority) under the Jurisdiction of the Patriarchites of Antioch,and of Alexandria,and of Romania,and of Bulgaria.....could/should.....also follow the Julian Calendar.....

I am not sure if you realize this because obviously I do not know you personally but if you have ever been both new calendar and old calendar the most obvious difference between both churches is that the old calendar actually goes through the prayers in its entirely. Examples being Sunday service, weddings , all the saints individually and together. as well as funerals and the most importantly baptisms. When going and attending a new calendar Church you will realize that ,church does start a bit later than the old calendar Church . New calender Sunday service is over a lot , where is Church in the old calendar services must start from I believe 6 a.m. and usually over and that is including the priests sermon by 12 to 12:30 p.m. I have been old calendar my entire existence and I'm a very open-minded person I consider myself a realist . I feel in my heart as long as we respect the Ten Commandments ,which I don't see that impossible to do whats so ever. Whether you are a Baptist, Muslim, non-denominational, Foreigner, Middle Eastern, American, Etc. I believe these are laws of human nature ,anybody and everyone can adapt to these Commandments . I never felt that the Commandments were made only for one religion or race, and or ethnicity. They were made for every religion .As Long As You Are a Human Being these are the laws to obey. Last thing I want to say cuz I don't want to take a lot of your time but the baptism in each religion that I have noticed between old calendar, new calendar, Catholics, and non denominational and Etc are all performed differently. If you ever take the time to look each and every one up you will notice that the prayers (and even when translated )are not as long or as accurate then the old calendar. When the child is submerged under water with the old calendar you noticed that new calendar, Catholics and non-denominational all performed that part differently. Some sprinkle water above the head ,some only dip the child or adult until the neck down is submerged in the water, and then some just do a spiritual reading and that is it. Just do what the Fathers of Nicea said to do: Pascha is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Full moons and equinoxes are real events that can be seen by looking at the sky. If the Fathers of Nicea wanted us to make use of the moon and the sun, why should we do otherwise?

David, a funny thought I had, since I am learning more about these different "true Orthodox" groups. One such church was very near me and I mistook them for Mainline Orthodox....but thought....even if we could go back to the Old Calendar...if I am not mistaken....some of these "fake Orthodox" as you say, have developed slightly new doctrines.....I am thinking of the Russian branch from Siberia? ... My question, is how many of them would return to unity? And furthermore, could there be more than one way in which they could do that. Could they be offered some kind of "social" independence for their more unique practices as long as they agreed to Main Orthodox Bishop in an Orthodox jurisdiction? How would that work out?

I disagree, but I'm Greek after all, I do agree there is a problem, to eliminate this we should all go to the new calendar and that includes Pasxa. If one uses the new calendar uses it consistently or not at all. Also using the new calendar provides an alternative place to pray for those who are trying to get back to the true faith, It may not sound right, but what I mean by that is it will make it easier when trying to convert someone baptised in the western church to orthodoxy. @@adrianwhyatt1425 Unfortunately you're promoting pro Russian propaganda, the new calendar has been adopted by the oldest patriarch churches of the orthodox faith, that of Constantinople, Alexandria and Antioch and the following churches around the world, including Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Japan, Romanian, all of the Americas and Asia. When these decisions were taken, the Russian church was under the control of the Soviet government and didn't participate in those decisions. You can not ignore Constantinople, the light and heart of orthodoxy. The Russian have no rights to oppose Constantinople. Now they are encroaching in Africa and elsewhere violating the rights of the other patriarchs. It seems they have become Putin's church. Who's really undermining orthodox unit.

On eve of the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross many thousands of people saw the Holy Cross above the Holy Temple -Many people came back to the true faith through this great miracle! Councils that condemn this ‘papal calendar’ are: 1) 1583 AD the first Pan-Orthodox Council against the New Calendar, 2) 1587 AD the second Council condemning the new innovation, 3) 1539 AD the third Council condemning the New Calendar. These are Pan -Orthodox; therefore binding to all who consider themselves Christians! This split started with the Greek Government and the Patriarch of Constantinople at the hands of Meletius IV (1921-1923). Might I remind you of the famous vision of our Father amongst the Saints - St John of Kronstandst - in this vision St Seraphim of Sarov reveals a number of dates - of which 1924 AD is one - the year the calendar reforms were enacted in Church of Greece. Furthermore, your bishops and priests have engaged in ecumenical prayer services - from the standpoint of the Canons: one is forbidden to pray with anyone who Is not part of the Church - however, one can pray for them! Any Hierach, priest deacon who does so is to be deposed! Also, do not forget that Saint Mark of Ephesus refused to sign the documents of the anti-Council of Florence - he stood up for Orthodoxy as much as my fathers in the faith, who stood up against the calendar-ecumanist reforms!
