Antiques expert Tim Wonnacott and chef Rosemary Shrager visit Belvoir Castle in Rutland following in the footsteps of Queen Victoria, who visited here in 1843. She was 24, had been married for nearly four years and already had three children.
Tim reveals that, when Victoria and Albert came to Belvoir, Albert's popularity rating was pretty low. Although Victoria adored him, he wasn't really liked by the public or the upper classes. So Victoria's advisers - the spin doctors of the day - thought that the sight of a handsome man on horseback, hunting heroically with the famous Belvoir hunt, might help boost his image.
With chef and food historian Ivan Day, Rosemary cooks a dish that would have been cooked for the whopping 1,000 people the Duke invited for dinner over the course of the three-day royal visit, hunter's beef: a hearty brisket that takes 16 days to cure. They prepare the food in the magnficent kitchen at Belvoir that is just as it would have been during HRH's stay.

Almost halfway through, and still no explanation of why Albert was hated. He was German, and not aristocratic enough is just too little and vague, when the title says the video is about why Albert was hated. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Albert was hated (or at least disapproved of) for various reasons. 1. He was a foreigner (damn Germans!) 2. He spoke with a German accent. 3. He wasn't from some major royal family. Basically, people thought he wasn't good enough for the queen.

He became very popular after the exhibition, I read somewhere that, the profits from that very successful world exhibition( i think 17millions out 25 millions members of the population at that time in England visited) was used to build arena like the Royal Albert Hall. He did a lots for the country. I am so fascinated by Victorian era, I know many bad things happened during that time too, specially in U.K. colonies however the industrial revolution alone is so impressive.

The men in Alberts family although 'middle class' were still German Royals. They had the luck of marrying well and were often called the 'Stud farm of Europe'. Princess Charlotte, (Victoria's Aunt) would have been queen but had married young and died young. Her husband was Victoria's Uncle Leopold and England had settled him with a lifetime allowance of 50,000 pounds a year. He left England but kept the money. When Albert came to be the 'Prince Consort', they decided that much money in the hands of a penniless prince would be seen as unwise as he would likely squander it. Victoria & Albert were also first cousins, something not generally mentioned. She took the crown at only 18 and they married at the age of 20 respectively. Her mother was German and spoke little English. They considered themselves saddled with German rulers and that was the deep resentment of Albert by the English. During WWII, they were still deeply German and decided to sever that tie by changing the name of the royal line to the House of Windsor. When Victoria died she was known as the "Grandmother of Europe" with ties to all of the major royal families through the marriages of her nine children and their children. FIN

I have such an affection for Albert because he was such a beloved family man but I think the consort of a Queen will always be in a difficult position because people, especially men, always feel protective of women they care about. Think of how many royal guards speak of being the personal protector of HMTQEII. I have heard interviews and you would think these men were the only ones there to personally protect and fight the world for her. So naturally their husbands will be suspect. That's just my opinion. It's well documented that Prince Philip went through the same ordeal.
