This was such a great idea that I set my QYT 8900D the same way. I live in the Hurricane belt in south east Texas so I needed a back up to my radio. Thanks for the idea

Okay so will that trickle charger prevent any spikes to the battery and or the radio? Thank you for the post. May God Bless.

Dang got a flash. Harbour freight has a 7 watt solar call. That has a stand. That will keep you on the air in a disaster. Just put a 5 amp diode in line so when the sun goes down. Mached with a garden tractor battery. Tks. kv4li

How would you power these indoors from your wall outlet? Just any cig lighter to wall adapter? Is that safe? Thanks for the video!

Quick couple questions. I just got my HAM license and I’m looking at purchasing this mobile radio from Amazon for my truck, mainly going to be used when I go off roading. I like how simple and compact the radio is and was wondering if I can power up the mobile radio exactly how you demonstrated on the video but to my truck battery? Is this a decent mobile radio to have for a beginner?

I like the idea of battery power, what is amp/hr of the battery and would you increase it if you had it to do all over again? Florida resident so backup powered system would be ideal.

I also have a qyt kt8900 dual. Programming at first was a bit confusing following the broken english manual..after some time learned the manual way. Now Im hearing that chirp software will not interface for pc programming. Bummed. I live in the mitten and travel to the desert area..looking for the oem programming software..I have a cable.

+Silentsoldier84 May work fine. give it a try. The best thing about being a Ham is you get to experiment.

at 4A on high-power transmit, that 7Ah gel cel won't last that long... good for intermittent though

Thanks for the video! What kind of operating time do you think you'll get with this radio and battery? I am looking to do the same with a 7ah or 12ah agm/acid for a little go-box setup.

Did you ever try the 7 or 12ah battery with this? If so, how long did it last?

What is the distance, on average city, can you get with that radio between two cars? Also, do you need a license to use it? I'm used to using cb radios, I'm now starting to discover these vhf and uhf radios.
@ronaldpayne59635 жыл бұрын
yes u need a license. A tech ham license not hard to acheive. Depending on many vairables, direct car to car on VHF you should be able to acheive 10-20 miles, in the country, city 5-10 miles, via a repeater 50 to 100 miles. Kind of depends on whaere you are at.

QYT KT-8900 is a piece of garbage. I bought one at amazon, they claim it is 20 watts, but barely sends out 4.82 in HIGH POWER, tried in about 8 different antennas. I sent it back. I have the feeling it is a Baofeng uv-5r

I had a TS-2000 & I found it to be a POS.The menus are beyond PATHETIC.I Hated it somuch that I Sold it for just $500 to a local friend & took a $300 loss because it SUCKED so badly.I replaced the TS-2000 with an ICOM 821H for Satellite use Only & an ICOM 910H for 2 meter & 432 SSB Only & I already had an ICOM 7600 for HF/6 meter use which blows the TS-2000 out of the water on those bands.I would not wish a TS-2000 on anyone & I even told my friend that I felt bad that he was buying it because I did not want it to ruin our friendship.I also just purchased the QYT KT-8900D for just local FM on 2 meters & 440 so some folks think I should just use the IC-910H for all of my 2 meter & 440 mhz usage & then I would have no need for the other two rigs.Well I prefer doing things MY WAY so I will continue doing them that way.

One of the poorest reviews I've seen. The "battery" is a crappy "gel cell" that has a poor life, poor recharge, high resistance to charging, and on this is a "trickle charger", that is once the power goes out, 15 minutes of high power transmit will flatten that "Gel Cell" . This is about the least deserving request for patreon I've ever seen. Its amazing what a fat microphone and video editing software will do to egos. Its as though people read up on how to make money off youtube with a patreon account and first, get video editing software and a fat microphone. Subject knowledge and ability to entertain and impart knowledge are not considerations.
