It's so interesting to come back here post David Wondrich doing his digging on the Sazerac and discovering the dude who claimed it used to be made with cognac just straight made it up for his book. Of course doesn't take away from the drink, a cognac Sazerac is delicious still

Have you ever made them split between Rye and Cognac? They are so good that way too. Btw, don't forget to check us out as a podcast too. We made the switch from video to strictly audio about a year ago, so try us out there as well. Cheers! - Erick

The title of this video were fighting words, but then he said that the only way to do a proper Sazerac is with cognac, and I couldn't agree more.

Except they have been made with rye in New Orleans for over 100 years. They aren’t even sure if they were ever actually made with cognac. Rye is by far the better choice anyway

Great episode and great cocktail references! Seriously want his recipe for the Trinidad Sour. For Cinco de Mayo I experimented with Strawberry Basil Margaritas. It's rather like a strawberry margarita and a basil gimlet had the most perfect baby. Strawberries are in season, so you can kick the sugar down just a bit. Plus the color and aroma is divine, and talk about bringing out the vegetal notes of the tequila. It was firing on all cylinders. Thanks for another amazing episode!
@BartenderAtLarge6 жыл бұрын
Just google it. The recipe is all over the internet. Its something of a modern classic. The key is however that you need a quality orgeat. - Erick Castro
@taherron6 жыл бұрын
You're very kind. I almost immediately did just that. ☺ It seems more like a fall/winter drink, so I'll wait a bit to make it. That should give me time to practice making orgeat. 👍

How the fuck can somebody know so much about cocktails, yet know so little about spirits? What he said about rye is just straight-up ignorance. Dude is a brilliant mixologist, but hot damn. Obviously there’s an immense amount of craft that goes into mixology, but the spirits are the base.
