Hello! It depends where you go. If you want to see the whole peninsula then yes, some of the roads are challenging and sometimes over (not super deep) cliffs. Lots of gravel roads which can be dangerous or just annoying cause they can damage the car so make sure you get good insurance. But if you come from Reykjavik and see half of the peninsula (up to Kirkjufell, the Arrow Mountain from Game of Thrones) and go back the same way, the roads there are fine. If you continue around it on the way to the Westfjords, then that's way more challenging of a drive and there's no escaping the difficult roads (we tried). If you're a confident driver, you should be fine. Always get a 4x4 in Iceland, that's the main thing! If you're unsure what car rental company to go for, we always use Blue Car rental.
