Niall Ferguson has created a stir by comparing the USA today to the late Soviet Union. In "We're all Soviets now" he makes the case that the US empire is at risk of imploding like the Soviet Union did in 1991. But he had misunderstood the nature of the Soviet collapse in 1991, and the history lessons it provides.
In this video I will share with you the one book you should read if you want to understand why the Soviet Union collapsed and what it means for the USA and the world today. These events in the late 1980s and early 1990s contain the seeds of the conflict in Ukraine and debate on the future of NATO.
Join me LIVE or share your comments later to discuss why the Soviet Union collapsed and what it means for the USA and the world today.

For people wanting a summary of Zubok, Collapse from the author itself I recommend this YT video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXfNgqN9jdJobKMsi=28yyf0PkXpf26mip It was done before Feb 2022 so is not overshadowed by the conflict in Ukraine like most of the later interviews.

Except the United States isn't a multi-ethnic empire held together by military forces..... we also don't have any real seperatists movements in this country. The few that LARP about and independent Texas, California, or Hawaii have no political power, and all available data shows these "movements" can't even garner 1% support amongst the population. The only economic stagnation we've had is wage stagnation, and that can be solved by increasing wages. During Trumps coup attempt; unlike the USSR, he was not able to get any support from the military higher-ups. Unlike the military of the USSR, who swore allegiance to the communist party, the USM swears allegiance to uphold the constitution. We remain as the worlds most powerful economy, and reserve currency. Meaning that nations around the world have a vested interest in the USA not collapsing like the Soviet Union. This feels like fear mongering, and I don't appreciate a foreigner trying to convince my countrymen that the end is near.

USSR military swore to the USSR Constitution, just like the USA military et al. The people did not want to dissolve the Soviet Union, Yeltsin more or less did it unilaterally after Gorbachev tried to do it more slowly. In essence, 2.5 coups took place(first one failed because the military officers didn't want to go that hard). The military did not overthrown the Soviet Union, the military under Yanayev. went against DISSOLVING it, this more or less failed, Yeltsin comes in and more or less unilaterally dissolves the CPSU. Many nations around the world had a vested interest in the Soviet Union staying together, especially their allies like Cuba, DPRK, etc. Israel could be in a similar situation without the USA. I think the lessons are eerily applicable.

that is Zubok's message at the end of the book. No direct parallels, but each case can unwind if events combine. Especially when there is a hapless captain and a ruthless power-seeking rival. Familiar?

@@theburningarchive I think present political currents indicate we are far more likely to fall to some form of authoritarian-nationalism than societal collapse. Of course we have problems, no nation is perfect. However, I don't think there are any factors at play that couldn't be said to exist in any other western power at the moment. Americans just want the same level of security that their parents and grandparents had, very few want to see an end to the Republic.
