The problem is, you in the media try your best to make it a tumultuous week for the Labour Party, but for normal voters who aren’t politically engaged, getting the Tories out is in their mind, not this noise created by the media.

Also it wasn't particularly tumultuous in the first place, they weren't umming and ahhing over Abbott, they said almost right away she wasn't being blocked but the media kept on bsing about it all week.

The Diane Abbott ‘issue’ was never a major thing to any reasonable person. I do find it fascinating that so much of the media manages to cling onto the most menial things when it’s Labour. To real people, no one cares about this issue

Feels like some kind of hangover from Brexit 'balance' on the BBC. This incessant need to pretend balance comes from having voice heard/ stories from both sides of a debate. Regardless of the quality of insight or relevance.

Well said, Sirrah. And this meretricious abomination of a profoundly corrupt Tory government, can do absolutely anything without even being called to account. A tiny caveat here. If Rishi Sunak was filmed strangling newborn puppies, this perhaps might deter the gutter press from crusading the abhorrence that is this 14 year old Tory shitshow.

The big question here is why the media tried to turn this into such a big story. It was such a "Westminster Bubble" story - if you managed to look past the wall to wall headlines you would have noticed a complete absence of anybody else talking about it at all.

Why bother putting up numbers and suchlike? The world changes fast, and in unpredictable ways. All the media want is a stick to beat them with, and easy headlines to sell to their readership. Grown up politics is needed in this crumbling society, a grown up media would help us get there.

I would be very interested to see an audit of all the new trade deals, because it seems fairly evident that they were bought with massive bundles of visas. Generally, I don't think any of the deals did many favours for Britain. They were negotiated in such haste as trophies for Boris Johnson.

I do not care about Abbot, I am sick to death of it being about her! It is not about one MP, it's about the nation and in my book the nation always comes first! I have met her and I found her arrogant and self-important! I think she should stand down, she has been an MP for 35 years in the same seat! There has to be a cut-off point as new thinking and leadership are needed to ensure democracy is renewed! No seat for any party should ever be for life! We need to get back to people elected is a privilege to serve constituents! I get the need for some balance in Labour ranks as yes Keir needs to be challenged, Yet, what is the point if it is Abbot or Corbyn? They oppose everything, they never had anything positive to say of Labour on anything! To me that is no democracy, that is not challenging issues, that is just moaning! And that's all I ever hear Abbot say! I spent 40 years in Labour Politics, working at every level, Labour HQ, and Labour Ministers and I was tribal, I stopped when Corbyn came in and then enabled Brexit and I am no Keir fan at all!. I am Centre Left, however and should be a natural for Keir! But despite me being a total Remain Rejoiner I want Labour to win! And I really do not care about silly stories about Abbot, that won't stop the massive harm the Tories have caused!

Addressing the wording of the question. There has been an expectation that the polling gap must close as we approach polling day. However, there's a common fallacy around regression towards the mean, whereby if the things you are measuring start returning towards their historically average figures, that does not necessarily mean either side is doing anything right or causing it. The same goes for when inflation or fuel or wholesale energy prices fall after being unusually high compared with historical years. The government of the day can rarely be credited with anything resuming its normal path and the same will go for Labour if the regulation of monopolies or the illusion of competition on franchises is not overhauled.
@UKprl
@UKprl 5 ай бұрын
The gap may well close but it is by no means inevitable or within a time frame that matters before the first postal votes are sent out either, by when parties already need to have solidified any gains.

A lot of this analysis is very naive. Once Starmer is in power, if he gets there, he doesn't need to worry, in the short term, about 'frightening the horses' and he can get down to government. The focus can be completely different. if he does it well, he will reap the rewards. If not, he might only get one term. Give the electorate some credit to interpret the outcomes with intelligence, not on the basis of your ridiculous 'well, if she does it by one, she can argue it's a success'.
@GRB-tj6uj
@GRB-tj6uj 5 ай бұрын
The main challenge for the Starmer is going to be from his left, the conservatives will spend years regrouping. The only question is who's going to fill that space: the labour left, the greens, the libdems or a new party.

Both parties are locked in this battle over reducing immigration. We don't need to reduce immigration, we need to get better at processing requests so that we can address skill shortages. Starmer has talked about recruiting more nurses, where is he planning on getting them, the nurse factory? We need immigration, we need to get better at processing requests. The demonisation of immigrants from both sides is just blatant populist BS, making a scapegoat out of people to cover up their own failings.

Perhaps the decision (properly the responsibility of the NEC) was brought forward following discussion between Keir Starmer and NEC members, in order to try to squash all the speculation, fuelled irresponsibly by the BBC (and you) and limit damage. Why do you always, rather arrogantly, assume that your hypothesis is correct, when you often have little idea what has gone on behind the scenes.
