@@thelonious2213 well, it's true. Sadly, what the empire lacked for the TIE fighters are decent pilots that could use those exceptional specs to the best. Given that they need to file ranks quick only some would become skillful with the craft. Even then, due that the ISD doesn't carry enough of them to effectuate swarm tactics they tend to have difficults fighting with versatile fighters like the X-Wing

@@thelonious2213 I would have made the Empire fighter corps as variable in quality as the Stormtroopers. Most Imperial pilots would be rather poorly skilled as they came from underfunded academies that were more concerned about fulfilling their graduate quota than the quality of their graduates and as a result they would have to use swarm tactics . However there would be a handful of more prestigious academies with significantly larger budget meaning they can afford more rigorous training regimes ensuring higher quality graduate pilots in acceptable numbers

The similarity is a bit subjective. The greatest strength of the A6M2's design compared to its contemporaries was its unsurpassed operating range, thanks to its lightweight airframe. It was maneuverable as a consequence since it maintained energy well. It did not gain energy well in dives, had a modest never exceed speed, and modest protection. It was a fighter designed to strike across broad swathes of the Pacific Ocean. The TIE Fighter is fast and maneuverable but short range, designed for operating locally from a base or mothership. Its performance is equal parts its ion propulsion and bare bones design giving it good acceleration and responsiveness. The air wings for the IJA and IJN did prove to have similar shortcomings to the Imperial Navy in that despite having highly trained pilots they could not effectively adapt to their enemies' doctrinal and design counters as the conflict continued. Although it is understandable that people liken the star fighters from Star Wars to classic fighters, it's important to note the differences in design and doctrine. I'd personally argue that there are equal similarities to the Supermarine Spitfire which had fantastic engine performance and maneuverability and operated closer to home than its contemporaries.

You forgot to mention, that TIEs are also very easy on logistics. Not only are most components intercompatible across the entire series (spare parts from a fighter could be used to repair a bomber, interceptor or any other TIE), they are also so simple that most parts don't require a specialized manufacturing plant but could be build on almost any civilized planet, making it very easy to replenish stocks of spare parts without going back to the mayor production worlds.

Make rebels realize they stand zero chances, have the death star defended by the Second Fleet. I want all available squadrons to be flying in station's defense. Any victory heavy cruisers available should cover possible hyperspace routes in case rebels decide for a desperate escape. Tarkin: this is ridiculous, this station is invincible. Eck: and a complete victory with no rebel survivors will show it to the rest of the universe. After presentation in Alderaan system and a complete victory over the rebels no planetary system will be stupid enough to rise against us. this. the TIE was a bad design for a general-purpose starfighter, since it's low-yield cannons and lack of shields meant that pilots needed to be incredibly skilled to use it well (although it was amazing in the hands of those pilots), while it's lack of hyperdrive and landing gear meant that it was useless without a carrier, and thus could only be used by the navy. It made for a decent carrier-based interceptor, though. as a general-purpose starfighter, the Incom T-65 was superior, but it was more of a jack-of-all-trades, INTENDED to be used for a lot of different things. TL;DR: the reason for the TIE's bad rep is entirely because the Empire tried to use a specialist fighter as a workhorse.

The big issue with the Tie Fighter as a nimble, light weight star fighter for ace pilots is its massive profile. It's far too easy to hit from the side. The other light weight fighters you mentioned were also much more compact, and far harder to hit when piloted with the same level of skill.
@EliWintercross

A problem that was fixed somewhat with the TIE interceptor. But really, I think the real reason for the TIE was a nimble, mass produced ship that could be deployed en mass all over the empires worlds. Palpantine wasn't going to make the republics mistake of not having garrison forces
@MrAranton
@MrAranton 5 жыл бұрын
While the profile from the side is huge, it shouldn't be that easy to hit on account of how fast it moves. Even if it's flying straight and level. Keeping a lock is a nightmare and if it's evading, hitting a TIE from the side becomes almost impossible.

Red and Gold Squadrons would like a word with you about how inept the TIE Fighter is. Best Energy Rifle: E-11 Blaster Rifle Star Wars; Type-3 Phaser Rifle Star Trek; Lazgun Dune; Type-25 Energy Rifle Halo
@cgi2002
@cgi2002 5 жыл бұрын
Don't know about "best" but 1 of them is far more powerful than the others and is also in theory far more accurate. The Type-3 Phaser Rifle is simply because of its ability to disintegrate people/objects in a league of its own, also as it's a directed beam and not a projectile compared to the others, it is in theory more accurate. When it comes down to in universe tho, energy weapons in Dune are semi-suicidal to use, the E-11 is cheaply mass produced (lack of effective sights, limited fire rate, but cheap) so while an ok military rifle it's not great at any one job. The type 25 is probably the most deadly of the weapons, but has 2 distinct flaws, it lacks a sights limiting accuracy, especially at range and it can not be reloaded (In lore humans can't at all, covenant likely need engineers or specialist tools to do it). It is however nearly always fatal with most hits, and can realistically wound with near misses due to the extreme temperatures of the plasma it fires. Finally the Type-3 phaser rifle, in lore it's a fairly solid concept, accurate, powerful and highly configurable. Weaker than some of their contemporaries (Cardasian disruptors for example) and more complex They are a solid all round weapon but I would say I'll suited to the battlefield due to been overly complicated, and not of a robust enough construction when considering some of the more common opponents in star trek preferring melee combat, that said I believe they were also misused alot of the time, as it's possible to make them into area denial weapons to stop hostile approaches.

I’ve always thought it was suspect that the TIE/LN wasn’t even better than shown. The lack of life support, hyperdrive, shields, or missiles/torpedoes; in addition to the lack of moving parts, all means a low mass, which is easier for the powerful ion engines to maneuver and accelerate. External sensors could easily compensate for blind spots. Good sensor jammers compensate for lack of shields. The chin mounted cannons are perfectly located. It’s a great ship.

One thing I like about Star Wars Squadrons so far - Tie fighters hold their own if you can pilot them. The things are vicious little beasts. Not saying that it's exactly the same as in cannon but honestly the fighter/interceptor if you're a precision shot and can utilize the speed definitely can stand up to the rest of the fighters in a 5v5. No shields, but the maneuverability and speed of the things make anything other than an A-wing the underdog.

1:57 While TIEs are small I'd say they are anything but compact. Their solar panels or S-foils or whatever are so bulky and make the TIE have so much negative space. You could easily fit 18 TIE cockpit balls in the the space one whole tie takes up. And what would removing the wings cost the ship? What are the wings for? Power generation? The panels are fixed so they cant track to face the local sun, so the power output would be spotty. to get the most power the fighters would be forced to fly with one wing facing the sun. And when one wing is facing the second wing is completely shaded by the first! So you would *never* get 100% of the power output panels of that size should give you! They could be radiators or S-foils but why have them take up so much room and increase their profile so much? Their weapons and engines are less powerful than an x wing but they have much more surface area. I guess they could just be cheaply made so are less efficient?

The TIE fighter is a paradox of doctrine. It follows the starfighter heavy doctrine of the Clone Wars with a cheap and maneuverable fighter. But the new Imperial star destroyer holds fewer of them. So you got fewer, cheaper starfighters and less skilled pilots for the most part. Not an efficient plan. Now, the few TIE pilots that don't die instantly get very skilled so the empire get pretty impressive Interceptor and Defender pilots. Which fits more with the ISDs and the general imperial naval doctrine.

Fame. Wealth. Power. Raith Sienar had it all, but before he dissapeared to Twi`lek whorehouse there are the final words he said. "I`ve left my treasure free for the taking. You`ll have to find it first. I left all in one piece." The coordinates actually lead to a cabin in corellian backwoods (and vast underground hangar complex), where Raith is living with a squadron worth of starfighter groupies, two bartender droids and a still. If you just ask, he will tell you where the treasure is. If you stay for a night of drinking, he will show you his Missile Boat II prototype. "That Thrawn guy was a genious, but he wasn`t ambitious enough, so I replaced wings with solar panels for additional power, and then I put SLAM ( starwars.fandom.com/wiki/SubLight_Acceleration_Motor ) on a SLAM, so the power draw feeds a capacitor for short-barreled turbolaser. The faster you go, the faster you shoot. And then I doubled missile racks. But that wasn`t good enough, so I replaced missile racks with TIE-bomber munition hulls. Four of them. And I placed on them more solar panels, and then I put double SLAMs on each of them. So now you have 5x2 SLAM, powered by solar arrays, powering turbolaser. There is still hyperdrive, but I had to throw life support and shield generator to make room. It still has more munitions than Sheev ass had wrickles." "I`d like to see what those Rebel cocksuckers at Incom and those Verpin bug sluts will try and brew up to counter THAT!" "Stopping? Oh boy, you can`t stop that thing, the best would be to pitch around and thrust in opposite direction." "You still need this custom internal compensation suit I made. My first test pilots got liquified after trying to reach maximum speed."

If we went by the Legends history of the A-Wing, Gen. Dodonna actually saw the threat that a group of well trained Imperial pilots in TIE fighter could wreck the Rebel's plans. Hence, they had to come up with something that could match the speed and agility of the TIE fighter - the A-Wing. Further Legends lore has the Cracken Flight group of A-Wings take out a Star Destroyer on their own. So your analysis is actually valid.

This vid gave me an interesting Thought Experiment. You know the whole "How-many-SDs-could-you-build-for-the-cost-of-one-DS" thing. To look at it another way, again for the price of a Death Star, instead of a mega-fleet of SDs, a handful of Executer sized carriers and swarms of TIE Defenders, yes with Force Sensitive pilots.

Thank you. Im glad someone recognizes the value the TIE could have had. As an extremely reliable, lightweight, and easy to maintain fighter it was the perfect platform for skilled pilots to utilize. Like we see in other areas of the Empire, they emphasized raw numbers and bulk tactics over skill and the power of ta highly trained individual.

The TIE is an incredible fighter. In Vacuum at least. Even in the TIE Fighter sim which locked the lasers forward and couldn't aim them off-axis the way the in movie TIEs did was a force to be reckoned with for a fighter introduced not too long after the Clone Wars. Excellent maneuverability, good speed for its time, not actually all that delicate despite lacking shields, fewer systems to balance power between.

I always thought the TIE originates as a Technicial Inspection Environment. A Pod that was small and able to allow a technician to manuver through the superstructure of a spacecraft or space station to undertake visual inspections. If your capital ships are using generic plug and play modules you might need to inspect welds, positioning of engines, and soforth. The empire turns it into a TIE fighter and suddenly its a weapon of War.

The original TIE did make sense in that the Empire needed an affordable, mass-produce-able fighter that was still reasonably useful. They had plenty of pilots to spare, so the idea that many would end up as cannon-fodder was not a major setback, while the talented few had plenty of potential to take advantage of their superior maneuverability over the typical rebel fighters. The only reason this strategy didn't work was because the plot wasn't written that way. But it could have been.

The Empire should've gone with Kuat Systems Engineering's A-Wing. It's only major limitations were the result of the Rebel Alliance's financiallimitations. The Emoire even had contracts with Kuat that rolled over from the G.A.R. and the A-Wing was basically a Jedi Starfighter for non-force sensitive pilots. Why did they even bother with Seinar Fleet Dystems? Considering the heavy losses, anything cheaper than 100 TIE-LN fighters would've been a wise investment. #askeck

Said it before, say it again: *Tri* Ion Engine. Slightly larger, shielded, two laser cannons, one ion cannon. Faster, more maneuverable, pilots live long enough to get skills, even a capital ship has to worry a little because of the ion, able to capture and detain *or* kill. Slight increase in cost, still minimalist, still awesome.

Rebel starfighters are usually attacking defended orbital or planetside facilities, or convoys, so shields and torpedoes are useful for them. On the other hand, the Empire is always trying to chase down these Rebel fighters rather than going on offensive strikes, so I think it makes sense that they'd want as much speed and maneuverability as possible in their fighters.

My view of the TIE fighter was this: the TIE was a real trial by fire. New pilots were likely to get killed if they strayed from the larger formations, but if they survived long enough to gather the necessary skill, they could do thing no other fighter could. Really the Empires greatest failure was not the fighter itself, but the lack of training and disregard they showed for the lives of their men. With extensive training and the right tactics the TIE could have been truly superb.

Has anyone noticed that TIE fighters are basically updated Jedi fighters using the same front view ? This suggests that Palpatine might have defered to Vader's preference . Using ion engines from previous Anakin flown ships into a cockpit view of a Jedi ship. That Anakin also flew . This suggests that the TIE FIGHTER was a mixture of everything VADER has flown . With this I would take an educated guess that the TIE FIGHTER had a hyperdrive ring , or square to do long travel.

Lucas wrote in the 1970s after star wars first came out that the tie fighters were the most advanced fighter in the galaxy. The empire was constantly developing more advanced weapons all the time. Darth Vader's tie was, in the words of Lucas, "next year's model" which, of course Darth Vader would have. The rebellion fighters were described by Lucas as old, second hand from the old republic, and flown "with the hood off". Like the cars of his youth in the 1950s with the hood off to make it easier to be customized, and souped up, to compete with the more advanced imperial ties. (does your generation know what the term "souped up" means?)

Another fact I was thinking about is a lot of good pilots in both the Empire and the resistance and later the new Republic were actually normal people but they grew up flying for most their lives We know for example that most of rogue squadron either were natural pilots or were flying most their lives and even wedge was a pilot for most of his life so it's not impossible to train pilots And sharpen their skills to the point where they are basically Unstoppable

With the fall of the Jedi, they had a proven airframe in the Actis Interceptor that they made Tie fighters from. With the Tie not even having life support systems, it's even more stripped down. Makes you wonder what a Jedi could have done in one.

The TIE is an excellent spacecraft. Despite less guns, it fires more shots per minute than the Xwing (source: I slowed down the OT and watched frame by frame to see who shot more shots. X-wings fire 2 shots per frame when they were gunning, TIEs shot a max of 6). It's faster and more maneuverable than an Xwing (capable of hovering and strafing side to side). Shields at best stop one or two shots. With most fighters firing rapidly, they are not that big of an advantage. Look at Endor and Yavin, Rebel fighters get wrecked in a few shots all the time. No life support: not an issue as your suit has life support. That means, no matter how damaged your ship, as long as you aren't hit you're still gonna breathe. You don't need to worry about your windshield being cracked or hull being breached. No hyperdrive: fits imperial doctrine quite well. The Rebels need hyperdrives for their hit and run operations, as fighters are their main strike craft. The Empire used fighters to screen their capital ships and provide local defense, driving off enemy fighters. TIEs are excellent at this. My theory for why the Xwing pilots tend to dominate is as follows: The Rebels have a lot less pilots, and a lot more targets. As such, the average Rebel pilot likely flies many more missions a lot more often than the average TIE pilot, who spends most his career seeing little to no action. As a result, the average Xwing pilots is likely more experienced in combat than the average Imperial. Just thought of this and wanted to hear someone else's thoughts to validate the fact I wasted 3 hours on this.

I always preferred to play as a imperial pilot. I feel that Tie's are just much more focused for dog fighting as fighter. Although I do wish that the empire cared more for its pilots, maybe adding a minimal or limited shielding would have been nice.

It's funny to me, that as the Empire had brought low any real threat to their power, that they now turned to the Tarkin Doctrine, when the majority of conflicts would be planetary affairs or dealing with Pirates. In such scaled down conflicts, smaller, more maneuverable ships and competent fighters would be more effective than ever larger capital ships. It was the crux of their struggle against the Rebellion. A small force that could outmaneuver the larger ships of the Empire, and punch above their weight with fighter based proton torpedoes and bombs. Eck has already talked about the glaring need for point defense as well as matching fighter superiority. So just as they had no need for overwhelming capital ships, is when they ramp up production, and when they needed more maneuverable forces, they didn't have them. Although both the Republic and CIS did. :D

Even without the proposed force sensitive pilots a Fighter core composed of TIEs but focused o pilot skill (maybe focused on personal glory for the pilot) could be Extremely effective, I am thinking Baron Fel. I would only introduce one chance to the TIE/ln: add shields, that would both reduce the deaths of good pilots and improve atmosphere performance.

Just align the wings horizontally, add more windows and find a clever way to stack them up in the hangar. That alone would reduce the target profile and make them much better fighters.

You either pay in tech or you pay in pilot skill, apparently. A minimum-material ship needs a pilot capable enough to capitalize on the advantages and cover the weaknesses, which the Empire couldn't satisfy to the level of its use. That said, it gave a good covert potential for any force-sensitive tools of Sidious: everyone would think the fighter is pathetic, up until they realize they can't actually hit it.
