I see your point, but consider this: the current UN emblem looks friendlier than the 4 pillars thing because it's pleasant and round while the pillars are are very angular and almost intimidating looking. Also, the symbolism is way too obscure and abstract for the general population cuz like everyvone knows about the continents, but the 4 basic freedoms is straight up nerd shit lol
@LtLabcoat3 жыл бұрын
The symbolism being easily understood is the most important part. For the talk about the UN flag being unrecognisable at a distance, four pillars is unrecognisable whatsoever if you don't already know what it represents. But a flag with a world and a peace symbol? You don't even have to have heard what the UN even is, you'd still guess what it's about.

I disagree. Yes, the emblem is kind of difficult to deduce from a distance. But the stark contrast of the coloration (blue and white), which is only shared by one other nation, is more than enough to denote the flag of the United Nations. Also, you oversimplify the flag by removing the world map and replacing it with abstract bars. A flag is to be simple, yes, but it should also be meaningful and indicative of the entity it represents. A world map clearly identifies to anyone, regardless of language, that this flag represents a global organization. Four bars are much more abstract, and meaning is much harder to deduce. I insist that the simplicity of colors makes up for the complexity of the world map, rounding out into what is arguably one of the most easily identified flags in the entire world.

Like the United Kingdom flag, it represents England, Scotland and Northern Ireland combining their flags together but also to signify their unity as they share these isles together. Or the American Flag with the stars representing the 50-49 States. Simplicity doesn’t always mean good but it can be used if that simplicity represents something more complex.

I mean, a good flag IS visible and distinguishable. It’s easy to find on a uniform so that you can easily see who that soldier serves. That’s the point. Civilians can easily find the UN troops, that’s a good thing. People fighting against UN troops likewise ought to know, they’re fighting against UN troops. If the enemy is close enough to use the icon as a crosshair, then they probably don’t even need said crosshair
@ATFprdepartment3 жыл бұрын
@@omnominus my issue here is combat troops being thrust into battle with plastic all-blue bucket helmets (like the ones given to Irish soldiers in Jadotville, which I’m pretty sure they decided to not even bother wearing them). For identification, that’s simple solution, out of combat, you’ve got the bright blue arm bands, and in battle, an arm band is easy and not betraying camouflage nearly as much as 20% of the uniform being this useless bright blue piece of plastic easily giving away your position to the enemy.
@warron24 Жыл бұрын
@@ATFprdepartment They're not going into battle. Most of the time the best way to keep UN soldiers safe is by letting everyone know they're UN soldiers because there are consequences to targeting peacekeepers and most groups aren't going to risk it.. @thenotsodemocraticrepublic77313 жыл бұрын
I’d have to disagree, I think that the flags simplicity works because it has to represent everyone so the symbolism has to be broad and include everyone. The blue represents the sky which is the same for everyone and is the opposite of red which is often associated blood and war, the map shows the earth with no borders so nations with territorial disputes won’t get offended, and the olive branch’s while cliché are widely recognized as symbols of peace. If you put any more symbolism you risk alienating or offending a nation. On the other hand I think your redesign goes too far in the other direction were you simplified it to the point where it has lost all meaning, and in a worst case scenario could be misinterpreted in a negative way.

I very strongly disagree with most points you made in this video. I actually really like the UN flag and the way it represents earth. The Lay-out of the world‘s continents is pretty much the most basic (and only) thing that all countries can agree and put similar value on as it simply displays their „home“. The Northpole projection is ingenious as it removes a lot of the biases towards a specific region since it is simply a fact that there are more people and, even more importantly, more landmass on the northern hemisphere. Leaving Antarctica out is a very acceptable down side to this and the compromise on focusing on the GMT Line makes sense as it puts the pacific towards the back which is the least inhabited part of the globe. Communication is still functioning as the white and blue Colour scheme is Sufficient to distinctly spot the UN flag from a distance and being able to “draw” a flag really shouldn’t be a criteria for flag design in our day and age anymore. Also those “fundamental values” you described are actually much more euro centric (or American) than the simple display of the geographic features of the earth. Freedom of speech and freedom of worship are definitely NOT the most common shared values across the entire globe. And even if they were I can’t imagine China or anyone else for that matter being happy with a quote of a wartime US-president being the foundation of what essentially is the world’s emblem. Therefore I find the 4 stripes pattern (not even mentioning its obvious visual shortcomings which others here have already described sufficiently) decidedly inferior compared to the current design (which I do think is in fact the best compromise there is).

Anyone looking at it from afar will guess it's the UN (the flag of Somalia is rarely scene and the central area shaps are kind of opposites), the red and white flag you're offering actual less recognizable, red and white aren't exactly rare on flags. The messagery is much less controversial. Instead of imposing American values (it's literrally based on a state of the union adress, not exactly neutral) that are at best centered on the West it puts a clear neutral message that few would openly object to (freedom of speach and religion are not at all seen as universal rights by UN countires let alons beligireant combatants). Being non controversial is key for a flag of peace keepers who want to be defended by the universal values they represent.

Honestly this entire video feels dumb. The UN flag is probably the second most recognizable flag in the world. Literally there's only 1 other country using that light blue and white combination. And while it's not perfect. His new flag is so bad. There's the symbolism that's just dumb. He's using American values in a UN flag? And then he claims using the line where the whole globe adjusts it's time is biased? Also there's the fact everyone would be confused by it. It's redesign lacks any recognition. Like he said, the UN relies on recognition to defend itself and 4 pillars are so fucking vague nobody would recognize it. This video just reeks of him trying to justify why the UN would use this flag. He creates this "issue" with recognizability and then does mental gymnastics trying to prove the UN's old flag was better when it was far, far worse. It adds nothing. It creates conflict and confusion. Honestly the worse video on his Chanel by far.

I know keeping it simple is an important rule in flag design but I think this is a rare exception. The UN flag should be a little grandiose and flamboyant. I think the whole "you can't see the details from a distance" isn't necessarily an issue. As long as you can identify what the flag is at a distance, it doesn't matter how many details it has. For example, look at the Portuguese flag, it has a lot of detail in the center, but has a design that lets it stand out from other flags at a glance. I'd argue it's a better flag than for example the Dutch flag, which is really simple and straightforward, but there's so many similar looking flags (Russia, Luxemburg, Croatia, Paraguay, just to name a few) that it loses that "identifiable from a distance" property.

While the UN emblem is definitely overly detailed in a vexillological sense, I do like it more than just four simple pillars, which are a bit boring :’ ) Additionally, there is also a issue regarding the meaning of the pillars; Some UN-member states are not exactly the biggest fans of (some of) these freedoms and might oppose such a new design. I think a better solution might be to simplify the projection of the earth on the flag and maybe to remove the wreath.

(1:10) Proportions/Aspect ratio can never be "bigger" than another. 2:3 isn't bigger than 1:1, and isn't bigger than 3:5. It's all about how it's formatted. • If you have a fixed width of the flags, then the less square flags will be bigger and longer. • If you have a fixed length of the flags, then the more square flags will be bigger and taller. • If you ensure all flags have the same area, then no flag is bigger than another. A 1:1 flag will be shorter but taller than a 2:3 flag
@matj12 Жыл бұрын
Mathematically, if a ratio is just a rational number, it is comparable to other ratios. 2:3 = 0.66…, 1:1 = 1, 3:5 = 0.6. So 3:5 < 2:3, and 2:3 < 1:1. You identify two different things: the area of a flag and the size of its aspect ratio. I think we agree on that greater area means bigger flag, but bigger aspect ratio can mean relatively either wider or higher depending on the definition. In this case, it seems that the aspect ratio is the ratio of height to width, so relatively higher is bigger.

While I don't feel like his Tapakapa's flag is terrible, I don't feel like the current one needs to be changed. Reason being that if you can't perfectly draw a flag that doesn't make it terrible. If you can get close enough by a terrible or inacurrate drawing it's good enough. A tip for making the current flag better would be to have a second side so on one side you'd have a north pole centered world and the other side has a south pole centered world. If completely redesigned, a dove on the background would look nice.
