I recently lost my lovely wife and being disabled myself I have found myself on benefits on Universal Credit. An organisation that is not fit for purpose. My future, along with countless others is now so bleak that I see little or no point in continuing living, now, below the national breadline not affording to pay my bills or even enough to buy decent food. The future for me is homeless, alone, cold and hungry. Many will say "so what" fair enough, but for me it's so much more, to those who do take this attitude I say.....Wait until it happens to you!

I am in my early 60's. If you had asked me in 2015 whether I would see an independent Scotland and a reunited Ireland in my lifetime, I would have replied "almost certainly not". Now I believe that seeing a reunited Ireland is inevitable and an independent Scotland is probable before I reach the end of my natural span. Both these will be the result of years of Tory misrule and how the outcome of the 2016 referendum has been handled by the same Tory kakistocracy.
@LeMerch

I can see a United Ireland because Dublin has already managed to annex Northern Ireland economically and over time will bring its politics under the influence of Dublin. As for Scotland, it's harder to know. The last vote was vicious. Scotland would be better off independent, just like Ireland is. I think Scotland & Ireland would work better in some form of closer relationship - whatever that is, as its more balanced. England skews the relationship, just because of its size comparison and it's ability to pull Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland around on a shackle. England going its own way would suit its populations needs and free the other nations to decide their own destiny. I'd fear for Wales though, its quite small and relies heavily on England but I could be wrong there - they are a proud and wonderful people but I'm not sure they want to break up from the UK and its close ties with England.

I’m from the U.K. It is corrupt beyond belief. A developer wanted to build a huge development in our neighbourhood when we are already bursting at the seams to the extent there are regular burst water mains. The local government and planning directorate rejected the application. So the developer went to the Housing Secretary and paid his party a “donation” in return for planning permission. It was a bribe, but never got held to account. Then my local borough has been through 12 years of hell to the extent nearly 60% of children are in poverty, racial divisions and systemic corruption in local government. Racism is rife too.

Most of the problems of overzealous privitization, corruption, stingy government spending, low taxes on the rich, raising cost of living and skyrocketing inequality are present here as well. We have also been ruled by a conservative party for the past 13 years and are moving in a very similar direction. We should be seeing the UK as an ominous foreshadowing of what could happen to us soon if we don't change course.

Honestly when I look at my country right now I don’t know whether to cry or laugh 😭 with each day it becomes more and more clear that we have been absolutely conned. People in power avoided accountability and responsibility by telling us that migrants and people on benefits were the cause of our problems, while their wealthy donors squeezed the working people of this country for all we have. Post-Brexit, absolutely nothing is better. All our existing problems are ongoing, and we have a whole bunch of new issues as well. Covid has also further exacerbated everything. It’s a shame, because we are a beautiful country and I really do think this is a great place to live. But there are so many glaring institutional problems.

What makes you think Scotland, NI and Wales will do see well independently? the economy will plummet. They will still have to go through a long process to join the EU.. so they will be truly independent countries from the time they leave UK to the time they join EU - just that period of time will be enough that all 3 are knocking on Englands door begging for help once again. Everything those places have is through England, so all trade, everything..they would need to start their own new trade deals. They wouldn't last 5 minutes but it would be very entertaining to see them try and fail miserably. It reminds me as a kid when you would "run away from home" - only to return shortly after, wet, dirty, hungry and weak and immediately saying "sorry I won't do it again" when the door is opened

An American, I used to think we had the biggest problem with right wing (Republican) institutionalized race hating, cutting off our noses to spite our faces. With our recent mid-term elections, I now see I was wrong. Unlike Westminster, we don't write xenophobia and color/national origin/ poor people bashing into law. I was astonished to see Westminster rush to Brexit based on a paper thin majority in a referendum on a subject in which voters were misinformed by cynical gutter politicians. In the U.S. NO constitutional change is permitted without a clear super majority. And despite a super majority of Scots who did not want to be dragged out of the EU, Westminster simply ignores them. I just think the U.K. has been plagued with incompetent and crooked government for more than a decade. The mood of the English electorate seems nasty these days. It appears to me the usefulness of the U.K. is ended and whatever transitional difficulties may arise, Scotland and Northern Ireland should leave. Let "Little England" stew in its own juices.

I am totally against independence for Scotland the SNP in 15 years have done nothing for the Scottish people. I’m thankful the union made sure Scotland had vaccines throughout the pandemic because Sturgeon wanted to be in line with the EU that would have caused more deaths in Scotland The SNP have lied about the sustainability of independence, they have destroyed Scotland’s health service since they were given autonomy over the Scottish health service. Tax money that should have been invested in Scotland was taken by the SNP and they refuse to say where it went and why they felt the right to take what belonged to the Scottish people to use as they pleased. The 20 14 Referendum resulted in Scotland saying NO in a democratic vote by the people. Others seem to have forgotten that fact it would by a much higher majority today as the SNP have shown their true co,ours self serving greedy trough feeders who care nothing of the welfare of the people of Scotland. So if there is another vote on independence the answer NO will be more resounding than the first vote we have had enough of this Dictatorial SNP who speak only for themselves not for the people of Scotland.

@@Jeffreypennings8 The same old boring argument that loyalists love to beat to their drum (pun intended) Ireland can very much afford the north and it's been widely proven by economists. Have you not done any research? Afraid to? Firstly, the island is becoming one economically speaking with trade now booming between north and south - this makes reunification much easier. The north's annual subsidy from Britain is around the 9 billion pound mark, however, not all of this would carry over into Ireland. Economists estimated it to be approximately 2 or 3 billion pounds instead and would merely result in a minimal pick-up by Irish citizens (it's short-term and manageable). Also, you're forgetting we'd be benefitting from the north's resources, too! Trade is already huge right now and also tourism, don't forget 💚 Another thing is there are already Irish companies working both side of the imaginary border. Are you forgetting that we supply your electricity 😏 Irish energy company Viridian owns electricity and gas supplier Energia, two power plants in Dublin and PowerNI in the North. Also, agriculturally, Cavan-based Lakeland Dairies is the island’s second largest dairy co-op and works both sides of the imaginary border. Resources will spill over between north and south creating an economic balance. It won't be perfect or plain sailing, but who said it would be? At the end of the day, the people of the north voted to remain in the EU. Young people want that and young people want change. Britain isn't viable anymore and its GDP is decreasing. The Scots will get independence as the movement is growing. The Union is breaking up. The Tories don't give a rats about you all. You cost too much for them and they don't get back. Public spending on services is often higher in the north than other parts of the UK. The north is only doing better now thanks to the protocol and its vote away from Brexit. When England stands on its own it may found a new North Sea union with Norway and Denmark, once Denmark leaves the EU of course. It's hard to say if Cornwall will leave the UK as well. One point about Scotland though: most of the oil is with the Shetlands and Orkneys and they want to break away from Scotland. Those islands may want to join the new North Sea Union which would probably make more sense for everyone.

These “western” empires and monarchies, including the US, have such oblivious vulgar audacity to have built their extraordinary wealth and security on the backs of so many of the regions they wall-out and condescend to. It’s quite too bad if you don’t want to share, (aka: pay the overdue debt) Simply playacting as the most civilized, virtuous and advanced people would already be embarrassingly comedically absurd, but carrying on as such while the trophies of the very spoils of this colonizing extraction are brazenly on display in museums, academia, and manors all across these countries; the evidence openly showcased in an act of such extraordinary blithe pompous ghoulish on-the-nose geopolitical gaslighting. This is a matter of basic cosmic justice. We love nothing more than leveraging unpaid debts, with great heaping doses of condescension, so this issue should be quite easy for any Westerner to understand. Mmph.

EU officials come round to your house and tell you who you can trade with, what you can buy and where from. They then charge you an extortionate amount per week for this, and then give you some back. But you have to spend it on what they say. Would you allow a random to come into your house and tell you this. Of course not. Winston Churchill said no to this after the war, but we went back to the EU for fear of missing out. Then reality bites and the main people screaming bloody murder where businesses because of financial concerns and those who were caught in the visa crossfire. There is nothing wrong with freedom of movement..... unless there are terrorists, human traffickers, underworld gangs etc, etc, coming in to wreak havoc on a civilised society. My partner a nurse regularly treated an EU woman for a medical condition that is very expensive. The woman does not live in the UK but used an address a friend lived in joined a doctor surgery and say no more. She is rich and can travel to the UK and exploit the NHS to get her treatment. My son worked with another EU worker. He expected to get a state pension here. After four years here, he found out you have to work 25 to get it and left. I am not biased because the world has so many wonderful well intentioned people in it, but it is also full of rotten eggs. At least now, we get to decide who comes and for what reason. We grow tomatoes in the UK but EU state we have to sell them abroad and buy Spanish tomatoes instead. Yes... lets move this product hundreds of miles both ways in the name of trade. Forget that it is sprayed with toxic chemicals so it lasts in transit, only to reach your fridge and go off in a day or so. Forget the carbon footprint in the name of commerce, food waste and what those chemicals are doing to your DNA. Anyone remember straight bananas and square watermelons put forth as an EU necessity to ship more produce around the globe? That is the genius we were dealing with. Do you notice new builds are crammed together, with people living on top of each other. Gardens are smaller and smaller. Soon no-one will be able to grow crops, and dictate the health of our foods except Corporations, as if they do not already. Then there's Macron wanting to start a new EU state to break away from Nato. Because EU will be stronger together away from everyone else. If it goes nuclear no-one escapes, so why have an EU state. Who in western society is actually going to start a global offensive? My words will most likely be wasted here, but I feel better for it. As for the OP. Of course Brexit is to blame for Covid who else... oh and global inflation. Brexit also caused fuel hikes as well. Brexit is also to blame for lack of wheat and sunflower oil not coming out of Ukraine. Unfortunately too many people believe they are reporters, but 99.9% of them are biased by their own perspective. But one thing I agree with, lets split, because it does not matter if it is the Welsh assembly, Holyrood, or the house of not so commons people, politician's are self-centred, and then at least the Scots, Welsh and Irish can moan about how their government are really just as useless. God save the Queen!

The deceit and the obfuscation of the truth around what joining meant, was never revealed. The government papers released some years later showed the disregard they had for the population, and the plan to obscure the truth about joining, but the media quickly ignored it. It was the first time we had seen the media was controlled by the government, and any voice telling the truth about the plan wasn't allowed, and would literally be shouted over so you couldn't hear it. Our Teacher was shocked and couldn't believe what he was seeing on our hired TV, and because of the deceit and lies considered the plan to be treason. He's lying Sir, you can see it on his face. I have to agree he said, blatantly lying in the house. Every Friday for over a year we poured over that weeks lies, and there was never a quite week. Joining was to line their pockets, and they couldn't wait to see our faces when we realised the enormity of what they had done. According to my left wing teachers in 1973 the EU was a stepping stone to Babylon and a one world government. In reality the low paid Agriculture workers got swapped for cheaper migrants. The low paid construction workers got swapped for 4 million cheaper migrants to increase profits for those concerned, the low paid hair dressers got swapped for lower paid migrants along with many more. Who's the winner in all this. It's not the low paid anywhere in Europe, as they have all been exploited in one way or another. I'm glad we voted out, but I wish the public had wised up the morning after Heath had put pen to paper, and left before the EU had infiltrated everything, and our gold stocks had been reduced in readiness for joining and never coming back. Just about to leave school our teachers didn't look on it as a good move for anyone. Some years later the Lords reported on the effects of the mass wage reduction and it had harmed the GDP so they wondered why the government had done it. Some time later they realised Priti Patels migration plans could be used to reduce the wages of the middle class, then we would hear some noise. The workers couldn't understand how the Labour party had conspired to reduce their wages, so Labour lost the next election , and it will take a while to forget. Currently we are supplying arms to the Ukraine from stockpiles we had. Years worth of our taxes have gone up in smoke and they will need restocking immediately from more of our taxes. We are financing the USA's proxy war with Russia whilst being broke, yet nobody asked us if we wanted to just like in 1973. If the truth had been known about joining, they knew if asked the answer would definitely be no, so deceit was decided on. There hasn't been a year since without a list of deceits spouted by our leaders, no matter which side they are from. It's all rotten.

When my parents went on holiday to several countries across western Europe a few years ago, a couple of people in their tourist group who they became friends with were two young women in their late twenties from Dublin. According to them, Dublin has become the “city of cranes” due to companies which have their offices in London relocating to Dublin to remain located in the EU but in close proximity to London if need be. It’s good for the Republic of Ireland to receive an economic boost of course, but it goes to show how the UK have shot themselves in the foot.

So explain why London is still the biggest trading, finance and insurance centre in Europe and has added 5,000 new jobs since 2016? Dublin attracted businesses as HQs because of low Corporation Tax for trading in Euro denominated paper. Well that bubble has been burst by the EU who instructed the Irish Government to increase tax rates. Ooops! And now the Irish have been landed with a 16 bn Euro debt courtesy of the EU and are now (after the UK left) having to pay contributions to be in the EU. See how long that lasts.

Ireland has agreed to join an OECD accord to have a minium corporation tax rate of 15% along with 134 other countries Since Brexshit the economy of Ireland has blossomed with Irish food producers supplying European shops as well as British shops with Irish food and commodities. As am aside, 1/3 of all milk produced in N Ireland comes south of the border for processing.ThT is one of the reasons why Ulster farmers defied the D U P and voted remain. It is not 5,000 to Dublin. But do please give me the source for that. You then quote '£200 billion' like its a big hole has been created. You have absolutely NO idea just how big a trading market the City is. London accounts for 43 per cent of the turnover in the $6.6tn-a-day foreign exchange market (so $2.8 Trn a DAY) and half of the daily $6.5tn (so $3.25 Trn a DAY) traded in interest rate derivatives. Brexit has not dented the UK capital’s dominance in these markets. @@williampatrickfagan7590 Last point first: What you see is the EU and UK emerging from a 2 year global pandemic that destroyed the global economy and created huge issues for the deep sea shipping industry that is having serious effects on manufacturing. Like car parts. The UK is emerging in better shape than the EU in GDP terms and UK GDP is now some points bigger than pre COVID. No doubt other countries are as well but you pointed the finger at the UK. And that £200 Bn (if it is that) was held in Euros anyway so moving it is not a cash loss to anyone let alone a cash benefit to Dublin. As the UK owners still own it. Just in a different bank account. To put it into context: Turnover in London on just TWO trades is some $6 Trn a DAY. Which is £4.5 Trn a DAY. So that £200 Bn one off move = 4.4% of one day's trading. In annual terms it is a spec of dust. You sort of forgot that 2 year pandemic and blamed a 1 year old Brexit .... ffs! Trained economists cannot split out the effects of one versus the other but you can? 🤭 So you have no sources for your 5,000 figure just 'the papers'? Well thats OK then ... As for the UK 'benefitting from leaving' you really do not get it do you? This was not about getting one over on the EU, or making shedloads of cash it was about restoring our sovereignty and bringing policy and decision making back to our Parliament. We had had enough of the EU dictating to us on every policy, making 49% of our laws and Directives and ignoring its 2nd largest contributor like we were Malta when we had concerns. As happened in 2015 when the EU gave Cameron ( a staunch Remainer) the big middle finger. We were proven right with how shabbily Tusk, Barnier & Co treated Theresa May (another staunch Remainer) in all the discussions.

It backfired on them of course, despite warnings, when the UKG could not reconcile the GFA with a hard border, and so the solution, a Northern Ireland protocol is a compromise in relation to trading and customs arrangements. The trouble is the DUP troublemakers have to regard this as a political defeat, and have to accept that with fewer than 40% of people in NI supporting Brexit, and fewer than 20% supporting them electorally that they can throw their weight around undemocratically

The majority of people living in NI voted to remain in EU, that is common knowledge and that is something you should acknowledge. The GFA allows for NO hard border on the island of Ireland as the original OP points out and the NIP was a solution to that which the UKG agreed to. The UKG represents the Province of Northern Ireland so the Northern Irish Assembly should accept the NIP. The break up of the Union is clearly a possibility because the UK is in one huge mess.

There was no real need for a hard border since an enhancement of the existing excise ,vat and currency border electronically and remotely could have been achieved. Mainly because of a what another Remainer told me which sort of fitted with the comments I was getting on the ground. He who was the chief executive contractor for Trusthouse Forte. He told me he sacked all British workers, thousands and thousands of them, because the Polish were cheaper (not because the UK workers didn't want to do their jobs - which echo chamber Remainers convince themselves). . This fitted with the government stats that I'd the checking confirming that the lowest paid had suppressed wages for 25 years!! A reduction of 3.7% if you included inflation. The better qualified pols in factories also meant unemployment went up too. I get why people want to hang onto some utopian belief about the EU. I once thought that way too. I just woke up and realised that the biggest enemy if us all, all Europeans, all peoples, was Neoliberalism and Globalism. It costs jobs, ruins family businesses and feeds the global monopolies of the elite. Even the conflict in Ukraine is about EU/US elites who simply want to increase their empires. The EU makes laws to support their growth - how can ANY real socialists agree with such an institution? As Tony Ben put it "I thought the EU was great but when I looked closely, it was about building an empire- a banking empire". Here in Portugal local shops are closing due to big stores opening and even village water taps are switched off to ensure the big water companies maximise their profits 😪. There seems to be a reluctance of many to acknowledge these facts about the EU. This lack of acceptance and usurping of the labour party by the ignorant, educated Progressives classes will mean the Conservatives are likely to win again. Politics is just crap now. Us real working class socialist just don't have anyone to vote for. We'd rather let the Cons win than have a pious bunch of Progressives take over. A very sad state of affairs indeed. Who do we vote for now?

I don't know much about UK I was born in Canada. But I know a friend who live in UK before. After Brexit they left the UK and move the business to Canada. He still phone his friends, family and relatives back home. Everyday they told him fighting with neighbors, friends, families, community and peers and even coworkers. Harassment violent and bullying and being targeted. There are lot of racism on the street. Some non white people end up in hospital. Shortage of food, labour and more. Lack of job opportunities and increase in taxes and everything else from transportation and housing. Export and import have lot of red tape. There are lot of problem UK.

A view from Dublin : Brexit was a childish move, nobody is benefiting from it , and after all the ,,majority'' was tiny , if voter turnout would have been different maybe the result would have been different , was like playing dice for an important matter . Hopefully one day , not so far away , will be another referendum to undo Brexit .

I know longer leave in Britain however I lived in ingland for over twenty years my decision to leave UK was made many years ago and has nothing to do with brexit.. Saying that I can't understand how anyone would won't to give up access to twenty seven country's were they could work live get acess to free helfcare and many other benefits.. Personally i believe that people were missed lead and this now a burger problems if UK wanted to rejoin the EU it will take at least ten years and it will never get back the benefits that it had as a member.... Wish you all well

The main issue was and is the EU introduced rules on tightening money laundering rules, so to the Tories and in fairness some members of other parties but mainly the Tories who tend to do things on an epic proportions, having sold off or closed so many of the UK's industries examples like auto manufacturing, helicopter manufacturers, rail system, gas suppliers, etc etc. So when the kids have no jobs or prospect outside of the Tory heartland, they look for reasons why,so to distract them these Tories sold them on the lie they were better off outside of the EU and it's all the fault of those pesky foreigners, now they're in deep shite. But the Tory grandes are okay they can asset strip for a while longer whilst tucking away their millions offshore avoiding taxes and at the same time claiming that trickle down economics really works. All done in the middle of a pandemic for a convenient cover and also to saddle the NHS with crippling debt. Yet many still chug down the Kool aid.

@@juliandavies7890 sorry mate the coal mines were shut by Thatcher also the Helicopter manufacturers (Westland) were sold off to the Americans, incidentally the best prime minister the country never had resigned over that one, now there's a housing estate there, the rail system was sold off for as little as a pound again under the Tories, the car industry was sold to I think Phoenix who basically robbed the retirement fund and what remained of any assets . The Tories broke up the Energy supplying sector, tell me how that's going oh and where's the windfall from north sea oil and gas, it's not in a national fund like say Norway's or is it mostly in the pockets of Tory grandes and donors, you've not mentioned the money laundering rules or offshore money. Keep drinking the Kool aid .

Thatcher sold the UK industrial base and nationalized industries and left those communities on the scrapheap of human misery called the dole. Children of Britain know your place , born poor, die poor, the future belongs to those who can afford it.
