We won't learn if we continue to believe we are better & smarter than others. Instead, we should thank China for the wakeup calls and listen with humility to what they have to say. I would question Economy's insight of Chinese discontentment of their government. According the article "What the West Gets Wrong About China" in the Harvard Business Review, "Many Chinese believe that the country’s recent economic achievements have actually come about because of, not despite, China’s authoritarian form of government."

If you look at the polls, cpc has 95.5% approval rating at the national level. 13 year Harvard poll from 2003-2016. Every other western poll has the same numbers and proves this is the mainstream view. Before you go and say "Chinese cannot disapprove", local government only had around 11% or something. Same as us congress numbers. But at national level, it's obvious most Chinese approve of the direction and development and running of the country. Local issues they are more lacking and discontent but those are local issues and not "Chinese want to overthrow the gov because no free speech" or "they hate xi". It's obvious Xi is popular and well supported. No leader who is hated will be leader for long. That's not how China works! Why would cpc keep a hated leader or incompetent one? They wouldn't. It would only hurt themselves and the party and country, and it would be stupid. Chinese aren't stupid else they would not keep rising like they are. Look up latana democracy index poll 2022-2023 etc. China ranks first in democracy index. Most Chinese think they have the right amount of democracy and most Chinese think they are a democracy. Compare with USA, it's or any other country in the world. China comes out first on most democracy index and approval ratings. It's not a secret. She is obviously biased and talking about "under the surface" there is possibly discontent. Lol. In other words she is just making shit up with zero numbers or polls to back up her anti china views. And this is supposed to be some china expert? Please.

America has no moral high ground versus China and the world see it. Who would buy up American government debt at a same or large quality as how much China did during 2007-2008? America is facing a government bond bubble that would cost Americas reserve currency status. What did you respect when America is printing more bonds to pay of last year bond interest meaning more bond would need to be printed out next year. There was a critical threshold and America has crossed in the after math of covid. Before they cross it it can be rebalance without a crash and either by reducing goverment spending on benefits or military spending or increase personal or corporate tax however now America can’t do so without cause other problem like hurting American business or house hold spending. The Chinese real estate bubble can be fix it’s a matter of filtering out bad debt which is improving if effort by the CCP to buy up unfinished project then outsourcing it to be completed. The last option America has without cost the American elites anything is to start a war against China and by doing so it would give America an excuse to relinquish there government bond obligation while also confiscating China foreign assets. This is what the American elites mean when they say America would not pay off its debt or that American reserve currency status is because of the large military. They are pointing a gun to get people to buy over valued American government bond, why over value because the asset it self Ie the bond issue them self are so far in the negative.

The only countries that are willing to submit to that is Japan, S. Korea, Philippines, and recently Ukraine.

This economist is talking nonsense. She said Chinese pay a lot of emphasis on freedom or speech and assembly. In fact, the Chinese are more interested in filing up their stomachs and having a roof on their heads and a job. They don’t want the kind of divisive politics that exist in the USA. They remember the days when the warlords f different provinces were fighting a civil war against the Kuomintang party of Chiang Kai Shek. I wonder whether this lady really know anything about China or has lived in China to really understand what is going on.

Elizabeth, you really do not know anything about China, really, I mean, Chinese people do complain, a lot, but thats just because complaining gets them some result, they are not against their government, especially when their lives are improving (long term improving I'm talking about here, not in 3-5 years terms, more like 10, 20 years). Can you imagin when I was a child, how poor we were, and how much better our lives have became? If you think some Chinese want to overturn their government, think there are 100,000 times more people want to keep the government and let it contiue doing its jobs.

@@Leoq-zk6wt China's best customer is America and it threatens them. I do not think China is stupid. On the contary. The issue is China needs to change it's economic model to stimulate more domestic demand. This would help the Chines people, help the Chinese economy and not involve so much exporting so not upset America and other western nations. But the potential political cost of this change seems to high a price for the CCP
