This is the same problem for a country having multiple cities with multiple subway/metro smartcard systems. Japan used around 20 years to have all their public transport across different cities to accept and work with all NFC-enabled smart card systems in the country (mainly Suica, Penguin, Pasmo, Icoca, and 10+ different others) China solved it by using another approach, instead of unifying existing metro smartcards, China made all metro, bus, high speed rail etc accepting Alipay and Wechat Pay as form of fare payments across hundreds of its public transport systems

Toll roads in Norway is just a camera over the road, no need for slowing down or to stop. The invoice comes in the online bank for you to accept and pay. The only disadvantage with toll roads is the cost, no queue or inconvenient payment methods.

We have this in the USA as well. Our car number plates in the USA aren't as easy for computers to read, using smaller letters and wildly different colors sometimes difficult to read with human eyes, so the states still prefer transponders, but usually will have the plate readers for when the transponder doesn't read correctly (think Mercedes S-Class with metallic glass) or the car doesn't have a transponder.

We do this in the US also on major highways. Smaller highways still use toll stations but even those you just have to drive slow through. Larger highways just take a picture and they charge your account, you don't slow down at all. At least with EZ Pass on the East Coast.

America has this but it usually costs toll authorities money to look up and process license plates (hence why the preference for transponders), further because US doesn't have a uniform license plate readability is an issue (every state has their own unique design, plus vanity plates mean that license plate readers have to do work)

They have that system here in the US, but it isn't "free." The local toll road, for example, is tolled with EZ-Pass, and if you don't have a pass, the pay-by-plate fee is significantly higher. I think a single round trip is $11 last I checked (using the plate). It's only a mile!!!

In the north east atleast we also have "pay by plate" where if you don't have a pass the cameras on the gantry identify your licence plate and you get a bill in the mail (with options to mail a cheque or pay online with a credit or debit card). Its really convient if you don't use toll roads often as you just drive for vacation and pay a higher rate. But if you drive on the mass pike or NY throughway alot then you can get an easy pass and save money in the long-run. I think this is a result of covid measures but it is definitely much nicer than paying change and having to stop every time you get on/off a toll road.

Fewer slow downs of traffic, fewer toll workers, they can send you a bill for a higher rate and charge additional fees if you don't already have their automatic payment setup. It make sense for there to be no cash/card option. I personally wouldn't want traffic to slow down for those paying with cash/card unless it was to a specific booth outside the main lanes of traffic.

Not realistic. Our population density is quite low overall as a country, and all our cities for the last 100 years have been designed around cars. Older cities and those that have high population density do fairly well with public transit, but once outside the city it falls apart and will never work for the reasons stated. I think the closest thing you'll ever see is something like a automated Uber/car share with ride sharing.

@@isaachayman9231 in Cali, “HOT Lanes” (High-Occupancy or Toll”) are free for carpooling, but you still need a Fastrak Flex transponder that lets you tell the system (by setting a switch on the transponder) how many people are in the car. If you don’t, it assumes you’re not a carpool and tolls you. That’s why the signs all say “FasTrak Required”.

Living in Illinois, I'm pretty happy with our toll system. We do have our own dedicated system (I-Pass) but like the video said, I-Pass is now compatible with EZ Pass systems. I took a road trip to Georgia in 2020 and everything worked fine. I also appreciate that I can get to Chicago from the suburbs without having to take the toll roads, and it only takes a few minutes longer. I feel like that allows for a good compromise; the state can still charge money for road repairs through the tolls on interstate roads. Those who can't afford the tolls or don't want to pay them still have reasonable routes to take. Since the state gets funding from the tolls, they don't have to jack up the gas tax. Our gas is already crazy expensive as it is, and I only imagine it'd be a million times worse if we got rid of all our tolls.

This is interesting to watch from the UK. Tax makes up a much larger proportion of the cost of petrol / gasoline, and so we have far fewer toll roads. I can only think of two toll roads which I've used recently - the Dartford Crossing (a tunnel and bridge crossing the Thames to the east of London) and the M6 toll (a less congested and privately built alternative to the M6). In the former case you pay online using your car's registration number, and in the latter case there are toll booths at the end of the road, and the standard form of payment is a contactless bank or credit card.

The UK also has a few weird toll bridges, like the one in Plymouth where you only pay in one direction thanks to county politics, and the one in Lincolnshire which costs about 40p to cross (probably set when that was actually worth something and never kept up with inflation) and probably costs more to collect than the toll is worth.

In Minnesota, the only toll roads are express lanes. So if you're in rush hour traffic, which understandably sucks, you can pay ~$1 and go into a special lane, skipping a good portion of the traffic. But there's no tolls on regular roads, just the ✨ express ✨. And even then, that's only during rush hour. The system gets money from those willing and able to pay for a convenience luxury, without unduly burdening everyone else.

I remember growing up & one of my friend’s brother got in trouble with his parents because he wrote a check for 80 cents. Driving back home from university he didn’t know there was a toll in the middle of nowhere. He said it was to far for him to drive back to somewhere with an atm & makes change and this was before most places accept cars. The Illinois toll system is unnecessarily complicated if you have to pay online. I don't have a car, so the once in a blue moon when I do drive (I borrow a car), I pay in cash. With the pandemic, the tolls for cash are closed because no one is there, so I'm forced to go through the tolls that require that device to automatically pay tolls. Anyways, when I go online to pay, I have to know what time and what tolls I passed through. The map online is missing some tolls that are on the highway exits, so that was frustrating, and it's hard to remember where I went and what time if I drove all day. LOL, sorry about the long rant. I feel better now.

@@ntatenarin Be sure to check the terms and conditions. Unless they changed recently, the PANYNJ charges a monthly account fee. Sure not a really big deal if you're hitting the toll booth every day (well, on principle it's still despicable), but if you are only going to use once or twice a year, those monthly fees could add up. And be sure to get home version for Illinois, so that you're considered an outsider (like I would be with my nyc transponder) and probably get charged the higher rate (I don't know what Illinois does for non-Illinois drivers like me).

1:26 toll roads are still travel roads. The toll is charged for those that use those specific travel roads to transport, hence the fee. If one does not transport over those roads, then one is not required to pay the fees to transport over them. Another however is that if one is using those roads to travel, why then is s/he using that road in a device registered to be used to transport?

However, tolls in Poland make sense due to international cross travel. Fuel tax fails when someone fills up outside of your border, drives on your roads without refulling, and leaves your sysem. Huh, that's a very interesting perspective. I hadn't thought about it, but thanks to the Schengen Area there's lots of international trucking going on in Europe and such traffic is hard on the roadways and thus in order to have the proper upkeep the only reliable way would be through tolls because you can't guarantee that they'll fill up in the country, although I'm sure they also do that every so often. So, how do they pay the tolls? Via cash, they take pictures of the license plates and sent the bill to where it was registered, pass system, or something else?

The "rare" instance of a person using a toll system outside of their region must happen thousands of times per year. You have to love these people who speak with utter confidence but are not at all understanding of what they speak. I am someone who regularly visits all four regions of the country in my car or a rental and the toll system has become a costly, annoying mess. Now with covid protocol few accept cash and now I have to wait months to find out if they have my current address so I can pay it. Then, if I go to the website to pay something with just my license plate (without them sending me an invoice) to try to get ahead of it they don't have a system set up to pay it on your own. So months pass, I forget, then I finally get my mail and a law firm is threatening me with not paying it. Toll roads should be illegal. Charge everyone for these in actual taxes what you need, don't make a complicated money grab for people who are already paying their taxes. And if the law to consolidate them was serious the language of the law would have read "do this by this date or all toll roads are free". Guarantee the states would figured a way to work together. Once I visited Chicago and their tolls were so high I've avoided visiting again. Tolls have a negative affect on people that this video doesn't talk about.

Those of us who rarely use toll roads get the shaft when we do. The cost goes up substantially if you don't have a pass, and many toll points now don't even take cash, so fees get added for toll-by-plate, at least here in central FL. The technology exists to eliminate toll passes. In Australia all toll road entrances and exits have gantrys with night vision cameras that identify your plates so they know exactly how much to bill you. I haven't seen an actual operational toll booth in years. It also means you can drive at full speed onto the motorway without stopping. The way billing works is pretty much anyone (from any state) can drive on any toll road and then go to a unified tollway payment website within 3 days, enter your number plate and pay the toll, otherwise the toll company sends you a bill in the mail + a "processing fee"/rort. If you prefer to "prepay" your toll you can make an account and add some credits to your numberplate before your journey or set it up to automatically debit your credit/debit card the toll as soon as the system logs that you've used a toll road.

When crossing the Hudson River it would add several 100 miles and hours of travel time to avoid a toll in NY. If you want to drive to New York City from New Jersey, you have to drive up to the Canadian border. If you want to drive to Staten Island there is no bridge without a toll. You just can’t avoid a toll on some trips.

Interoperability is just a matter of corporate will and market existence. What you need is a communication network nationwide and capability to compensate among participants through the banking or payment system. More interesting is the fact that every time you find a need and people willing to pay, then you have a business; the most expensive toll roads are whithin the Mexico City just to go from corporate zone to home avoiding the freeways that are stucked by traffic in rush hours. In Mx, since 2014, we have four different operators (three private and one government), they interoperate when they want. We need an independent clearing house in order to make it functional.

Car-dependent development is not financially sustainable. There are way too many miles of roads for each resident. Maintaining those roads isn't cheap - and often, raising gas and property taxes to insane levels is the only way to maintain that infrastructure. It would be much better to invest in public transit, bike infrastructure, and mixed-use neighborhoods which require far less driving.

I was so confused when I saw two toll routs on Oregon in the map part, I've lived there most of my life and have never encountered a toll road it's the reason why I was so pissed off when I started driving in Southern California because there were so many fast track (toll lanes) here that bog down traffic because the exit lanes for them are so horribly designed which causes people in those lanes to merge over into oncoming traffic in order to get to an offramp.

@@UserName-ts3sp I’ve never driven in the northeast. I live in Arizona and frequently drive in California and New Mexico, so I rarely see toll roads. Hell… It’s rare that I ever even pay to park. Where I’ve most experienced toll roads is Oklahoma. My mother lives in McAlester, and my sister in Tulsa. The most direct way between them is a tollway, and it’s a very nice very fast road with very limited access. My mother refuses to pay the toll, so she takes the old road and goes the long way through Eufaula and Muskogee. I tried both routes, and to me it was well worth the savings on time and gas to pay the toll. I never got a pass, though. There’s a machine where you get on that takes cash, and it’s only a couple bucks.

I guess this is just me being an old grouch who likes to hold onto outdated technology, but I really think that some states (cough cough, New York) removing the option to pay with cash makes the situation worse. If drivers from out of state without the appropriate tag have the option to pay cash, I think that at least makes the situation slightly less awful for interstate travel. But again, states like New York have been doing away with cash as an option altogether, which I think is kinda shortsighted.

I remember awhile back driving on the toll road that went parallel to the east of I-35 in Texas between Georgetown, TX (just north of Austin) and San Antonio to the south. It was an incredible road with speed limits up to 80mph but it was EMPTY! I got on at Georgetown and only went as far as the Austin airport where I was dropping somebody off but the round trip cost of using the toll road for that short distance was close to $40. This didn’t take me by surprise as I knew it would cost me but I wanted to try it out at least once. No way would I make this a part of my regular commute no matter how much time it saved me.

Notice the sign at 5:39. It's $3.00 for a aNY State EZPASS, but $7.50 for other EZPASS transponders or no transponder at all. That concept started a number of years ago so that I in NYC with the MTA ezpass get shafted if I drive on the NJ Turnpike, go over the George Washington Bridge (in to NYC) or on the Garden State Parkway. I haven't looked at those tolls recently, but they have peak/off-peak rates and iirc, I would end up paying peak rates no matter the time. Ok, let's see the rest of the video. So more tolls? Well, the problem, again, here in the NYC area, is how efficient are the agencies spending the money? The MTA here gouges us for the bridges and tunnels we go over or through because not only do they run those things, they run the buses and subways and railroads here and the tolls are calculated to generate a 'surplus' that is given to those divisions. A motorist wonders why? So, my wish is for the transponders to be equal so that ny and nj and the rest of the ezpass cabal are not gouging the other members (i.e., me when I drive out of nyc). Some comments mention the license plate charging method. Do you see the difference in toll rate in that sign? We're not talking nominal difference. The number of people paying tolls isn't likely to go up very much, if at all, to offset that cost. Florida is actually moving away from transponders and towards toll-by-plate. If that sees broad adoption, then interoperability will be a lot more likely.

MNPass isn’t really a toll system. They’re just HOV lanes you can use for free with 2+ people in the vehicle or pay a fee to drive in them with a single occupant. So the fees don’t apply universally. In Sweden, the thing is just the opposite. The taxes here are so high, that there are protests everytime a toll system is implemented. Well, it's not actually a toll system technically, rather a crowding tax, mostly within our biggest cities. The system reads the plates of the car, and automatically send a bill to the owner at every passage. It also are time dependent, meaning that the road is just taxated during the day, and most expensive during peak hours. The only true toll road in Sweden is the Öresund bridge/tunnel, over/under the Öresund straight, between Sweden and Denmark. And Ö isn't pronounced O, it's closest pronunciation is like i in "bird". It's actually an OE.

In New Zealand all toll roads are just billed to the license plate, and have been for decades. I'm in my mid 30s and have been driving since my mid teens, I've never had to slow down and/or drive through a booth. The licence plate cameras are just over head on the expressway, no need to slow down. You used to pay the bills at post offices (or even gas stations), but now just pay online. I don't understand why the US doesn't do this.. Like if you drive through a EZPass lane without a EZPass transponder, they're probably going to bill/track you via your licence plate anyway?

In California they stopped allowing cash through tolls bc of COVID so they use license plate to find your registration and send you the bill in the mail which you then use tonlog in online and pay. I think they should continue this but allow you to create an account and have a card on file to automatically pay the fee instead of getting a letter in the mail.

Lets see.... I have 'no tolls' set on my travels. I've paid two, yes two tolls in my last 10 years of driving across this country that weren't cash accepting. One on that very short I-80/90 basically an entrance ramp south of Chicago where you get trapped into it and the second just last month when I disobeyed said navigation and crossed MD into VA on 301 to avoid DC area at rush hour. The only 'toll' I willingly pay is on the WV turnpike, and that is because they continue with the old school method of accepting cash. Just thru there last week and watched two of the three cars in front of me hold up the lane. One the worker had to write the plates down, amazing that they had NO CASH and the other we watched dig for cash thru many things to get the 4.25 together AFTER the car in front did the previous thing and they had that time to look for the cash! THANKS TO YOU WV TURNPIKE for continuing to accept cash!!! There are SO MANY US highways and other roads you can travel almost as fast as and see so much more of this country without handing over more of your hard-earned money.

@@TheSimon253 Sweden and Norway have toll roads. To be fair, all of Europe has some form of toll roads (especially for trucks). Southern and Eastern Europe are full of toll roads

You showed oregon on there as a state with a toll I've lived here my entire life and never seen a toll booth outside an airport parking lot and I don't know a single person with a transponder

It’s so weird how it works in USA in Australia you get a tag when you register your car that just takes money out of your account
