Join me as I explore the unique cultural relationship between the Vietnamese and their sun-soaked beaches! In this video, we take an early morning stroll along Back Beach in Vung Tau, Vietnam, just as the sun is rising and the local community is kicking off their day. Watch as I delve into the fascinating reason behind why so many elder Vietnamese are out for their morning workout at this beautiful seaside location.
Discover how cultural perceptions of skin tone play a significant role in shaping daily routines. In Vietnamese culture, lighter skin is often associated with higher status and less manual labor, which leads to a general aversion to the sun. Yet, paradoxically, the Vietnamese love to exercise outdoors, especially at the beach.
See firsthand how this cultural dynamic results in a bustling beach scene in the cool morning hours, only to be deserted by the afternoon as the sun intensifies. Learn how the interplay of tradition, status, and lifestyle creates this intriguing pattern and offers a glimpse into the vibrant morning life at Back Beach.

It's not an exciting place but I love to come here to decompress, workout on the beach and get work done. When Saigon drives you crazy, this is the place to go!

The Russians aren't anything special one on one but it's really strange when you visit a beach in Vietnam or Thailand and it feels like you've gone to Moscow.

The skin-preference analysis is very spot on. However, I don't think this mentality is unique to just the Vietnamese, but Asians as a whole. I think through many many generations of Kings/Emperors culture have ingrained into their minds that status equals respect, and nothing gives you more status than money/"wealth". This is why you see them saving so long just to buy an iPhone. They think it gives them status, and to many of their people, it might be true, but to foreigners, especially Americans, it just isn't true. That said, I do think part of the reasons they prefer white skin is because of western influences, that constantly telling them white skin is beautiful, but that is slowly changing as westerners now prefer light-tan skin. I would be willing to bet if an isolated race/culture that have never been influenced by western marketing, they wouldn't care what color their skin is or their concept of beauty wouldn't be to prefer lighter skin.

I meant to mention the iPhone thing. I have a few cheap phones: an Oppo 18 and a Redmi Note 12. I can easily afford an iPhone but it doesn't do anything for me. I see all of these Viet kids who make a few hundred bucks a month rocking the latest Pro Max version. It's the first thing a Vietnamese girl asks you to buy her when you start dating - and my exit cue haha. Thanks for the insight.

The saying goes Vietnamese people are vampires but in actuality anyone that understands the weather would understand why even when I went back for vacationing I rarely ever come out after 12 PM I usually wait until 4:30 PM

Since I work vampire hours I can ususally avoid the heat. It's funny to see the Viets all bundled up in thick hoodie sweatshirts on their motorbikes when it's 100 degrees out tho.

Interesting. Is that a thing? I've heard from Viet American viewers who would like to go back now that Saigon is cool and Vietnamese tourism is cool, but they are second generation. I haven't met any boat people who have returned as I have met Cambodian refugees who have come back. I did talk to a Southern Vietnamese war vet who got on a boat then jumped off because he didn't want to leave his mom behind. He's still terrified of the communist party.
