This soon-to-be 18-year-old will be eligible to vote in the November general election, but has no say in who the Democratic nominee will be. Now she’s fighting to change the law.

In US news and current events today, meet Ella Yitzhaki, a senior at a California high school and who is advocating to lower the voting age to 17. She is passionate about politics and can list every democratic candidates stance on a myriad of issues. But as Yitzhaki looks to the 2020 presidential election, she is frustrated as she is will be 17 when the primary vote for president happens and 18 when the general election occurs. Yitzhaki argues that she should be able to vote in the primary if she'll be allowed to vote in the general election.
The bill ACA-4 would authorize a United States citizen who is 17 years of age, is a resident of the state, and will be at least 18 years of age at the time of the next general election to vote in any intervening primary or special election that occurs before the next general election. The bill has already passed in the house in August and is up for a vote in the Senate in February 2020.
Studies have shown that the earlier someone starts voting, the more likely it is that voting will be a lifelong habit for them.
If ACA 4 passes in the CA state senate this year, it will be on the November 2020 ballot for voters.
Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island also have bills pending to lower the voting age 17 in the primaries.

I think it's just a fabulous idea! Why not let kids vote, I mean they have so much life experience and are in no way impressionable at all. We as adults never look back at our youth and think we were stupid as heck and lucky to be alive. I mean a criminal government would never indoctrinate a voting population that has to listen to them 8 hours a day. I think it's just a great thing! Wow we are really moving in the right direction in this country!

Most American 16yrs old aren't as aware as Greta Thunberg. Most are in a terribly confused state just dealing with their hormones and probably naive enough to become nothing more than extra votes for some enthusiastic high school teachers who will convince them of their viewpoints. But if they've decided to let 18 or old vote I the General election they may as well let them vote in the primaries. Actually an 18 yrs old might actually do the research many working adults don't have the time and energy to do.

While I agree with most of the comments about abiding by the cutoff line that the law sets, this isn't a foreign concept and doesn't mean that certain laws can't be tweaked or revised. Many states allow 17-year-olds to vote in primaries, as long as they turn 18 in time for the general election. They should get to choose the candidates that they'll eventually vote for. 17-year-olds being allowed to vote in primaries is a bipartisan idea in both red and blue states.

Voting age & the Legal age to be categorised an Adult must be the same in any Nation. If you're an adult then you must be allowed to Vote. 18-years is a good age-limit to categorize some as an Adult & then allow them to Vote. As till 18-years of age, many individuals must have completed their High-School & joined the work force or higher Education to get a glimpse of reality. After 18-years of age, an individual must be categorised as an Adult & now the State can ask/demand the adult citizen to contribute towards the Nation's growth rather than being dependent upon his/her family & State.

Illinois already does this! As a high schooler (though I won't be 18 by the general so I can't vote in the primaries), I think it's great. Depending on your town I guess, it encourages serious conversation about political candidates. Personally I disagree with so many of my peers who will be able to vote this time, but that's what democracy is and should be.

@@heatherdeladurantaye3121 well, I can agree with you about that, but I really do hope that it's responsible voters making those educated, well informed, and mature decisions about the candidates who will represent the best interests of all the people (for the sake of the common good and for all the right reasons). I believe that children will just naturally do whatever their mothers and or caregivers permit them to do. Therefore, a single mom with 4 kids can maliciously coerce them to vote her way or suffer her wrath. In my opinion, that's like giving 1 person 5 votes per household. Kids under 18 can't even be legally held to honor or sign a contract without legal consent from their parents and other powers to be. The average decent smart person isn't fully mature enough until around the age of 25. On the other hand, if you're mature enough to legally declare your independence from your parents, then maybe you should be able to vote. We can even argue that kids are high risk targets for subliminal propaganda and suggestive rhetoric from bad actors because they can hear frequencies that their older parents can't hear. And that's not too much of a longshot, either. I'm just saying.

Good for her but that is not going to happen. Someone mentioned in the comments that the youth is informed. I agree because of the access of information which is great. But until you have had to deal with some real world responsibilities, I don't know if you fully understand what is really going on. Like paying bills, not living with your parents. That goes for adults who have not been responsible for themselves as well. When I was 18 and voted, I was in college and living at home and saw life a certain way. As I started taking care of myself, I looked at laws and see the people I voted for differently. It's so easy to jump to one side when you have little experience. I used to vote republican based on my limited experience. Then I experienced more, read more, payed attention more and I despise the Republicans. They rationalize straight up BS. Democrats ain't no better, coming into minority communities talking about change, get your vote, and then you don't see them. I am more progressive with today's generation because I understand that the the generations before have not done a good job in creating equality in America and they have allowed capitalism to run so rapid and unchecked that it has now cost people's basic needs to be unaffordable and that's nonsense.

Most voters are ignorant, obviously the best solution is to add even more ignorant people instead of changing our system to ensure that votes are driven by educated and informed opinions, rather than who’s the most popular at whatever moment in time. This girl obviously has her heart in the right place but she’s focused entirely on the wrong problems and the wrong “solutions“.

Wait until 18 so you can gain more perspective on life and educate yourself on who to vote for rather than being told who to vote for by their parents. Not a good idea.

@censored girl privilege? Last time I checked it was a "civic duty" don't they say "the right to vote" not "the privilege?" Such an unamerican thing to think taxpayers shouldn't have the least say in their government for any reason

@censored girl id say 21 MAYBE. Thats too long of a time to take no action in the course of your countrys future. All of the other age groups with the same outdated mindsets would steamroll everyone else.

You seriously think that people 17 3/4 are dumb, but 1/4 later they are smart? You need more "education and perspective on life"

It’s not about intelligence. It’s about experience. Children lack the experience to make well informed decisions.

You could say the same thing about some adults that would vote against their interest and their children's future.

We don't know how to make good, well informed decisions because we don't have control over what goes on in our lives during this period of time, adults usually dictate what goes on until we are considered as one, then we fail multiple times when we are treated as an adult because we haven't recieved this form of respect, freedom, and treatment. That's also the whole point of "Trial and Error", failing over and over again to being able to master a skill, you can't gain much experience without failing.

@@Icey7405 so the way they learn from trial and error is by not engaging in the trial so they can make errors? Lmfao what?

I think that's absolutely absurd. The law should remain as it is which states you should be 18 in order to vote, no debate necessary.
