South Indian Bengali speaking here...bengali born in Kerala, brought up in Tamilnadu , worked in Pune , Mumbai , Bangalore I totally relate to this podcast. I don't know about now, but we had to learn Sanskrit as a compulsory subject till I think 4th or 6th class and since then I've never found any language difficult to pick (at least rudimentary), even German and Spanish become easier to understand....totally support Sanskrit as a national language. Jai Bharat!

During my college days, in Bhopal and Delhi in 90s, telling anyone that I go to Mandir or that I pray used to be considered so lowly that other students would see you with disdain and will laugh at you. I used to take caution to not mention anything about my religious beliefs or my prayers. Few of the students got converted to Christianity and without changing name would always be talking about what great thing they have done.

Our problem is with our English medium school students who have gained extra mileage because of the knowledge of the English language, especially with the Britishers/ American accent. When they could look down upon their own natives and get extra support and designations because of this. Can you believe in the 40s up to the 70s to get a job one just needed the knowledge of good English language.
