I started with Cotman and I have to say, if I had started with Daniel Smith and 100% cotton paper, I would have been too timid to really splash around and learn. I know all the sayings: “Don’t be precious” “You’re worthy of your supplies” but when facing paints that cost so much per tube and paper that is dollars, not pennies, per sheet, I tend to lock up. Cotman met me where I was as beginner and let me paddle around without worrying about using up my nice supplies. I use professional paints now but my confidence was built up with student grade supplies. Thanks for the video!

This is such an eloquent way of describing the pro-grade versus student-grade initial dilemma! You've captured it so well. Thank you for leaving this thoughtful comment, I appreciate you :)

I bought that cotman set first and hated it so much i quit painting for a year. The DS split primary set i bought a year later helped me understand color mixing which freed me to be able to paint whatever i wanted.

For sure, we all have our paths to making it work. Was it the colors you didn't like, or how it painted? For me, I feel the opposite, I don't like dealing with squeezing from tubes, the overnight curing, the needing to find a palette if I want to take them with me: these barriers to entry put me off DS tubes (which is what the prof warned me could happen). Thank you for commenting, even though we differ in experience I love to hear from others and I'm sure it will help someone :) Be well!

Great advice in this video. I certainly should have stuck with the basics more in the beginning. I love how you switch up the different shots in the video too :)

Thank you, that's so nice of you to say. It is always fun to think of different shots to add, I enjoyed it. I know...I wish someone just put these two things in my hand and said, Just start here, don't buy so many things. We live and learn (and share), I suppose ;)
