4:46 No, the Enigma code was already broken before the war. When Turing sat down to his work he knew how the code worked. His breakthrough was creating a machine that made breaking the codes from the improved enigma machines much more efficient.

@@lilskys6578 Good amount of our war heroes got shot through the back of the head or hanged after the war. In a collective memory we neither got credit for Enigma nor any rememberance for those treated so badly after the war. So Mr. Turing did better in that regard.
@dWFnZWVr3 жыл бұрын
Not quite. Turing and his team at Bletchley park broke the naval enigma, which was revised from the original enigma that Polish code breakers cracked. The Naval Enigma signals used different ciphers, each with its own daily key (rotor order, ring settings, plugboard connections and ground setting). The principal cipher was Heimisch (Heimische Gewässer - known to Bletchley Park as Dolphin) for U-boats and surface ships in 'Home Waters', including the Atlantic. It was completely random, changing daily. What Alan Turing and his team had to do in less than 24 hours, Polish code breakers had months to achieve. Every day they had to start from scratch as the configurations were randomised. So, with all due respect, Alan Turing did far more than just “build a machine to make cracking codes more efficient”. Polish code breaking efforts were redundant at this point, the dynamic properties of the naval enigma meant the Germans deemed it unbreakable. The two achievements are poles apart-in scale, importance, difficulty and complexity. The battle of the Atlantic all lay in the hands of the team at Bletchley park; and Churchill was worried more about that than he was the Battle of Britain. The original enigma was static, it never changed its configuration. The naval enigma changed every 24 hours. The two were completely different implementations with different ciphers, configurations, plugboard connections, rotor orders and ring settings. The only commonality between the two is that they both use the word “enigma” in their names-nothing more.
