Another great interview and a super-interesting interviewee with lots of great insights into the systems in Singapore, the US and elsewhere. What I really appreciate is not just the quality of the interviewees in this channel but also the fact that Max asks good questions and allows them to speak without interruption. This may seem a simple thing to do, but trust me, I’ve seen too many interviews where the interviewer constantly interrupts his/her guest by asking follow-up questions or adding their two cents worth to the comments being made. These interviewers have an agenda and love the sound of their own voice. Not the case with Max, so for that, thumbs up to you.

The primary schools here are top notch. But we parents have to become their personal tutors too. It’s wonderful that Rick is aware of accepting and respecting different ethnicities into our lives. And how languages can open many doors. The world today is open to many possibilities and if our children integrate easily with most ppl regardless of of race, language etc this itself is the best skill and gift for them. Communication with others is key to a successful life. Great interview with good pointers. I love the phrase integrated diversity….👍👍🌺

1. ___________________ When Lee Kuan Yew became Prime Minister, the country had likely to have accumulated economic benefits from its 140 years under British colonial rule prior to that. The key points are: - As a major trading entrepôt strategically located along key maritime trade routes, Singapore generated significant economic revenues and profits from its role in facilitating the flow of goods, commodities, and resources between Europe, India, and China. - Over the 140 years of British colonial control, Singapore was able to leverage its geographic advantages and build up its port infrastructure, trade facilitation services, and position as a regional commercial hub. - This allowed Singapore to accrue substantial economic resources and capital during the colonial period, even if its economy remained relatively undiversified and dependent on the entrepôt trading model. - When Lee Kuan Yew took over as Prime Minister in 1959, he was able to draw upon this existing economic foundation established under the British to help kickstart Singapore's rapid industrialization and economic transformation. So Singapore had likely taken for granted the economic resources from its long history as a British colony and trading hub. I feel that some expats or PR with families stayed and worked in Singapore for the sake of their children to get an early till high school education in Singapore due to its good education system. Then they would return to their home countries in the US or elsewhere and send their children to colleges/universities in the US or other prominent universities.

@@eyhtwozed2606 that must have pleased you immensely. It is ok, China is restructuring the economy from low costs to high technology manufacturing. Of course the effort of US to restrain China has dampened economic growth somewhat. Hey, 5% GDP growth for 1H 2024 is very good considering that the property sector bubble has burst and it was one-third of GDP in previous years. China deliberately burst the property bubble before it gets even worst. Having said that, their trade surplus everyday, yes everyday is getting close to 3 US$ billion and the US trade deficit daily is 2 US$ billion. On top of that the US budget deficit is also growing. China has no such problems, and no homeless problems that we see in the US. So, on balance, it is doing extremely well. Don’t you agree?

There is no sense in living in a country with your family when the government doesn't recognize dual citizenship. Your life can be ruined one day. All that talk about schools, etc., you can get the same approach somewhere else with a few additional tutors, and it's not worth it. Try explaining to your child when you need to leave the country because of a visa issue. Needless to say, racism and modern slavery in Singapore are real, but you cannot talk about them openly or you will be kicked out of the country. It's a utopia for sure. Moreover, what's the point of pushing your kids and ruining their childhood for the sake of government goals? We see the same problem in Korea and China, where parents are obsessed with kids' grades and give them many psychological problems later.

@@perfectace60 Your logic is false, as is the internet slang you used in your commentary. Why not use proper English with commas and sentences? When you think logically, you compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. Comparing the rules for traditional marriage, such as in Islamic law where men can have up to four wives, is not relevant to the case of having dual citizenship or more, as you are comparing immigration rules. When you say, "we don’t need uncommitted citizens" - who are "we"? Local people who prefer the dictatorship of the ruling family without the option of free elections, any criticism of the government, unprotected migrants from India or the Philippines, and illegal drug selling in places where the city does not have cameras while the police cover it? When immigrants come to the country, they are supposed to pay taxes and commit. When the government does not allow second citizenship, it means they want to control people as property and not allow them to escape from their rules. If you have two places to live and can stand up and tell someone who is doing something inappropriate, it will stop the other side to some extent. People must have a choice and not be government property. Period.
