Johnny.. this is a real issue.. I want an electric Van.. but look at the price. It makes no sense. The Nissan ENV 200 is only slightly more expensive than the diesel version at £20k. But all the other can makes are charging double or triple the price of a diesel... Why.. can someone like you do some investigation or even just ask them why they are so expensive.. the LDV electric Van is £60k. The diesel version is £17k. Renault master £65k and no rapid charger. Why?

@curtinj984 жыл бұрын
@@elliottslab the extra copper is needed to get the HV power from the front of the car to the driven wheels. In this case to the back of the vehicle. With a conventional car/van the highest voltages rarely leave the engine bay. The copper is also used in the electric motors and charging systems. As for the other components, they will get cheaper over time. But the modern EV vehicle is still in its infancy. There are multiple standards, and none of them have gained a dominance that will allow costs to be driven down by scale. And the EV sector is still a small slice of the entire market. So each standard is a small slice of a small slice. Plus, manufacturers are desperate to be on the right side of legislation. They want something in place to show governments they are acting. They are in the "we must do something" mode. Costs will be addressed as standards standardise, and volumes increase.

Great piece Jonny. An EV with an ICE?. This is great, the technology and it’s built in Britain. Prices from 46.5k plus VAT, £500 a month 9 months initial payment. The load it can carry is 800KG, a Trafic, Transit or Transporter is average 1200KG, the blue van with the Tevo racking must be close to that weight. @Spud Chuffington jones I buy vans - I care about both those things (total running costs and emissions). Strange to admit in public that you are a sociopath and don't care at all about kids or the planet. I mean I understand people who say 'well I'd like to but I have to buy second hand and really can't afford it yet'. But people who go 'no, I don't give fuck about choking your kids, and ruining the world'. Well that's just weird. What sort of person would say that?
@acelectricalsecurity4 жыл бұрын
@@Wookey. at the moment the running costs do appear to be cheaper. But that's only because there's no fuel duty, vat is only 5% and they weren't paying road tax that could have changed when road taxing got changed. The UK government aren't going to let that go forever as soon as enough people have them we will see how they will cash in. They could make people have a separate meter installed then get them to fill a form every year and Bill them, or simply, charge them about £2k a year but they will do something. When I first started driving diesel Vans in the early 90's it was less than half the cost of petrol now look at it there's an example. Also these vehicles couldn't exist without oil, then there's the impact of the mining for the materials, and some of the mines had children mining. We just have to accept no matter what we drive,and what may or may not come out of the back someone will be affected.

Great video, my dad drives a small Royal Mail van. I mentioned how Royal Mail keeps doing trials of EVs and never seems to invest in a sizeable fleet. His answer was they generally don't keep the vans very long for various cost cutting reasons. I was saying they're an ideal case use for EV vans and could really help the UK commercial EV industry. What you said about the materials and warranty being a reason for companies to buy and keep them longer will hopefully see RM show more confidence in this type of vehicle. My dad is a lil sceptical about himself owning one so such a move could prompt the workers to understand the positive reality.

Whilst watching this, my mind went straight to...... ......This would make an excellent base for a small campervan (camping car). I'd pick the Ultima as the base for it with one sliding door and have the option of a diesel as the ICE recharge unit, as well as both sets of charging plugs at the front. A larger, higher roofed, LWB version would be even better for this. Also, as the body panels are composite, side panels could be moulded for use for campers in-house and added on the production line with a bare interior shell, then sent to third party manufacturers for finishing, or for custom fitment by the company itself off the line (like what GM did with the GMC Motorhome in the 70's). Throw some solar panels on the roof, a small slimline air-conditioner, a side mounted awning as well as beefed up suspension and you're golden! Range extended EV campervan? Yes please!

Why does no one remember that this is how modern locomotives have worked for decades? Engine drives a generator, which then feeds the traction motors. The coach built van body was mounted behind the drivers door pillar, the nearside luggage space had a sliding door fitted and a seal behind that. The drivers mate would sit there and count the newspapers for the next newsagents, jump out off the sliding door and sprint into the shop. Saturday classified football results would be issued in the three London papers and the first van to the area sold the most papers. How do I know all this well I was a van runner for The Star and we held the records for Saturday sales to North London. Altho this is a smaller capacity, the setup as is, lends itself to city (and close to city) borne businesses. This would make a great van for example for rapid deliveries (well...maybe not in London...but ye get my idea). Food deliveries, priority mail, flower shops, heck...this could even be a fast response medical/fire fighting vehicle with a few tweaks (tho i'm unsure of what the laws and regulations are regarding such vehicles, IE, if you're allowed a vehicle like this). TLDR, it being smaller, is actually a bonus point in front of the competition.

Would be good to option it as a full ev with an additional battery in place of the ICE generator? Looks good for a camper conversion too...

Wait for a 20-30% increase in cell density, together with a corresponding decrease in price, then the floodgates open.

Excellent looking van with some incredible options. Possibly a great vehicle for your jobbing electricians and trades person

The company I work for runs a typical van for 150,000 miles, typically over 5 years. In this time a £30k van loses 95% of its value and is pretty much finished. You would have to stretch the lifespan to at least 8 years to make the costs comparable and the only way to make any fuel cost savings would be to charge overnight and during the day for the return trip, not very easy at the moment. Having said that, it's a much higher quality piece of kit than our current baked bean tin on wheels, so I hope the fleet team are considering these.

Johnny, surprised to hear you say Aluminium does not corrode, it does, very much so, and is just as dependent on corrosion protection as steel is.

Hi Jonny, can you ask Geely? to make a people carrier for families. I reckon that would sell well. Great video Jonny.

That factory is playing havok with the camera, that white van is brighter than the sun.

Great vid mate cheers for that... I do have a concern with the (very commendable) ethos of buying vehicles for longer use but there's a huge drawback to that & that is technology itself.. Things are moving fast & today's cutting edge can go blunt very fast. That van certainly has flexible use options though doesn't it... First thing I've seen in ages that makes practiced sense 👍

I can fully understand this is a stepping stone. Lots of these workman are to ICE minded for full BEV. Great explanation on the abilities. Looks pretty big too. I think it's a Caddy eater in that urban restricted area's.

Cracking and informative watch Jonny. Nice one, and like the Taxi, a game changer. Nice steelies too. Almost regal. Keep them coming bud.

It should definitely come with a few 240 V outlets for powering micro wave, coffee machine, compressor, spot welder, charging tools etc that a tradesman can need. If it can charge at 11 kW it should be able to discharge at that rate too.

I like it Jonny if I was in the market for a small van. This would probably suit. Yes the price is high but as you said the warranty and running cost levels it out

driven 5 full size Ford vans , a 1973, '74, '78, '87 and a '98 over 30 yrs, don't like any of the new vans aesthetically, that's one of best loking vans seen in quite awhile

This is the first electric vehicle I like, but I can’t see tradesman running to buy one of these as of the load space and price 50k for a van is a big ask of someone who’s having to make big payments on other aspects of there life and business. I also love the fact they use “built to last” as a sales pitch they should ask tradesmen and delivery drivers how many miles they’ve done I know of several with over 200k miles and they’re still going strong, with the right maintenance any vehicle can last forever.

Maybe the RX should be a delete option with the choice for a frunk or extra battery module there. Mail vans should never need petrol. As courier van, a little bit every day perhaps.

Jonny - Please stop using the shaky camera transition effect. That left-right-left comes close to triggering a visual disturbance response in some people, similar to a strobe or flashing light. Thank you. I love your channel.

It’s ideal for the service industry I once owned, cost wouldn’t put me off as we used to run VW 4 wheel drive vans in Ireland and they 18 years ago cost €22000 When looking at the price you have to remember that all the VAT on the van is reclaimed if your vat registered, most companies are.

Interesting times, and I remember back when I was 14 yrs old, on my knees with my head under the bonnet of an original mini, changing the points and plugs and scraping the shit off the distributor cap. Them where the days.
