This is such a crucial development! 👍 For the EV transition to truly take off, it's not enough to just sell new EVs. Many people keep driving their existing cars for decades, either because they are fond of them or because they can't afford a new car, or both. EV conversion kits should therefore become a common and viable option for the masses. EV conversion should become just as commonplace and normal (if not moreso) as LPG conversions have been. The EV conversion industry would also form a much-needed lifeline for the many car mechanic shops that are in danger of going out of business due to the drastically lower maintenance requirements of EVs. It would be a win-win. I applaud Volkswagen for offering this possibility and I love the creative hack of hiding the CCS charge port behind one of the rear lights. 😊 I hope many other companies will start filling this void as well. I also hope that Volkswagen's new MEB platform will be modular enough to allow for EV conversion of many more models, both Volkswagen and other brands alike. Thanks for covering this promising and important topic! 😃
@quillmaurer65635 жыл бұрын
What I wonder is if this conversion, including labor, would save any money versus an all-new car. Classics make sense to convert as people want to keep their old cars but modernize them, but it might not make sense as a mass-market solution. This could cost more in the end than a new E-Up but people will still prefer their beloved Bug converted to electric over an E-Up. But most people I think would prefer to spend less or even slightly more for a new car than a conversion of their existing one. If the kit could be made more cheaply, and with less extensive modifications, I could see it though. Maybe someday batteries and motors will be so small and light that good range could be gotten from batteries that fit into the space where the fuel tank, engine, and transmission were. Depending on car configuration, have the (very small) motor fit where the stock gearbox had been, fill the space where the engine and fuel tank had been with batteries. Put the charging port where the gas filler neck had been. As many other pieces as possible remain unchanged. That swap, especially by a shop that has done several of the same swap, could probably be done in just a few hours, and if the kit could be made for less than say $15-18k, so less than $20k out the door, I think it would be very popular.

Like many folks out there, I just can't afford $30k + for a new e-vehicle and quite frankly now that I'm retired, I stay pretty close to home so a 150km range vehicle is all I really need anyway. If a mechanical engineer like myself could do a relatively inexpensive conversion from a kit, that sounds doable. Interesting idea! I might someday consider this with my '73 Super Beetle, but have a few questions. First off, what years/models will this be available for? The one shown appears to be a ... okay not US spec as it has what would be in the US 71-72 taillights but 73+ Super windshield. Would it be available for any year, or just certain specific ones? Would probably work for me actually given what's shown. How much of the original suspension is changed? How much weight is added? One of the biggest challenges I'd see of an electric conversion of any gasoline car, but especially one as light as the Beetle, is that for decent performance and range the weight would be much greater than it was originally, which would require major suspension mods and likely structural reinforcement to handle properly. Full floor pan swap would accomplish that though. How does this effect things like performance, handling, ride height, ground clearance, and so on? Basically, is the resulting car any good? The 125 mile range sounds a bit limiting, will future versions have better range as battery technology advances? I probably wouldn't go for this as-is, but maybe a future version will appeal to me more. Overall sounds like they listened to what the classic aficionados wanted. Not a "new" beetle based on the "platform" of a modern vehicle, but a modernization upgrade of the original, in fact retrofitting originals instead of building something new that can never be what the originals were. Other things I'd like to see? As well as classics, maybe conversion kits for cars that have a huge number on the road still and a lot of people are fans of, even more recent models. Things like Subarus mainly, I know a lot of people who love their Subis and would love to convert them to electric. Of course Subaru has yet to offer any new electric cars either. I wonder how the cost of doing something like this would compare to an all-new car, it might not make economic sense, only to keep an existing classic, so there might not be as much business case for converting people's regular recent-model cars.

Absolutely brilliant that VW has got behind an electric chassis swap for vintage beetles! It's a little late for me, but I've built more than a dozen VW-based vehicles, and a chassis/body swap is not really such a difficult project. This would take out a lot of the stumbling blocks people come across doing something like this, especially starting with a new chassis and all the electronics pre-assembled. "I am curious as to which automaker you'd like to see offer such a service next." Easy answer: ALL OF THEM!

My wife would probably love a classic Mustang conversion. :-)

All of them! All of the automakers should copy this example. There are millions of car owners who refuse to part with their classic Mustang, Vette, Charger, etc. Someday there will be some drastic legislation banning hydrocarbons. People who "won't part with my baby" must be addressed. This would make a marvelous preemptive approach.

I’d love a factory conversion for my NSU Ro80 another Volkswagen Group product.

I would love to see a Citroën 2CV Charleston or a Sahara. A DS would also be lovely. Fiat X1/9 or a Alfa Romeo spider. Renault five or a SAAB V4. Volvo Amazon, a old Honda or a Accord. Datsun 240/ 280z. There are so many nice old cars who need an upgrade to electric.

I know it would be virtually impossible, but I'd love to see an electric Studebaker - more specifically one like the Studebaker Dictator or Studebaker President. A pickup truck in a similar body style would be awesome as well.

How much does it cost this package to convert the classical VW Battle of the 60s-70s to an electric car? Does anyone have an idea about the price?
