True, and while its greed of the market, its nice to know parts are an option rather than just selling the car and hoping it doesn’t break. We can learn to fix them as you know, but i agree the prices are frustrating. At least we have parts available and don’t have to pay for labor if we research to gain skill. Trying to word it correctly to respect your point while respecting their means of production as well.

That's awesome ..I actually picked up a xl5 slash 4x4 and upgraded it to a ultimate with all the red stuff and a black lcg chassis almost identical to your build I love it .I threw my velenion in I bought back in like '07 when they first came out..still ripping strong that motor and esc have wore out 4 rcs in its lifetime ..sets it apart from everybody else with slashs at the track

love my slash 2wd. i converted it to LCG with lots of hop ups and a better motor ESC combo +servo. ive been driving it on an 1:8 scale offroad racetrack many times and nothing ever broke on it.

I have to agree with Mark on this one, I picked up a slash 4x4 vxl fox edition that was only run on the street twice with a new zeee 3s battery for $275 and put the gtr shocks on it and when I took it out to the desert on 3s I was blown away at how fast and how good it handled for the money spent. Even if I do the tekno axles on it like I planned and some small upgrades Im still not out a ton of money

If hobby shops do it correctly, they should be mentioning the fact that the ultimate comes with all the upgrades on it. The shop I work at in FL (Classic RC Company) we always mention to new customers that they some with the upgrades. The ultimate is probably the most sold car in our inventory

I’ve had a lot of customers that couldn’t afford to drop a lot of cas all at once & wanted to buy there vehicle and add hop ups that where most important to them as money allowed. That’s completely cool. Yea, Mark is correct, the Slash ultimate is a good choice if you want all the bling and performance some of those part provide up front. Every Slash is a killer R/C at a killer price.

Went with a brushed 4x4. Plan on building an awesome basher and I like the idea of me building it the way I want even though I’ll eventually be spending more than what I paid for the truck. So I just went with brushed instead of a Vxl or an ultimate.

I got the brushless slash 4x4 non ultimate back in 2013-2014, and it didn't come with any upgrades, but I have recently installed the LCG chassis, chassis brace, better servo saver, new wheels, fresh shocks and lastly I've done aesthetic upgrades to add more color and coolness

Hey Mark, I have the Orange and black one, and omg it's like Murica but in Orange, and this thing is a freaking Tank, I mean I've rolled by accident because I bash it on 3s, full throttle it pops wheelies on 3s, If you're a beginner and your bashing this upgraded version on 3s, I recommend you ease in the throttle. I got 50mph on stock gearing with a 3s Lipo, that ain't bad for stock gearing on 3s, It's definitely fast for being stock Gearing on a upgraded Lipo, 50mph, that's honestly really fast for this truck, Like I said it pops wheelies. Anyways I've rolled it flipped it by accident for going to fast, and dang this thing is definitely more stronger than a normal Slash 4x4 VXL. Like I said it's built like a Tank, It's taken all my wrecks, and not a single part broken!? Hey Mark you also forgot one thing the Front and rear arms are upgraded to, they are a little bit more Beefier than the Normal Slash 4x4 VXL. And I bash mine in a big field, so I know what I'm doing and how to control it on 3s, and it turns sharper to which is nice, and It' rides smoother when going over bumps because of the LCG Chassis. Anyways I agree with Mark this is defiantly the better bang for your buck, it's expensive but you get a lot of metal on this upgraded one, and that makes it a little bit more indestructible!? Hope this helps some people if they're looking for a Trophy truck. It's defiantly my number 1 car besides my Axial Capra!? Thanks Devin.

Heads up. I suggest dust bonnet with lcg chassis. Had stones wedged between driveshaft twice. Damage once.

I must say... Though I don't like slashes. I had a slash 4x4 ultimate for a few months. I literally couldn't break anything on the car. I beat the living heck out of it. I killed a few spurs and that's it. It handled super good. Super fast out of the box. I can't flaw it.

Yo Mark Traxxas makes red bodies for the GTR's you just gotta swap them out, they also make a red center driveshaft to match the chassis brace

I think the Slash is one of the best vehicles to buy due to so many parts available for it and it's a great platform. I wish Traxxas sold kits for the Slash 4X4, even if it was a brushed version or a blank slate. I know Traxxas had changed the business with the RTR model, but for a lot of people starting in the hobby I find they stay longer in the hobby when building kits, so they know how to repair and upgrade their own vehicles. Look at Tamiya, they have a great following due to their kits and the fun of building them. Talk to any Tamiya fan and they love to talk about building their kits.

I had an ultimate and sold was kicking myself before the buyer was out of my driveway took the money that i got from it saved up a month or so and went and bought another ultimate ..i now have an ultimate a slash 4x4 vxl with oba a 2wd slash vxl and a slash drag truck and just bought a slash 2wd vxl with the 272r transmission

OK iam confused mark, so out of curiosity why wouldn't you just use the regular 4x4 vxl version instead of pulling off all the goodies ect from the ultimate if you planned on just stripping everything off of the ultimate anyways....after you strip it your basically starting with the regular vxl anyways.? Honestly, the biggest issue with this car, barring the issues with Traxxas as a company, is the price tag. It's the same price as the TENACITY TT, which while not quite as fast out of the box* (asterisk because you have provide additional equipment to get the advertised 60+ MPH) is an otherwise more capable vehicle out of the box - to get the same kind of handling out of a Slash 4x4 Ultimate you'll need to do a significant amount of tuning and setup. The only real upside to the Slash 4x4 Ultimate over the TENACITY TT is aftermarket parts support but, well, the Slash 4x4 Ultimate doesn't get as much use out of that since it's already been heavily upgraded out of the box. Honestly, though, that's par for the course for Traxxas. A lot of their cars are either more expensive than comparable models or as expensive as higher-end models from other brands.
