Used the Scottish Government’s interest free loan to get the 38kwh Ioniq last year. Loan needs to be paid over six years and think I’d be quite happy to keep the car over that length of the time. It’s been fantastic to own and drive.

The ioniq is my first EV and I am starting to realise I have been spoilt in many aspects that will be hard to replicate in my next EV when my lease is up. Especially the efficiency, I've average 4.6 miles per kwh over my 14 months. One side note, the fabric seats in the lower spec (premium) are more comfortable. My mum has the leather seats in the premium SE and I find them rock hard in comparison

As an owner of a 28kWh Ioniq there are a few negatives with the 38kWh model. Slower charging speed is the big one. Some of the 38kWh cars in Australia are subject to a battery replacement recall, which could be viewed as a positive since you might be in line for a brand new battery pack.
@littlebluepanda3943 жыл бұрын
The drop in the charge speed is a bit of annoyance, but there are a lot of other positives (Hyundai giveth and they taketh away). I didn't buy the Ioniq in the end because I got a good deal on an MG5, but it was a close thing and both versions are really nice.
@EvClaireScott3 жыл бұрын
The slower charging isn't a issue. We still see 42-48kw when low and warm. Plus the owners of 38kw ioniq need to stop less times than a 28kw owner as we can travel further on our charge. So I really don't see the problem as such that people keep saying it puts them off! Here in the UK most chargers are 50kw rapids so no one will charge any faster. The 38kw is fantastic and in summer for us is a genuine 200 miles car. #windknife as its come to be known 😆
@MrStefanVi3 жыл бұрын
Correct due to the slow charinging Speed the new ioniq is slower on longer Trips than the old one the useable capacity ist basicly the Same If you want to have the "full" charging Speed. Nice Car If you so Not have to recharge..

Hi, I own the 28kwh Ioniq, usually get 5.? M/kWh, drives like a dream. I know what you mean about the tailgate, I miss a rear wiper however the chunky bar across the middle stops headlight dazzle at night from the ridiculous blinding headlights. If you are considering that battery size you need to check the battery origin as there is a global recall on certain Ioniq and kona batteries, allegedly 🤔

James is a very lucky fella! In terms of the car. I was very impressed with the Ioniq 28kwh and the 38kwh is just an extension of this. I don't know how Kia and Hyundai can get the efficiency of their motors so high when other companies (VW, Peugeot etc) can get them not so high? If I could charge at home the Ioniq would be perfect for me, you can get a 28kwh for around £14k and, of course, if you can find them, you can get a charge at 77kw on a 100kw charger! The only problem for me (and its a small one) is you cannot preheat the interior while unplugged - which is a problem in North Wales, when every winter is frosty each morning - unlike the Leaf, Zoe or GTE! The only other problem, of course, is the public charging network for non home chargers, but that's getting better now, especially with the tie up between Ecotricity and Gridserve! For James and Kate, the Ioniq might only be £24k but the Ioniq 5 should only be around 35k+, so might make a good choice, even if only on PCP or HP!

I have the a 2018 28 kWh Ioniq Premium in Phantom Black with the rear and front plastic parts in full black. I think it's called the black pack. This way it just looks like a car without a grill. I think that looks much better than the separate grill-like plate this has. The charging speed and efficiency makes this 28kWh a pretty good car even with a fairly small battery. The CCS charging speed is between 60 - 70 kW for a large portion of the charging curve. I would like the larger battery of the new Ioniq, but wouldn't want to miss the much faster charging of the first gen Ioniq. If the new one had that, it would be much more attractive for long journeys. With yourself coming form a Tesla, I guess that would be a real drawback for you too in comparison to Supercharging the Tesla on longer trips.

I think the 28kWh is probably a better buy. Cheaper used ones out there, faster rapid charging, and even 4 year old cars like ours, are reporting 100% battery SoH. Ours has done just over 60,000km.

Degradation is inevitable, that display isn't a state of health display unfortunately. We have a 4 year old 28 and it's almost as good as new.
@paulaschofield3 жыл бұрын
@@simoncanfer5030 absolutely degradation is unavoidable, but my experience from owning a Leaf is that the first 10% goes faster, and then after that it slows down. So I think having that decent buffer on the 28 has been good for masking any degradation up until now. I think we've probably got another 3-4 years before it starts eating into our range, and hopefully by then it will be a nibble each year, rather than a chomp
@simoncanfer50303 жыл бұрын
@@paulaschofield There does seem to be a decent buffer, I've read it's maybe 31kWh gross. Hyundai use available capacity, not gross -unlike the Leaf. We're avoiding 100% charge generally btw.

The efficiency that Hyundai and Kia can get out of their EVs is borderline witchcraft. If I could have afforded the e-Niro it would have been my ideal car and the Ioniq was very nearly what I went for, but I got a really good deal on an MG5 in the end. Having a mileage estimator that is actually accurate would have been nice, though. Only Hyundai and Kia seem to be able to do that.

The car can charge up to 48kw. When low and warm we usually see about 42kw on our 50kw local charger. We are using our 38kw in summer to do Manchester to Cornwall and only need to stop for one charge. So I'd say that's pretty good for a road trip wouldn't you 😉 Owners of the 28kw previous version would have to make at least 2 stops id say.

I drove a ioniq 28 for 3 years and 90,000 km. Absolutely loved the car and wanted to replace it with the 38. However its appalling limitations with regards to rapid charges, especially multiples in a single day, made this car unusable for my personal use case. Ended up buying an esoul instead. The ioniq is a brilliant car, it's efficiency puts all bar some teslas to absolute shame. However if you are planning regulat long trips and will need to rapid charge you need to be aware of this limitation.

I want a model Y but it's 25k more than my 38kwh ioniq and much as I want to I can't find 25ks worth of benefit. I've had 200 miles from a charge in summer and it easily does 4.5-5 m/kWh. The spec is great and Hyundai have been great to deal with. If they upgrade it again it's gonna be even better.

I agree about the split rear screen, but it does seem to be popular in several Japanese and Korean cars. However I do love the seats in my 2017 Ioniq, I find it to be one of the most comfortable cars, along with a Volvo I owned in the UK. Regards to the looks, when you are in the car you are not looking at the car and when your parked up you don't stand around looking at it, but overall it's styled for efficiency. Saying that there are plenty of other cars that I think are less attractive than the Ioniq, maybe you have been spoiled by the Teslas.

The Ioniq is that gem that doesn't sparkle bright so is overlooked. If you're looking for a used ev in this segment you are drawn to the Leaf and to a lesser extent the Zoe or the Golf, completely overlooking the Ioniq. This is odd because it seems to be the most efficient and comes with unrivalled warranties. OK, so it's no poster child but look around you and pick out the glam cars. A car is primarily a tool for a function. For me efficiency and capability always beat looks and I'd always prefer the car which doesn't appeal to the thieves.

Definitely a good car other than the fast charging(50kW+) rate which is unfortunate compared to the original 28kWh.

I believe passenger side airbags are only an issue for rear facing car seats? With a four point belt like in this video, the air bag would probably be more helpful than dangerous?

One of my video suggestions is your review from a year ago. I wonder how much your opinion has changed. :)

Gonna see what Lease deals I can get on an Ioniq 5 when my Zoe Lease is up. This OG (2.0) Ioniq would be a second hand car option if my finances aren't as rosy as expected by then.

661 miles / 4.8 miles per Kwh = 137.7 Kwh used. £7.00 p 137.7 = 5p per Kwh. Is this an Octopus overnight tariff?

Certainly is. Octopus ‘GO’.

The only thing that stops us from having one is the 'saloon car' height as we need an easy-access car; we're regulars at the LRI... poor old gits.

Replying to myself, we actually tried one and the seat height was fine; it’s top of our list now!

great review ,you can rely on your daughter to tell it as it is ,Their is a fine line between practicality and desirability, I am not a car person but when I drive my leaf it still puts a smile on my face and its looks are subjective.

I've just bought a 28kWh Ioniq. My first EV. I have to agree with you about the split rear window, though I'm noticing it less as time goes on. Also I'm still looking for the best seat position & as you say they are very firm. Another point to note is that the car is pretty low (for good reasons) & I banged my head getting in a couple of times when I first got it. The efficiency is amazing though & I'm really enjoying driving it. Florence is brilliant!

I would appreciate it if you would convert the units to metric as well in editing. I can do miles to km, but I can't do miles per kwh to kwh/100km to save my life

I’ll make sure it done in the next video for you 👍🏻

Hyundai should have brought out more exciting colours, that would have disguised the bland look. I wonder if there are aftermarket products that'll assist in making this look more attractive.

Good narration though I'm not sure why the adult kept interrupting :)..but seriously a great real-world video. Thanks!

I've had a Premium SE for a year. My only criticism is the range is a little lower than I would like and the max recharge speed isn't great. Model 3 replacement it is not. However Leaseloco have some really good deals at them at the moment. Surprisingly good car though and only 1p/mile to run.
