@@dauntless764 Thrawn did succeed. He won at the end of Ahsoka Season 1 using limited resources after 10 years in exile. For those who haven't read the books: Thrawn is extremely resourceful. He's been in exile before this at one point. And when he was on a planet with almost no resources, he still went full alien Rambo and took out an insane number of Imperial Troopers with little no tech. So Thrawn being back now with the Imperial Fleet at his disposal? The New Republic needs to be very afraid at this point.

This right here is why Palpatine rose to power rather quickly, and why smart guys like Thrawn followed the old man. He was one of the few politicians who was reliable; even though he was a back-stabbing snake, he was effective. He got things done. If you came to Palpatine with whispers of a threat from the edges of space that can grow to be a serious problem, he'd sit there, hear you out, and probably send Anakin/Vader to help you out, or he'd send someone dependable like Yularen, Tarkin, or Thrawn to deal with it. No wonder people are so loyal to him. They lived through times when the galaxy was ruled by ineffective politicians, he was one of the few who actually put his foot down and got things done. There are times when I think the Rebellion could've done better by simply putting Leia on Palpatine's throne instead of getting rid of the Empire altogether. At least they'd be able to skip all the stupid politics and get right into action. Imagine Hera making a petition to Empress Leia and her right-hand Jedi Shogun Luke Skywalker. All she'd need to do is pass off that someone credible like Ahsoka can testify that a threat coming, and she'd get her approval to go look for Ezra and Thrawn.

Mon Mothma was too sentimental for the Old Republic as it was under Chancellor Valorum. As a part of the political elite, she was insulated from many of the Republic's problems, which were obvious to those outside of the political class. So she built the New Republic to be the same as the Old, which was a bad mistake.

@@ElMaestroGordo - If you had cancer, but now it is in remission, you generally don't want the cancer to come back just because it's "what you know". The Old Republic and the Jedi Order were *badly* broken. Palpatine did *not* seize power! It was *given* to him by the Senate enthusiastically. The Jedi proved time and again that they had lost their moral compass and now followed the trends of politics. The problem is that the Empire's actions overshadowed its origins. So even Mon Mothma, who was there, was lulled by the idea of long Senate debates that accomplished nothing because it was comfortable *for her.* But she didn't consider that the galaxy needed an actual *functioning* government and that was what so many systems had joined the CIS looking for, and why others still miss the Empire.

Thrawn overturned the laws that were against non-humans from being promoted. Thrawn had people promoted based on merit, not race. Because, while Thrawn was the exception, his promotion was controversial in the Empire as he was a Chiss. His Empire of the Hand was more efficient than Palpatine's though. You hit upon two things here that I agree with completely. First, what he thought about the leadership of the Rebellion. While he admitted he respected the soldiers and commanders on the Rebellion - the ones who fought in the field - he didn't have that towards Mon Mothma and the others. Yes, she needed advisors. Yes, she needed to take into consideration the various members who made up the Rebellion. But she was unwilling to provide the firm leadership that a galaxy-spanning government needed. Mon Mothma didn't want to take Palpatine's approach to ruling the galaxy. She didn't want to be seen as another Palpatine. Garm Bel Iblis thought she was doing that or was aiming to do that, and that was why he splintered off and built up his forces in preparation for Mon Mothma's declaration of becoming the new Empress. That didn't happen, and he came to understand why she acted the way she did. Unlike Palpatine, she knew that with every decision she made, lives were in the balance. And she was afraid of entrusting those lives to others with the exception of those whom she could trust completely and implicitly. If Thrawn had known this, he might have given Mon Mothma some measure of respect because in a way, the way the two view the people under their respective commands are similar. But she was unwilling or unable to bring the heavy end of the hammer down on those who needed it, and that leads me to the second thing that I agree with you on - Borsk Fey'lya. I'll refer to him as "that Bothan" from here on out. That Bothan even said at one point what was best for him would be what was best for the galaxy. He didn't care if his political opponents refused to play the game his way. It came to a head during the battle for the Katana Fleet, and his views were exposed to the masses. But what did Mon Mothma do? Expel him? Imprison him? No. She let him endure his species period of penance, which frankly was complete idiocy. He refused to change. He continued to play things according to his rules - the rules that most Bothans play by. The only noted exceptions were Rogue Squadron pilot Asyr Sei'lar and Admiral Traest Kre'fey. And when that Bothan became the leader of the New Republic, he allowed corruption to become rampant in the Senate, which practically doomed the New Republic when they fought against the Yuuzhan Vong. He and the others refused to believe Leia's warnings, thinking it was a play for her to regain control of the New Republic. They refused to act when the military warned them. And by the time they acknowledged the threat, the Yuuzhan Vong had made too much of a headway in their conquest to be countered effectively. I found him to be too "Palpatinistic" for my tastes. By that, I mean his methods and motivations mirrored Palpatine's too closely for my comfort. His only saving grace was he wasn't Force-sensitive. If he had, I would have shot him dead before he even gained entry into the Senate chambers. No way would I allow another Palpatine rise to power, regardless of species. His stunt at the Katana fleet showed what he was, but frankly, the fact he pointed his blaster at a pregnant Leia should have sealed his fate. Chewie should have taught that Bothan how Wookies defined the term "disarmed" before Han shot him in the head and the heart. Granted, there might have been some backlash, and Han would have had a very personal motive for doing this, but in the end, it would have spared the New Republic and the galaxy a whole lot of pain and suffering later on.

Filoni's take on Thrawn is very much watered down. I have very little faith in him not simply being overthrown and killed by girl power, and none of what happens in any of these shows truly matters. It's all subtext and pretense for the awful sequel trilogy and whatever contrived nonsense they do with Rey instead of just letting that narrative dead-end be forgotten as it should.
@lisboah

The problem is not with Filoni, but with the modern culture that forces writers to make female main characters nigh unbeatable and far wiser than the rest. If they don't do that, the feminists will go on a rampage. If Disney!Thrawn was as much of a threat as Legends!Thrawn was, the New Republic would have fallen in a matter of weeks. Keep it in mind that, in Legends, Thrawn was only defeated because his bodyguard killed him because Leia was Vader's daughter, who was a near godlike being in his society.

A failure of logic regarding the characterization of Thrawn is that he's depicted as non-evil and far thinking, yet he supports a totalitarian society which makes no sense within the context of his aforementioned qualities. The trouble with any top heavy society is that while it is highly efficient and effective when run by a strong leader, it becomes a disaster when not run by an uncharacteristically wise hand. If Augustus was immortal perhaps the Roman empire would continue to exist today. Likewise, were Thrawn immortal then rule under his guidance probably would be better than a Republic. Unfortunately he's not and it won't. Sooner rather than later an incompetent ruler will ascend and it will be highly destabilizing. An empire can only weather so much instability before its foundation begins to crumble and it doesn't take much for an external force to easily knock down a once mighty power. Thrawn must know that the inefficiency of a republic is a feature, not a bug. Has the man simply not read his Cicero? Thrawn is too brilliant to suffer from such an obvious blind spot.

There is difference between totalitarian regime, and authoritarian rule, m'thraw'nuruodo is authoritarian, but not totalitarian. Totalitarian regime is authoritarism taken to extremum, where everything and everyone is serving for the ruling class, and the most massive emphasis is on controling people, meanwhile nation and effectiveness are secondary, authoritarian rule have those priorities switched opposite, with nation and effectiveness above controll, it is still to be said that there is very blur line between the two, and they are often intertwining and dancing between those two sides, and can switch with just one ruler valuing personal power above the state into totalitarian state, from wich it is not likely to turn back and will most likely continue until all come crumbling down. After all democracies are not without reason the most common type of government on the planet, they are much less likely to deevolve into totalitarian state, althought it is not impossible, like we see on example of III Reich.

2:14 That pretty much is a fact based in History, just take a look at the French Revolution, or Revolutions I should say. The people rose up against an incompetent autocracy in a brutal uprising. But once it was defeated, once the dust settled and the King lost his head than those same people unified under 1 banner split into infighting factions as they simply, NEVER HAD A PLAN ON WHAT TO DO NEXT? That lead to infighting of democrats vs royalists vs total madmen who took over and you had the Jackobins who instated an arguably far worse "democratic" autocracy on lvl of ww2 Germany. The story of F Revolution also teaches us how to run an autocratic state. Every tyrant from Roman Emperors, to Chinese Emperors to medieval Kings to Louis 14 and 15 knew that a brutal autocracy must be a combination of a Firm hand and provision. To squeeze people for resources, but not too hard so as not to make them desperate, and still provide for them so as to make it reasonable. That the one on top is a brutal evil selfish tyrant, but one that does in the end make your life better, it's a mentality most of us kinda forgot in today's modern times, hw to live under a tyrant, but one that doesn't make your life a living hell. This in turn was Palpatine's mistake, Empire is indeed "A magnificent Construct", but if your construct focuses too much on squeezing without any lee-way or regular provision than obviously its construct flawed with a disease of rebellion.

When Thrawn found out agent Kallus was a spy in canon, he should have told him to tell the rebellion he was planning on a coup from the inside as it was the best way forward for everyone. It would allow the rebels to go into to hiding and the only deaths be Thrawn's imperials and Palpatine's imperials and actual rebel terrorists like saw who would likely refuse to go along with this plan. Once Thrawn takes over the empire he would stop all of the corruption and restore the empire into a republic. Kallus didn't believe him thinking it was a trap until thrawn explained the chiss and how his successes against these lothal rebels would help him get enough power to be promoted and get enough support from other imperials to take over, as a "neccesary evil". Thrawn then calls out kallus for killing an entire race of people. Thrawn says he will be his contact to the rebels but they must frame someone else, Constantine. His plan is to create "false successes" against the rebels to help them go into hiding and thrawn can get promoted. He would then make sure corrupt imperials are part of the "Minimal losses" that would still occur. As an act of good faith thrawn promises once the rebels are "gone" from lothal he would convince the empire to move resources elsewhere. His first plan is to destroy a "Rebel base" that will actually already be abondoned but record an orbital bombardment. Kallus is to tell the rebels to centralize all of their broken transports and ships in one place for him to destroy and record for the empire, however they would need to remotely pilot some ships to make it look good that some were trying to escape, especially a replica of the ghost. Thrawn also uses this to show off his tie-defenders taking out the ghost which fully makes plapatine switch to supporting his project. Which is good since Thrawn is making sure the pilots are loyal to him. As expected saw disagrees with the plan and plans on ambushing thrawn, which actually helps make the recording more believable. Saw is captured and thrawn convinces him that if he agrees to he plan he will let saw help kill vader and palpatine, he agrees and thrawn holo-records burning a dead body pretending it is saw. Saw then leaves to go into hiding with the rest of the rebels. Thrawn gets promoted to admiral of the fleet. Thrawn now comes up with a plan to fill a star destroyer with explosives and crash it into vader's command ship when palpatine and a bunch of high raking military officers are visiting. Thrawn however is not going to be at the meeting as he was put in charge of security for the event, after fufilling his promise thrawn lets saw press remote button that starts the ship ramming towards vader's ship. Thrawn to pretend he is trying to stop it orders all ships to fire on it, however it is too late. Now with palaptine, and all other high ranking officials dead, thrawn takes a tip out of plapatine's book and declares himself emperor. He does a whole thing thanking the Emperor for his ability to end the clone wars and stop the rebels, he then blames the attack on the grysk. An alien race that wants to destroy the galaxy and his people, he then claims they are shapeshifters and blamed the initial assisination attempt on plaplpatine on the jedi, as they feared the jedi to be their greatest threat. He then says with this galaxy secure he can take the fleet and travel outside the galaxy to defeat this threat and protect the borders of the empire. Thrawn also claims that he is reforming the empire back into the republic, stating that palpatine gained power taking the burden of ruling off of the citizens in order to protect them and to destory corruption in the senate, but centralizing that power made him too much of a target. With the galaxy secure now and with palpatine's sacrifice destroying corruption the galaxy is ready for the responsibility of ruling themselves again. He also then creates an "intergalactic alliance" with neutral planets like mandalore (Which didn't defy the emperor because of this plan and was not destroyed) Navarro, ryloth, and the chiss. After this speech Thrawn only serves 4 years as emperor to oversee the transfer of power back to the senate and oversees a the creation of a new military with thrawn's tactics becoming doctrine. Thrawn helps craft a new constitution that allows citizens to be armed in case of invasion, and allows for planets to form their own militaries to supplement the federal military (like the chiss families). He combines the best parts of the chiss with the empire and rebellion creating a "System Patrol" to take over policing and act as a defensive navy, and a defense force consisting of a navy, starfighter corps, special forces, and an small army focusing on training planetary defense forces. Thrawn develops an entire new line of ships based around a carrier and cruiser combo, as well as support ships like missile/torpedo boats, frigates, and interdictors, combining imperial tech with mon calamari shields. Now able to be in the open Obiwan is able to tell luke and leia the truth before luke goes off to join the defense fleet, with their first mission to go get yoda, ezra, sabine, and ahsoka and start rebuilding the order. However the new order has both full time and part time jedi and opens up force church's throughout the galaxy teaching how to become one with the force even after death. Leia and Sabine have very little force sensitivity but they learn how to trust the force. Luke becomes a pilot for the navy and ahsoka steps up to be full time master of the order (like a pastor). Ezra and sabine spread the force to the Mandalorians. Thrawn then focuses the majority of the navy on exploring the unkown regions closest to the chiss to take out the grysk. He has help from the jedi who help him navigate, most notably ezra who is able to connect with purgil, and luke skywalker who becomes his best starfighter pilot, alongside hera syndulla and wedge antilles, and admiral akbar and han solo who lead the 2 other carrier groups supporting thrawn's flagship. The tie defender, x wing, and a-wing designs are brought to the chiss UAG and with input from Luke, han, and wedge the chiss create 2 designs of ships: First the clawcraft, an easy to use superiority starfighter. It had 3 variants a multirole assault varaint, an superiority variant, and a remote piloted interceptor variant. Second is the StealthX a jedi starfighter that required using the force to communicate due to it's stealth abilities. It also had reduced avionics, sensors, and shields, focusing on stealth technology, speed, maneuverability, and firepower. They then begin their preparations for the grysk invasion which eventually comes but the combined intergalactic alliance fleet fends it off and destroys them. With the grysk gone, thrawn returns home and creates his own ruling family marrying thalias with the taken over grysk planets becoming their new home and Thrawn's new name becoming. Patriarch Jedi'raw'nuruodo making his new name Dirawn. Thrawn allows the jedi to build a new temple on the planet and vows to have no part in familiy politics which is why he created a new family name.

The fact that the actress playing Morgan Elsbeth has the same name as my grandmother, and whose father was trained by Bruce Lee, who then trained her... is enough for me to be full in. Ahsoka's going to have to dispatch some of these folks with lightsabers, because her big baddie is going to be hard enough without one.

He's not wrong about leading a rebellion and leading a government. I think having the leaders of a rebellion lead a government is the worst form of government. You need new leaders for a new form of leadership. It's why a Constitutional monarchy works so well in comparison to an Absolute monarchy, and why the Rebellion began. Sidious empire was an absolute empire, and the Rebellion sort to end it. The Rebellion was a slow Revolution because it was an absolute agreement, not rule. This is why you need new leaders. The other issue the New Republic faces is that there are too few leaders. Thrawn can see this and I think if the New Republic had to fight Thrawn's Hand Empire it would help them see their weaknesses. They need something or someone to unite them and Thrawn could just be that someone!

I'd argue he's in his own category. Anti-heros usually don't care about saving others, but Thrawn does given the Yuuzhan Vong/Grysk Threat to the entire galaxy. So he's able to set aside his morality to get the job done, but for him it's all about saving lives in the long run.

I love Thrawn for who he is. He maybe on the wrong side of the war, but he is smart, kind, respectful, cares for the people of the galaxy, has taste for art and other people's ideas and he would make a better leader and a better government. If I was him, I would make it just like The United Federations of Planets in Star Trek! The Galactic Empire and the Old Republic was trash. The New Republic in legends was bad too, but due to events like the diverse Alliance (which changed the new republic on how to treat non humans, which is better than the old republic) it got better over time. Just like the USA back then during the Native American wars, The Civil War and Civil Rights problems like Suffering till Suffrage and White Man VS Black Man thing, OUR Republic was not perfect, but got better over time. If Thrawn was on the side of the rebels and then the new republic he would definitely help them improve faster like he did with The Empire Of The Hand. It would have been great!

I think this flawedness in a Disney-era Star Wars media is actually intentional for once. Ashoka is trying to show how the New Republic has become complacent since winning the Battle of Jakku. All the demilitarization and arrogant commanding officers are meant to show us, the fans, that the New Republic thinks that there is no evil left that can successfully oppose them. We know these flaws are intentionally done by the writers because we all already know what's gonna happen. The Republic's laziness will lead to the rise of the First Order and the NR does little about it, so the Resistance cones in and says "Aight, I've had it up to here with this banthapoodoo, you ain't gonna save the galaxy, Imma dewit myself." And thanks to demilitarization, the "Republic Fleet" can't properly defend the capital, so battered bald scrotum-face Snokey Boi uses Kyber Crystal central, the planet Illum, which he turned into Death Star on steroids, and blows up every planet in the Hosnian System. Way to go New Republic. I do hope that at or near the end of Ashoka, we do see the rise of the First Order.

Palpatine wasn't really that bad considering what other Sith Lords did. Yes he did destroy the Jedi, but on the other Hand the Jedi weren't a Force Of Good to the Galaxy. As for the Republic, well you don't need to look Further then Coruscant, Shiny on the Surface but Disgusting under. In a way the Jedi and the Republic were good at Burying their Heads in the Ground and Pretending Everything is well and good. Even back during Kotor, all the Sith had to do is Ignore the Jedi and the Republic and they would have Crumbled Under their own Incompetence, in a way their Actions allowed them to Thrive Way Longer then it was Necessary.

It's interesting how Thrawn's philosophy focuses on the flaws of republican government without giving equal consideration to the flaws of authoritarian rule. Dictators need to remain open to new information and ideas, but concentrating that much power in one person makes an awfully juicy target for all the skillful manipulators in the galaxy. Even on a national level, it's incredibly easy to become paranoid or overconfident and thus become disconnected from the populace you intended to protect. The history of authoritarian rule is littered with revolts and revolutions. And even when a ruler is skilled at that tightrope walk, their inevitable death can lead to collapse or decline. Succession disputes have fractured nations. Even if succession is clear and undisputed, history is full of selfish tyrants and ineffective kings.

I think the beauty of Zahn's writing is that he has his characters act within their cultural contexts. The Chiss Ascendancy was an oligarchy of families in a caste system with authoritarian threads. So it makes sense that the Chiss as a whole would see the authoritarian Empire as a lesser evil to destruction. It also explains how they would see the old and new Republics as corrupt and mismanaged. Thrawn's viewpoint is that efficiency trumps infighting, even if said system is authoritarian.

@@chrisstarlitvagabond1496 Exactly. While Thrawn had arguments over tactics with the Chiss leaders, it makes sense for him to still favour a more authoritarian system because that's what he knows. Decades of military service - as any military branch, in this case Naval - would add to this as militaries are authoritarian by design/necessity. Thrawn is willing to overlook or allow certain things simply because completing the mission/survival is paramount. The Chiss are constantly at war with the Grysk/Yuuzhan Vong, so it does make sense that they would excuse certain crimes to get the job done. As for your last comment about leaders dying: in the old EU, Thrawn had arranged it so that even if he died, his Empire of the Hand could still be run by his subordinates. I think it might have been naturally absorbed by the Ascendancy over time. But it was never taken by the New Republic. Shows how far ahead Thrawn was at planning.

@Feanor6450
@Feanor6450 Жыл бұрын
also bear in mind, Thrawn abhors civilian casualties, trying to avoid them whenever possible, so the story of the death stars and then operation cinder will not sit well with him, it is hard to imagine him feeling much love or kinship with the imperial remnants given what the empire has done since he was pulled into hyperspace, overall I think he should instead take the view that with the emperor dead his oath of loyalty has died with him and he should go back to the Chiss ascendancy, possibly setting up the empire of the hand or equivalent, before leading the Hand's forces against the yuuzhan vong at the side of the New Republic. Remember, Thrawn joined the empire for the primary purpose of defending HIS people, not everyone, even if he sees the New Republic as a failure it is hard to imagine him deciding that it is his duty to destroy it, killing millions of people in the process, in order to reinstate a dictatorship with himself at the top.
